The plan as I understand it was for thousands of angry conservatives to march on Washington DC to demand that President Barak Obama resign, be impeached, or whatever. I live in a town just outside the DC border, and anytime something big happens, traffic is dramatically affected all over the tri-state area. But Friday was just another day. Hardly anybody showed up. It wasn’t even important enough for the local news stations to cover it. I only discovered it this morning while browsing Twitter. This is a prime example of how deluded the GOP is. Thanks to the hate media they listen to religiously, GOtP are convinced they are the majority. The only thing that we as citizens and voters can overturn “Citizens United” is to vote solidly democrat and kick the Republican out of politics. Sending letters to Congress won’t make a difference as the Republicans obviously don’t listen to the people who voted them into office in the first place. As far as SCOTUS is concerned, the Republican members of the Supreme Court need to die off — sooner rather than later — so we can replace them with more reasonable judges. Setting term limits for Supreme Court judges might be a good idea.
The “war on terror” in the 2000’s had about as much substance as the “war on drugs” of the 1990’s, and was about as successful. You could well say that the reason Bush couldn’t catch Bin Laden or make any progress in his wars and Obama did capture and kill Bin Laden and is almost done winding down Bush’s wars is:
– Bush was fighting an amorphous beast – terror – which led Bush to start wars with people we had no business fighting (Iraq).
– Obama was focused on the real wars we were fighting, those in Iraq and Afghanistan. The results, Bin Laden captured and killed, the Iraq war, ended, for us at least, the Afghan war, soon to be over.
If we want to be at war with terror we should focus on the real threats within our own borders. We have problems of our own. The rest of the world needs to start policing itself.
– We cannot trust that our military will not send us out to fight in a war that has nothing to do with protecting our country, the best examples being Iraq, Vietnam and Korea.
– We cannot trust that when we return from fighting in a war that our politicians will treat us with respect, will treat our wounds and will help us get back on our feet however long that takes. Currently our politicians are slapping the veterans around for the sake of expediency. It’s revolting.
If our country were to initiate a draft before these problems are resolved, there would be thousands if not millions of draft dodgers and not just the rich kids with connections that always get out of the draft. It would be everyone but the poor, the same poor who join up voluntarily because they need the job.
If it’s about loyalty to the country, how can you be loyal to a country that you know is going to screw you over at the first opportunity?
The lesson we should be taking from this is that nation-building, particularly when it’s being done mostly by us, largely doesn’t work, and is not our responsibility. We left Iraq as well prepared to take care of itself as we could, and left, which is what they and we both wanted. It’s their responsibility now. The duty of the U.S. military is to protect the U.S.A., not its interests overseas, which could be defined as anything one cares to. Our jobs should be focused on our own country, our own security, and our own economy.
As much as I dislike the GOTP, the way they are presents a larger problem. They keep their electorate in the dark with their lies. They run their election campaigns with money almost completely provided by billionaires and corporations that might but almost certainly do not have any allegiance to this country. A major American party run this way opens the door for a political takeover by a foreign power. The way the GOTP operates, this could happen right under their noses with the GOTP completely unaware, or if they heard about it they would probably refuse to acknowledge it since they are much more interested in staying in power than in benefiting the country.

The GOP seem to be perfectly happy doing nothing whatsoever until they hear that President Obama is doing something great without their help. Then they get all bitchy, complaining that they should’ve been consulted.

One positive thing appears to be helping is the current boycott of the sponsors of Rush Limbaush’s hate radio show. These corporations are being publicly shamed on Twitter (I reblog some of these messages on Tumblr). We need to end hate media that masquerades as “another point of view”.
