I used to drive from Seattle to San Antonio each year; always loved Missoula, not so much Butte (had a bad experience there once – plus I saw a billboard advertising “Coldest Beer, Cheapest Too!” right next to the campground I had planned on staying at). The Bitteroots were my fave. I keep trying to get the hub to do another trek up that way, for old times sake, while we CAN still drive. I used to have a truck, and would crawl in the back to sleep. I once saw – while driving across MT at about 3AM – a huge old porcupine, lumbering across the interstate. What I loved was being able to turn off the truck, and just watch it in my headlights, with no other cars coming/going. While in the class Native Americans, we were first given Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee to read; each night, I would read one chapter, then sit in the bathtub, sobbing uncontrollably. My husband at the time – the practice husband – finally convinced me to drop the course after nine nights of tears. (The bathtub was often empty when I began bawling.) With the world as it is today, with so much suffering, we decided to choose the charity FOR them, and THEY get to choose the project. My husband lost his job in September, and even though we are fine, we are living much more cautiously now. Hard to find a way that you can truly, truly believe that $25 can make a REAL difference. Kiva is a great organization, and if you let the loan ride after it is repaid, it can be put towards another project, then another, then another – and so on. So one little amount can help so many. It’s hard to find businesses that can really change someone’s life that can be “built” for $1500 or so. Have you ever checked out Kiva? Just go look at it…..it’s truly inspirational. And Kalima, thanks to you, AdLib, KQuark and KevenSeven – you are the original four for this amazing place, right? Each person here IS a gift to me. I have given ALL my relatives, my Afghan man-child/boy, and several friends gift certificates for Kiva with that very quote on it. I was lucky enough this week to go visit my “adopted” Afghan son at work, whose family just bought a little store/gas station of their own (they have lived here for 3 years -came as refugees). Since buying the store about 2 months ago, they have transformed it from a filthy dirty, scary place to a nice little store. I got to meet – at last – the family’s father. I had expected to be very formal, strictly adhering to THEIR cultural norms. Instead, I was greeted with smiles, handshakes, hugs and LOTS of laughter. What my friend and I left with – and what we just finished discussing a few minutes ago -was how WONDERFUL it was in this day and age to get a dose of real, old fashioned “American” enthusiasm and “American” dream! These people work seven days a week, in 10 hour shifts. No days off, no vacations. But they are living their dream and over the moon excited to share it with me. No griping, no whining, no complaining. Sigh. It’s a Wonderful Life for the Hamidis, and God bless them, everyone. It was truly a life lesson, and one I wanted to share with you. While sitting there, I thought about so many people in my life, who have – through good times and bad – come to teach me those lessons. Anne, my angel of forgiveness, who forgave me when I truly was a bitch to her. Sarah, my angel of inspiration, who helped me find my work with the Afghan children. Jill, my angel of nurturing. Kit, my angel of truth. On and on, so many people. I came home from that sermon, and wrote each of them a note, describing exactly what role they had played in my life, and promising to always hold their lessons dear and near. Javaz, you are an angel yourself to be so grateful to this woman, and being able to think of her during this difficult time. An angel of gratitude. I keep your lesson with me as well. I used to live in Seattle, and worked for law firms (both defense and plaintiff). Several clients were Canadian citizens, who had car accidents while here in the states. I spent hours with these clients. NOT A ONE OF THEM would have traded our system for theirs for all the tea in China. One of them had a mum with cancer, who also received great care. This guy had back problems, and his treatment was less invasive and more effective than he could have had here. I still have a good friend up north, and he is adamant that their system is humane and ours is a piece of crap. I agree with him.
