Displaying 301 To 330 Of 466 Comments Ladies and Gentlemen, Our Corporate Anthem I’m a big fan of William Gibson’s books. My favorite is “The Difference Engine” a steam-punk novel that posited the existence of computers in the mid-1800s, before electricity and before cinematography. » Posted By jjgravitas On December 15, 2013 @ 7:48 pm The Weekend Music Thread-Welcome One and All The OKEH Laughing record came out in the late 1920’s (78rpm of course). It has been re-released many times since and Dr. Dimento has included it on several of his collections. I discovered it in the 1970’s when I was in a band and the rhythm guitarist had a 45rpm copy. » Posted By jjgravitas On December 15, 2013 @ 10:23 am The OKEH Laughing Record » Posted By jjgravitas On December 14, 2013 @ 2:49 pm CSNY: Our House » Posted By jjgravitas On December 14, 2013 @ 2:41 pm AOL To Buy Delta Airlines: Will Require All Passengers to Fly Naked Perhaps they should develop working x-ray specs for the airline staff. Its probably me, but when you are writing about the republicans I am sometimes not sure if (or how much of) what you are writing is parody, as they are so often inclined to make a joke out of themselves. For example: their fight against health care, their determination to shut down the government, denial of climate change in the face of record breaking storms, their laughable attempts not to appear racist and sexist, and their naked support of the rich at the expense of the poor. Every time I think they have reached their lowest level, they manage to sink a little further. » Posted By jjgravitas On December 12, 2013 @ 9:23 am Famous Movie Quotes If Republicans Had Starred in Classic Films NETWORK starring the entire Tea Party, hanging out their windows: “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it anymore!” » Posted By jjgravitas On December 5, 2013 @ 1:40 pm The GOP Problem with the Problem About the Problem with Obamacare It’s not just your opinion , it’s true. And that is my point. Nixon was a very bad guy, and he wasn’t impeached for his very real crimes. And the GOP wants to impeach Obama over disagreements that they have blown completely out of proportion, trivializing the concept of impeachment in the process. Is that what we are going to do from now on? Disagree with a president over procedure so we impeach him? » Posted By jjgravitas On December 4, 2013 @ 3:27 pm Ad, unfortunately we do have to argue on behalf of reality, shine a light on the darkness that the republicans spread around with their lies and nonsense. That is the only way to keep logic and reality on top. The republican style of reasoning is more on the level of voodoo and cult fear. » Posted By jjgravitas On December 4, 2013 @ 8:46 am Ad, I read in the Wash Post that the House GOP yesterday were discussing the possibility of impeaching President Obama. His “impeachable offences” as they put it were something about gun policy and Obama’s “threat to bomb Syria without congressional approval,” and something about the Benghazi incident. I grew up thinking that impeaching a president was supposed to be something serious, the GOP are reducing it to the level of a parking ticket. Even Nixon didn’t get impeached over Watergate. But Nixon, of course, was a republican. » Posted By jjgravitas On December 4, 2013 @ 7:32 am Makes me wonder what the Republican position will be in another few years when they no longer have Obama to kick around anymore. When the next administration takes ownership of the ACA, will the Republicans still be intent on destroying it? » Posted By jjgravitas On December 3, 2013 @ 5:40 pm The U.S. Government is doing an excellent job of destroying itself. The president tries to do one thing, and the rest of the government does everything in its power to prevent it from happening. Then on to the next thing, and the next and the next. Same result every time. » Posted By jjgravitas On November 18, 2013 @ 10:02 pm Our Wonderful Media, Spinning Wins as Losses and Delusions As Facts Lex Luthor would love this. I read a sad bit o’ news today that West Virginia, which used to be solidly democratic, is now turning republican. This is apparently because they are blaming the current administration for the huge problems they now have – coal is out of fashion so scores of miners are out of work along with the many businesses that supported them. I feel for them but blaming the democrats wont change anything, and making all three branches of government republican won’t help WVa either. » Posted By jjgravitas On October 27, 2013 @ 5:44 pm The reason why the GOP still controls the House? One word: gerrymandering! Since they first came back into power in the mid-90’s, the House GOP has been redesigning the districts in their states to secure republican votes. I don’t know if there is a non-GOP website that tracks this but there should be. How can we fix this? The gerrymandered districts make it harder for the democratic vote to make a difference. Since gerrymandering design is all about demographics, changing the demographics is the best or fastest way to change how districts vote for their representatives. One thing that would do that is a large influx of poor immigrants from south of the border settling in the South and the Midwest, so it’s no mystery why the GOP has such a hatred for immigrants. » Posted By jjgravitas On October 27, 2013 @ 12:08 pm The Chicken Little Syndrome – Why Some On the Left Root For Their Own Failure What Americans lack these days is something positive and inspirational to fight for. In the 60’s and 70’s we had civil rights and women’s rights. Today we have nothing like that. And the war we are winding down from now is not the quagmire that Viet Nam was, so no antiwar movement is possible or even necessary. I think my point is that, compared to the 60’s and 70’s, the problems we have to deal with today, though just as important, are not as easy to rally round. » Posted By jjgravitas On October 23, 2013 @ 9:39 am Tea Party Republicans Fit The Mayo Clinic’s Description of Sociopaths Fair point, Killgore – Hitler was appointed Chancellor then became dictator through fear, intimidation, and worse. We like to think that can’t happen today, but then I hear the lies and hatred coming the Tea Party and their ilk, I have to wonder. That country was 1930’s Germany and the leader they elected was Adolf Hitler. Compare the early Nazis to the current Tea Party. » Posted By jjgravitas On October 21, 2013 @ 10:25 am Adlib you nailed it. Repubs, Tea partiers are antisocial, sociopathic. It is ironic that they are even in politics in the first place, as political office is supposed to be about public service (paid public service but still), and yet their policies seem to be mostly about denying service to the public rather than improving peoples’ lives. I don’t want us involved in Syria’s civil war. If Obama wants to get involved, he should make his case to the United Nations. It’s time we stopped fighting other people’s wars for them. Are we really such a useless society that the only way we can help the world is to blow it up? Or is it really the rest of the world that is so stupid and useless that the only way we can get our point across is if we bash them over the head with it? It’s really disappointing — it’s why people become isolationists. I consider my self an Obama supporter but I don’t support him in this. Oh, and by the way, congrats to the Obama administration for making sure we stayed out of the Syrian civil war. And keeping us out of Libya. And Nigeria. And for getting us out of Iraq, and soon Afghanistan. And eliminating Ben Laddin. And for the deep reductions to our deficit.
