It’s a good thing to keep the lines of communication open, but how do you have a dialogue with people (like the uber-wealthy and the extreme RW fundies) who are determined not to have a dialogue? As the Bonnie Raitt song says: “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” I think it’s also important to take a look at activism and how it’s done. Not just whether we’re involved, but how we’re involved. There’s effective activism. MLK was a genius when it came to that. And then there are what — imho — are less effective tactics. Disrupting events and seizing the microphone at Bernie Sanders speeches while giving someone like Donald Trump a complete pass — frankly — baffles me. Even going after Hillary Clinton seems pointless. The movements of the 50s and 60s — peace, women’s and civil rights all — were effective because they were brave. They took the fight to the so-called “enemy.” Which was often really dangerous. Attacking one’s potential allies is neither courageous nor wise as far as I can tell. And claiming that one is going to “protest” by refusing to vote is just as futile. Unity requires people of good will to vote, to participate in democracy and to refrain from going after each other. Because — frankly — it was starting to terrify me. Not having cable, I wasn’t able to watch the hearing on the Iran deal, but I read an article that included long excerpts from the transcripts of them. As always, the GOP “questions” were much more about obscuring the truth and insulting Moniz and Kerry than seeking real information. The GOPers were either genuinely ignorant on just about everything connected with this deal, or — like Cruz (who did graduate from Dartmouth after all) — they were pretending to be. The President, Kerry, Moniz, Rice and others in the administration must feel like an intelligent, capable school principal and staff who are trying to negotiate the next year’s budget and labor contract, but who have to get approval from the inmates of the 8th grade Detention Room (after they’ve all been deprived of their Adderall and fed Cherry Kool-Ade and Pixie Stix instead). I saw short bits of video (and still photos) of Kerry’s face during those hearings and he looked so utterly weary — bone-weary right down to his fractured femur — and seemed to be struggling so valiantly not to roll his eyes and/or just get up and walk out of the room. It was hard just to see it. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to live it! And every day, all this ignorance (either faux or genuine) is feeding the ignorance and paranoia of a sub-set of the American people. Just today, a truck full of yahoos fired at American soldiers who were participating in the Jade Helm operation in Mississippi. Apparently what begins as a game of perverse Mad Libs in DC, ends up being a game of War in the nether regions of the country. Who would have thought that the most dangerous aspect of the military’s war game simulations would be the paranoia of their own fellow ‘Murkans? Cranked up by the likes of these guys. One thing about Bernie’s position on civil rights that deserves mention I think, is the fact that a.) he was marching for civil rights when it was not a particularly popular — or even safe — thing to do, and b.) he connects the dots in the argument that what is morally sound in the economic arena is very likely to be beneficial to African American citizens. Is free college tuition going to be helpful to many African American families? You bet. Is raising the minimum wage going to make a difference in some African American households? I think so. Is paid sick leave going to be beneficial to African American workers? I would imagine. The list goes on and on. Also — maybe I missed it, but has Hillary put forth her position on the TPP Asian trade treaty? If she has, I must have missed it. Her silence on this and other issues is very worrying to me. Candidates who wait to see which way the wind blows before announcing positions don’t inspire confidence in me. Of course, if she is the candidate, I’ll vote for her. Whatever her faults, she’s light years beyond anyone in the GOP field. I’m also a little concerned about the tone of some of her “people.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t “PUMA” (in 2008) stand for: “Party Unity My Ass”? These were the hardcore Hillary supporters who were really willing to go to the mat for her — no holds barred. I think people are getting sick of take-no-prisoners politics. Bernie has been extremely gracious in the way he’s spoken about Hillary so far. And — although this is only anecdotal evidence — I haven’t heard any of his supporters getting really nasty about her. But I have heard — first hand — Hillary supporters who have sworn that they’ll stay home on election day rather than vote for Bernie Sanders. Are they really that enamored of the thought of President Scott Walker? And do we really need to form the circular firing squad this early in the game? I think Dems need to take a deep breath, ratchet down the anger level and keep the long game in mind. Sometimes dark humor is the only way to deal effectively with dark attitudes and actions. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are right there with you! I watched a part of the FOX interview with Ma and Pa Duggar and it was genuinely surreal. Jim Bob actually said that Josh allegedly came to him and Michelle THREE TIMES and admitted — tearfully — to this behavior. What kind of parents don’t protect their daughters and allow this to happen over and over before even beginning to take action?? What difference do Josh’s tears make when it’s obvious that he has no intention of changing his behavior? A little dark humor flickered through my own mind when I heard that — as in — the fact that the Little Duggar had fine-tuned his act down to a regular routine: molest, confess, boo-hoo-hoo, molest, confess, boo-hoo-hoo, etc., etc. ad infinitum and ad nauseam. And — speaking of nausea — don’t you have to have the emesis basin handy when you watch those episodes that led up to Josh’s wedding? The ones where he carefully refrained from even holding hands with his bride-to-be until they were officially engaged? And then the first kiss was reserved for their wedding day. GAG!! How could his parents and siblings sit there with those simpering expressions on their faces when they knew full well what had gone on in that household? The damage done to these kids is going to take many years to repair. Some of them are so repressed that they’re STILL denying that they were victimized by him. Instead, they do as they’ve been taught. They blame the evil “outside world” for noticing their hypocrisy and lifting up the rug where everything had been swept under. (I absolutely refuse to believe that these girls “slept through” everything he did to them as they’re claiming either. Not unless he put 15 Ambien tablets in their Ovaltine at bedtime. Which — somehow — wouldn’t surprise me.) Virtually every family has its share of problems and oddball members, so I don’t want to come across as feeling vastly superior to the Duggars and their fellow fundies. But the difference is in how these things are handled. (Which was not well in the Duggars’ case.) And the great majority of us mere mortals wouldn’t have the almighty brass to put ourselves out there on national television as role-models every week after something like this. The cynical side of me sees all this scrambling that they’re doing now — all this granting of access and interview time to FOX — as a last-ditch desperate attempt to save their financial empire. They’ve gotten so used to NOT having to work for a living that I think they’re petrified at the prospect of having to do what they tell everyone else to do — go out and get a real job. But — hey — I hear Chik-Fil-A is hiring!! They’re just as intolerant of LGBT people as the Duggar clan. Meanwhile — can you imagine what would have been the reaction if it had ever come to light that Barack Obama had done something like this in his teen years? I have to say that I’m an opponent of the death penalty in general. The US is one of the few developed countries that still has it, and I don’t think that it makes a good statement about us as a civilization. Europe, Russia, Canada, Australia, Mexico and most of South America do not have it. Africa has varying uses of it — depending on the country. With DNA analysis available now, we’re discovering that we’ve incarcerated a number of innocent people (although Tsarnaev is not one of them), so it’s clear that mistakes can and have been made. Once people have been executed, there’s no way to rectify the situation if there’s been an error. And then there’s the issue that you raised — about the endless process of appeals. These consume time and money and cause endless stress and misery for families of victims, and for the perpetrator as well. Of course, there’s the ethical argument too. How do we send the message that killing is wrong? By killing the killer? I completely understand that Tsarnaev is anything but a sympathetic figure. But don’t we want to feel that we’re on a higher moral level than he is? There are situations in which people have come to their senses — have matured and changed for the better in prison situations. Do we want to cut anyone off from the opportunity to live, learn and reform (to use an out-dated term) by terminating his/her life before that can happen? I know that these are all the traditionally “bleeding heart” arguments, but — what can I say? I’m a bleeding heart liberal — to the bone. Bottom line though, Homie — I’m with you. No execution in this case. No martyrdom. No “eye for an eye” justice. He was hit with some smaller pieces of shrapnel and was taken to the emergency room where he was treated and released. He was extremely fortunate. (Oddly, he also had a niece at the school at Sandy Hook where Adam Lanza committed that atrocity. She wasn’t injured, thank goodness.) It’s almost impossible to believe that this doesn’t take a real emotional toll on anyone who’s lived through it. They’d so much love to think of themselves as nice guys. Others here have done such a terrific job of citing reasons for stress and poverty in our minority communities. I wonder if I might add one more. The rapid rise of the for-profit prison industry. There’s a huge incentive to arrest poor and minority citizens to keep the “feeder lines” flowing and profits high.
