As a lifelong MA resident, I was mightily impacted by the recent battle over control of the revered Market Basket grocery chain. First thing this morning I went into my local Market Basket. The shelves are empty, they were stocking dry foods. The produce section is bare. There were three steaks in the case.
Self-proclaimed critics attempted to tie Michael Brown to the Gangsta Life of the rap songs and violence, concluding that a kid with no criminal record was no better than a thug. Perhaps these critics have forgotten about the past, when young children idolized the pirates of the 1700s, the cowboys of the 1800s Old West, and the gangsters, bank robbers and killers of the early 1900s for their criminal exploits.
In our constant efforts to improve and update the PlanetPOV site, we are trying out a new chat system which we debuted on last week’s Vox Populi. We are opening it for full time use to the membership this week for all to give it a test drive and help us identify the issues that come up.
Some studies have been done to determine the effectiveness of body cameras worn by police officers. Effects on police/community relations and the numbers of complaints by citizens, of excessive force used by police officers were two key factors in these studies.
After the past few weeks of doom and gloom and the usual talking heads nonsense, my brain feels a little scrambled. I figured we should just mix it up good this weekend.

Can we as citizens of this nation have an influence on policies that could help to alleviate some of the pain/strife that we see in this nation? Should we be trying to make this country/this world a better place or should we just be spectators?
“These ISIS guys, they won’t be armed, right? I mean, we’re seasoned Ferguson cops, we’re used to dealing harshly with groups of unarmed enemies, we’re great at that.”
How to stop ISIS, a group too hardline even for al-Qaida, in control of $3 Billion, 30,000 men and a lot of captured U.S. arms, with minds and hearts focused on the creation of a Sunni Fundamentalist Caliphate, is emerging as a most important topic among world leaders.
Apparently, revolution and guns are only good things when in the hands of white people. Can you imagine what would be happening in Ferguson, MO right now if those protesting over the murder of Michael Brown openly carried rifles and hand guns in their protests?
Ferguson, Missouri, is a majority-black city governed and policed mostly by whites. The mayor is white. The police chief is white. The police force is 94 percent white. Only one of its six city council members is black. Ferguson, with a 67 percent black population, seem to defy electoral logic.
If we had jobs that paid well and a minimum wage that was livable we would not have nearly as many problems. People would be busy doing their jobs and living their lives.
In case you’re wondering, folks, mishigas is an alternate spelling of the Yiddish word “mishuga,” meaning crazy, silly, a bit daft, round the bend….etc. I thought, after such a week filled with depressing news, a little “mishigas,” might just be in store now. Pick your favorite tunes, by your favorite […]
