Ah Kalima – the love you have for your Dad shines with every word you write about him and I won’t even say ‘treasure your moments’ because I know you do. My Dad has been gone for 5 years now and I miss him (and my Mum) very much. Dad was, in the manner of English Dads of his era, a very remote man – discipline and hugs was the woman’s job and the man only ever stepped in when the children were being particularly fractious. Consequently, I grew up kind of knowing my Dad loved me but never being quite sure. That changed when I flew back home for Mum & Dad’s 50th anniversary. It was a surprise visit and Mum was so happy to see us but my Dad just totally gob-smacked me. He started crying and hugged me until I couldn’t breath and held my hand all evening – it was and is the best gift he ever gave me. So Happy Father’s Day Dad – and to all the other Dad’s out there and in here ….. don’t ever let your children grow up not knowing for sure that you absolutely and unreservedly love them to pieces! At first glance it may seem that the left doesn’t like free speech – we jump all over the obnoxious and hateful speakers and, recently, even call for them to be hung, drawn and quartered especially when that speech comes from the left. The right only ever seems to do it when such speech comes from the left – they ignore or excuse such speech from their own side and never, ever condemn it. I like to think it’s because we’re better people than those on the right – that we think there is absolutely no free pass for anyone and that, while we defend free speech, we also recognise that there are consequences for hateful speech. As a related aside – I listened to an interview on CBC with Lanny Davis, Clinton’s legal counsel back in the day, who claims to be a great friend of Helen Thomas. I don’t know who this man is or whether he is, indeed, a great friend. He said that he has researched HT’s views and firmly believes that she has always been anti-semitic, not merely critical of Israel. Her views go back a long way and she, according to him, is of the opinion that jews do not belong in Israel, they are an alien people. He further stated that she subscribes to the old anti-semite view that jews are doomed to wander the world without a home. He was coy about where he looked for his research so I have no idea how he came to his conclusion. My neighbours son in law worked on that bridge – on the PEI side there is a memorial, for want of a better word, and there is a brick for every person who worked on that bridge with that person’s name on it – kinda kewl! If there was a controversy it has been long forgotten – the bridge has been a boon to the economy bringing tourists (especially golfers). It’s the sweetest sight in the world to me – when I drive that bridge I can feel myself relaxing; it’s a whole ‘nother world. My committment to Israel came from growing up in the UK and hearing stories of the horrors visited on Jewish people during WW2 and was firmly committed to their right to have a homeland from which they would never be driven and would never have to experience such horrors again. I cheered Israel on through the 6 day war, the massacre in Munich and the raid on Entebbe among all the other ‘heroic’ deeds that small and beleaguered nation had to perform to struggle among a sea of hostility. I hung onto that even when they started bulldozing Palestinian homes but was finding it harder to view that nation as being heroic or even righteous. I found it hard, but managed anyway, to justify their shelling of Lebanon by agreeing that Israel couldn’t stand by while they were being shelled and the other side was hiding among civilians. Now I don’t know what to think any more. The whole establishment of Israel, if it was done today, would immediately delegitimize it as a nation …. you cannot, as much as you empathize with a people who have suffered so much for so long, just carve out territory and say ‘here you go, have this land – oh, and by the way, don’t worry about the locals, they’ll get used to it’. No wonder the Palestinians are mad as hell – so now my sympathies are split. I’m sorry for both sides and I’m mad as hell at both sides. There just is no easy solution to this terrible dilemma and there is no solution until both sides want it …. all US Presidents who tried, have failed and, with all respect to Pres. I got very angry at that as I had spent 2+ years seeing the damage done to other posters with this groups maniacal behavior and for the first and only time in my life I started baiting him; it was so easy to become like them and I was horrified but I wanted one last chance to let at least one of them know just exactly what it felt like to be on the receiving end.
