The reservations owned by Native Americans are considered kind of sovereign. If a Native American was to get into an incident while they were not on the reservation, local, state and Fed laws would apply. If you are writing an article about racism and describing what people say or said, I don’t find it improper to honestly report what they said or think. Words should not be outlawed but one needs to be very responsible with prudently using words that have been charged with hatred. Having an inkling of what you’d be writing, an anti-racism piece of course, I don’t see an issue with using any words that accurately portray or address racism. On a tangential issue, the epidemic of cancer in the U.S. is reflective of how corporations are pretty much free to poison us through our food, water and air with little interference from government. It is a victory that the tobacco companies were finally sanctioned and regulated but after how many millions of lives were ruined? The sad thing is that it is not until the amount of destruction is overwhelming that the government steps in to say, “You really should stop.” And even then, as you note, the destruction is allowed to continue in myriad ways.
