KT – I am still breathless that Obama was re-elected and that it happened with so much energy and strength of vote! I think this may be less exciting but more important than 2008. In that glorious election the verve had a kind of “rock star” quality to it – everyone on board, everyone ignoring the real man, everyone wanting their 15 seconds of fame, and everyone certain that he was Superman. THIS time we RE-elected him knowing who he is and approving. This is far more important because it just made voting for a man of color ROUTINE. A part of history. A fact. Nothing out of the ordinary. And that means, finally, that ANYONE can be president in the sense of no ascriptive variables standing in his or her way. It also was a blow for organization and operation and democracy over money. I realize that given the GOP penchant for “more of the same” that they may think this means doubling UP on the money and DOWN on the lies – but cooler heads may prevail. It is possible that some among the money men AND the strategists might figure out that “doing what you’ve always done will always get what you always got.” This may be the moment the GOP grows up. Or not. But we routinely, ordinarily, basically, unspectacularly re-elected this man. When I noted that no one was much supporting West, Cain, Rice the meme was that Blacks were too stupid to make good judgements about who was really worthy. Oh? Normally I’d agree that sequestration should protect a number of programs – they were saved out by an agreement NOT to include anything in the Pay-Go settlement – but if Romney wins, he will rescind that agreement, used an EO most likely, and everything including Social Security and Medicare will be up for grabs. Vouchers for the under 55 will immediately gut the money for Medicare for those OVER 55. We would have months, not years, of support. Then the voucher would cover HALF the cost – most policies for us older folks are minimally $1000 per month IF we do not have a pre-existing condition, and the voucher covers HALF of that. Your kids can kiss their inheritance goodbye. The new growth industry will be county poor houses. I think people also better be prepared for an end to federal minimum wage laws. The $3 trillion may come out, but it won’t be jobs as we’ve known them, they will be base pay with “exemptions” for fill in the blank types of work that will “require” a sub minimum wage. Kids will be ‘freed’ to work to help their families. Age of full unsupervised employment may soon be lowered to 12. Same with environmental regs. Keystone, blowing up and all, will be ours right over the Ogallala aquifer. One good leak, and hello groundwater pollution. No CAFE standards for cars unless Detroit figures how useful that is, no regs on drilling anything, and no air quality much less carbon sequestration for fighting global climate change. He was college educated in liberal arts, was not raised to BE a farmer as his parents were not – the farm was well managed by local people, and they just reaped the profits.From late youth when he inherited this estate, this man was a person of leisure. He traveled, had friends in high level places, was modestly engaged in politics (conservative but not wacko – though he probably WOULD be had he lived). And what finally brought my parents’ interactions with him to an end was his relentless, droning commentary about how “no one wants to work” in America. As if he had a clue. He spent huge amounts of energy trying to figure out how NOT to pay well – hated minimum wage, prohibitions against child labor, and all the “restrictions to his freedom” of law and government. But he never had milked a cow, slopped a pig, tilled a furrow not even ONCE and had no inkling how the money that rolled into his pockets ever got there. But he sure did know that “nobody in America wants to work anymore.” These are the kinds of people whose emotional and mental stability WOULD be under threat if they actually had to do something. I think, post Diana, a lot of the angry insecurity I saw is now gone. She did a lot to humanize people and give permission to live fully without a lot of stuffy rules. My second trip in 1996 was a lot more fun and people were a lot more relaxed and at ease. So I think, Cameron notwithstanding, you’d be in a better England than used to exist? Quite an eye opening experience in discomfort. Indeed I’d not sacrifice the house nor move back yet under the Tories – wait and see if sense reclaims the folks. Not that Tony was any great shakes, but maybe all across Britain and Europe people will FINALLY see their way clear to do better things than vote in the same old same old. I have hopes for France. We shall see. But Mondragon is amazing – in the middle of the hell of the EU crisis, they have ZERO unemployment and are still profitable. A coalition of 120 coops with overseas affiliates, and they manage to make do and keep everyone working. It MIGHT have something to do with the fact they can all vote on salaries – the top guy gets 7 times what the production worker does. As opposed to the US where it is 400-600 times the average employee. And they have an independent social service program that keeps their health and welfare costs low and an independent financial system as well. It doesn’t say anything other than the fact that, yes, she has no class. It probably cost the earth, too. Mrs. O in her “Gap” attire is much classier – she does have designer things but is given to basic, practical, middle class affordable clothes, and she shows that looking good does not have to be the province of the ruling elite. Otherwise I understand, to my horror, that Spain is becoming a lot like the US. I heard they ended or cut way back on their single payer health care! Romney is wrong – Europe is on a path toward being like the incredibly dysfunctional US. If austerity measures don’t stop soon, they will look just like us. And that’s not good. We loved Spain, but my fave part is the north, and being not Basque could be a problem since that is the official language and culture. It’s very odd how that impacted me – made me keep thinking I was in Estonia or somewhere, certainly not Spain. But it’s magnificent, the people are amazingly friendly, and I have other friends settling in the south who adore the entire place.
