In order to get federal funding the provinces have to agree to minimum coverage standards. It is also portable with, at most, a 3 month wait if you move to another Province – but all medical costs are covered under your old Prov. plan until yoiur new Prov. plan kicks in. The doctors’ fee-for-service payments are negotiated through their medical association and the Provincial government – for covered services there is no payment from the patient – the physician bills the Province. For uncovered services you either have private insurance through your employer or you pay out of pocket Drugs prices are also negotiated by the Province with the pharma companies so their ‘cheapness’ is a bulk discount. There was talk about the Feds taking over this negotiation so that the discount would be even larger but I have no idea if that went anywhere. My hubby had prostate cancer close to 6 years ago; he was diagnosed, biopsied and operated on within a matter of weeks and after a two day stay in hospital, many followup visits and annual checkups for 5 years with his surgeon it hasn’t cost us one red cent …… and Canadians still manage to have better health care outcomes for less per capita cost than the US I’m glad to hear you finally have reasonable insurance and that you can get medical help for your back problem – yaaaaay for Obamacare!! The only term limit up here is that an election has to be called within 5 years – so, depending on how successful a party is in governing, they can call an election after a couple of years or hang on for the full 5. It makes the opposition parties very careful about pushing the governing party’s back against the wall in a minority situation – they may be blamed by the electorate for forcing an unecessary election. With term limits in the States, there are no consequences for the opposition’s farting around the whole time until the next election – and the next election simply becomes one of messaging and manipulating (a practice that starts as soon as the previous election ends). » Posted By Mightywoof On November 17, 2010 @ 11:55 am Aha!! Thanks Bito – it has been puzzling me for quite a while as to why there are two legislating bodies in your country! Both houses seem to write bills and then have to get together to iron out the differences. I had always assumed that the upper chamber (the Senate in both our countries and the House of Lords in the UK) was a place of ‘sober second thought’ that read and debated the bills passed by the lower house, made any changes they thought were necessary (sending the bill back to the lower house for debate and amendment) and finally passing the bill before sending it to the head of state (President, Governor General, the Queen) for signature. I would seem, from your post, that your Senate has overstepped it’s bounds in trying to both write legislation and win points off the party in power!! I agree that the make-up of the Senate (in Canada as well) is different from the lower house in that it is supposed to provide some relief from the tyranny of the majority but, for that reason, it should not become tyrannous (sp?) itself in forcing a minority view on the rest of the population. A balancing act that the current crop of Senators seem unable to accomplish! From the outside looking in – I would say that the number one item in your Constitution re-write should be that corporations are not people, corporations do not have the rights of a natural-born, living, breathing human being and are only entitled to those rights as proscribed by the law of the land from time to time and that corporations are forbidden from being involved either openly or surreptitiously in politics and elections. That might solve all other problems!! I get to ‘meet’ folks who bring the world into my neck of the woods in southern Ontario!! I live next door to Toronto which is, quite possibly, the most racially diverse citty in the world (a claim that I will not fight over if you wish to dispute it) and I love, love, love all the different ethnicities and their culture and food that they bring with them – but I have to say, I don’t think we have yet had an All Souls parade.
