The hole got decidedly larger as corporations took over more and more of our government…and it grew exponentially when GWB was in power. The individual means nothing…the money is everything. The corporation is all-powerful! There is no way Americans can plead ignorance to the plight of third-world nations as well as some of our own people…grinding poverty, thousands of children dying of starvation and preventable diseases every day around the world, rape used as a weapon of war, and exploitation of the poor and working classes in sweat shops, declining wages and rising prices, the homeless living under bridges, children going to bed hungry each night even in the heart of the greatest nation in the history of the world! There has been so much talk about American “exceptionalism” which is so much bullshit! If we were so “exceptional”, we would not allow these situations to prevail. But we can do nothing because, Dog forbid, the stock market won’t take it so well. We can’t have help for people to save their homes, we can’t feed the children, we can’t pay decent wages, we can’t have health care because it costs too much…but there always seems to be plenty of money when the military-industrial complex comes calling on Congress to fund their latest mega-weapon system! The soul of this country is dying….and the corporations are killing it! Can we stop it from happening? I continue to hold on to that “hope” that President Obama gave us last year. I write, blog, talk to anyone that will listen, and donate what little I can…just a drop in the bucket! But your point about the massive debt, declining standard of living, and the lack of employment opportunities is exactly my point. Without the war, we would have much less debt. Without the war criminals’ profiteering, we certainly would see a better bottom line in our Treasury, not to mention the Wall Street firms that received hundreds of billions that could have been better spent for the good of the people. The lack of employment opportunities might be better if companies were not rewarded with a nice big tax break for closing our manufacturing plants and sending the jobs overseas. These are all issues that President Obama should pay close attention to, IMHO. It makes me so angry to spend $1,500 for a refrigerator, now just OUT of warranty, to completely rust out. It still works properly, but looks absolutely terrible! The doors have completely rusted through the surface coating. I also had a new GM car that the paint peeled off of in sheets! They offered to pay half of the $2,000 paint job to fix it. And another pet peeve of mine…cereal boxes that are the same height, but are much “skinnier” and hold less. But of course, the price is either the same or even higher. The same goes for candy bars…check out a Hershey chocolate bar and note the weight. I have been a rabid supporter of the Public Option. When the news came down that it had essentially been killed, I felt like someone had given me a hard kick in the gut. I felt that the public option was the best way to provide the competition we needed to drive prices down, and I believed that it was a good first step towards a single payer plan for everyone. From what I can tell about this very complex bill, there is little in cost controls. The insurance companies have won…and they are saying so in a leaked email from one of them. Perhaps opening Medicare to 55 yr. old people will do it, but I have serious doubts. From the numbers that have been presented, it is going to cost more than private insurance…some $7,600 per year or $634 per month for individuals. My personal insurance was $440 per month before I lost it. Not very helpful, IMHO. We have been sold out by our Senators. That’s the bottom line. I have lost faith in the people’s ability to have their voices heard by Congress.
