(after being asked how he felt about FL going for Gore) smirked and replied “That’s not what my people tell me.” Something wasn’t right with that picture, and I felt crushed. Forward to 2004, and how it ended. I stayed in bed for four days, a la Brian Wilson, crying. So 2008 was a beautiful and joyous moment. I remember being SO anxious, however, that I refused to go to the party UNTIL they called to tell me that Obama had won PA. I couldn’t even watch it myself. At that point, I could breathe. The inaugural was also a beautiful and celebratory moment. I live in a staunchily Republican district and it was fun looking at people frown! But half of us were smiling to beat the band……what a day!!! I bought a home in one part of my state, while my spouse finished up a year’s worth of work in another part. It was my job to do the remodeling, etc. I met a neighbor who had told me the history of our new home: we were only the fifth owners of the 50 year old house. The first was a military man, the second a military man and his wife WHOSE LAST NAME IS ONLY ONE LETTER DIFFERENT THAN OURS!! The wife died (but not in the house – just while still residing here) and after some time, the man sold the home and moved on. Two more owners and it was ours. During the remodel, I stayed with a nearby friend. I came home to pick up some new undies/pjs, and as I drove up, I noticed the garage door slowly closing on its own (I had not activated the opener). I quickly stopped in front of my neighbors home, cut the lights and engine to watch slumped down peering through the steering wheel. A few minutes later, it began opening. After getting about 1/3 of the way open, it slowly closed. That was enough. I decided robbers were in my home. I drove to the nearby pizza parlor, called the police (HEY! This was before cell phones and it was too late to wake the neighbors) The police asked if I wanted to meet them at the house. “Crap NO!” I replied. “Tell them I’ll be hiding in the oleanders across the street.” The police arrived, I ran out and tossed them the keys and dashed back into the shrubs. I told them to give me an “all clear” signal, which they did after searching the house. As we were finishing up, one policeman said “I can’t tell you why the garage door kept going up and down….” and I interrupted “It’s probably Mrs. Landers ghost!” to which he calmly replied “No ma’am. I believe it’s probably a short in the system.” Nice way to meet the police. What was scary about THIS tale is how I ran and hid under not-well-known neighbors. What if they had seen me and shot me??? Not to mention the start of a relationship with my local law enforcement as that “kooky person with the garage door”. That was 15 years ago, and we all laugh about it now. All that said, I have had numerous encounters that leave no other explanation but some greater mystery of life than I am prepared to explain. As I stated before, the dozens of Afghans I have met (and I keep in touch with probably a dozen or more on a regular-several-times-a-week basis) all want the same thing: security, good governance and education. Going in to supply humanitarian aid without first securing areas is a wasted effort, in my opinion. We can build all the schools we want, and they can easily destroy them. And even if they leave the structure, the Taliban can use the facility to store weapons with which to attack and kill ISAF soldiers (google Sally Goodrich/Peter Goodrich Foundation) or threaten and intimidate teachers. Many have been killed for the simple crime of teaching in a girl’s school. Not to mention what they do to the young girls seeking an education. If you did not do so, PLEASE read George Crile’s book on Charlie Wilson’s War. Skip the movie; Charlie and Joanne saw that they were not painted in an unfavorable light. Joanne Herring loved Zia al-Haq, the Pakistani leader who funneled money into his own pockets first, and then to the mujahideen. 90% or so of the money the US gave went to Gulbuddin Hekmatyr, the warlord now living in Pakistan and who FIRST threw acid on mini-skirt wearing girls attending Kabul University in the 1970s. (NOTE: Also look at the book Bed of Red Flowers, to see for yourself how Afghanistan – at least in Kabul – was NOT always in the seventh century) I hate bullies. I have taught my children that a society will be judged by how it treats the least powerful and disadvantaged among its citizens. I still believe this. So giving it over to the warlords/Taliban to massacre the people as they did during their civil war (post Charlie Wilson’s war and pre-Taliban), and letting it thrive as a narco-state, just makes me sad. True, we cannot police the world. Nor should we. But I feel some responsiblity to the people there. It is my understanding that around 90% supported the US when we arrived in 2001; they watched as nothing happened (in terms of nation rebuilding like water/electricity/hospitals/schools), and warlords were given positions of power, and all our attention was focused on Iraq. That percentage of approval has fallen dramatically to slightly under 50% today. I don’t know how or even if we can improve our image. But I think we owe it to the people whose lives are on the line for trusting us to figure out some way to help. I don’t have the answers, but I’ve at least asked the questions of those who will need to live with the consequences! I have to say, the Afghans I’ve met and worked with are some of the smartest, hardest working people I have ever met. If I had gone through or even seen 1/10 of what they have witnessed/experienced – especially the high schoolers – I would have been curled up in a ball and in therapy for – oh, I don’t know – life? But they have a remarkable capacity to open up and love, and they are the joys of not just my life, but many others who have been fortunate enough to work with/teach them. Sigh. And it’s them, and their families (some of whom I correspond with) that I worry about. We are lucky here – there is only a threat or fear of attacks. There, it is a daily occurence. But there are ways to help, even here – scholarship programs, the YES Afghanistan program run by the U.S. Dept. of State, refugees (if any are coming to your area). I try to make a difference; what I know is that they are a gift to me and I love them all (well, OK except for a few stinkers). She has lived in Af. for 8 years, trying to help. I am acquainted with her, and use her often as a bellweather. She has been saying for YEARS that we need to be seen as a legitimate resource and not “occupiers” and that Karzai may not have been the best choice in the eyes of the Afghan people. Like her, I doubt that we can withdraw – even though the prospect is tempting – without some serious repercussions; but the strategy would HAVE to be more than military. My daddy used to say “You broke it, you fix it”. Guess that’s how I feel about both Iraq and Afghanistan, although I focus much of my attention on Afghanistan because of the network I have built there. I shudder to think of what will happen – no doubt – to any who were involved in any way with the US if we just up and leave. Sigh. It’s hard, and I for one am grateful for dithering. If wolves, it is the female (or bitch) that is the alpha animal. I often joke with my friends about “Who’s the alpha now??” I started lurky-viewing here a few days ago after finding a link on the addictive but frustrating HuffNo. I am observing your boycott – but it’s hard. On Afghanistan: I’m the person who has worked with dozens of Afghans, first as exchange students, now with refugees and soon with soldier trainees from their Army. I have followed Afghanistan for over 30 years (long story on the start), and am friends with several Americans who live/work/serve there. I do understand some of the issues. I don’t pretend to be an expert, but I think I have a pretty good grasp, after listening to maybe 60 people’s perspectives. It’s complicated and not going to be an easy fix. EVERY Afghan I know (without exception) claims to want three things: security, good governance (read: no corruption) and education. They have to work hand-in-hand. One cannot exist without the other. Drone attacks worsen our position, but targeted killings need to be a part of it. Only 10-12% of the population is Talib; they are terrified of these bullies and after 30 years of warfare, afraid to speak out/stand up. Think a whole country with PTSD. Our destinies are interwined, and will be (with or without forces in the area). There are ways to get involved HERE without going over that can and do effect positive change.
