Displaying 91 To 120 Of 19,504 Comments A Farewell to Trump: Oh the Bad Places You’ll Go Thanks for posting this, Murph! Watched it last night and I thought it was brilliant. The actress who played her on Colbert for the last 4 years, Laura Benanti, is such a talented comedian and performer. Always enjoyed watching her “Melania”. » Posted By AdLib On January 20, 2021 @ 11:33 am Weekend Music Thread – U.S. Blues It was so traumatic. It could have been you or students you knew if it had happened earlier. How could the Kent State students protesting have any idea that they could be executed in public for exercising their constitutional right? The evil behind that day is unimaginable. This is what a second Trump term could have given us, one Kent State after another as he crushed and purged his opposition. This is what he tried to do during the George Floyd protests with his secret police. And Republican politicians went right along with him. Even now, many of them are insisting on stopping the impeachment and they use the Republican tactic of reversing guilt, claiming those who want to hold a murderous traitor responsible for his crimes are undermining our seeking unity and will only make things worse. The Kent State killings are still shocking today. A president planning and executing a violent overthrow of the U.S. that threatened the lives of all Congressional leaders and his own VP, killing 5 people in the process and defiling an entire branch of government will never be forgotten either. I think that with distance, the scope and outrage of this traitorous coup will become greater and greater, it’s still too recent for many to really recognize how incredibly horrible it is that this happened. It has broken the Trump “spell” though. Twitter and most of social media have tossed him and even Repubs are supporting impeachment. But he needs to go to prison just as The National Guardsmen who murdered those 4 students at Kent State should have been. Justice is the unifier, it always needs to be served first for any healing to begin. » Posted By AdLib On January 9, 2021 @ 9:02 pm He does a great Paul Simon approximation. » Posted By AdLib On January 9, 2021 @ 2:21 pm The Far Bloodier Coup That Was Intended Thanks Murph. I’m far from alone in seeing a far more dangerous plot hidden under the cover of that mass of raving nutjobs. I think without a doubt, there needs to be a commission to investigate this entire attack, from the planning and funding of it to Trump’s involvement and incitement to support for it by Repub politicians and leaders and members of police and military forces. That’s the second commission I am hoping for in addition to a Trump Crimes Commission that investigates Trump, his family, cabinet and donors for all of the theft of government money that’s gone on, other extortion and blackmail plots like Ukraine, Georgia Secretary of State, etc. Let the crimes of Trump and his cult add up then handed off to AG Garland for thorough prosecution. As for the inauguration, I feel a little differently, I think it would be a sign of weakness and fear to change the site. This is the U.S., the presidency, and our celebration of our democracy. I would instead suggest a beefing up of police and military forces with orders to be highly aggressive towards any potential threats. The police have armored carriers and powerful weapons, the military has heavily armed and trained soldiers and helicopter gunships, not to mention all the “crowd control” weaponry we’ve seen used against the innocent George Floyd protesters. I would not be heartbroken to see these seditionists show up and be crushed and arrested by the hundreds or thousands. They think law enforcement is only to be used against people of color and they are entitled to overthrow our elections when they lose? I’m fine with watching them learn a very hard and painful lesson. It was very heartening to watch Congress return defiantly after being chased out of their chambers and take care of business just as they were going to. I feel the same way about the inauguration. It’s a matter of not bowing to terrorists and giving them the power to change us, that’s their whole goal and what further empowers them. I think they would see a move of the ceremonies as a major victory, one I do not want them to have. And if all of the might of the U.S. can’t protect the president from a rag tag band of nutjobs, the U.S. has already been lost. We can and will defiantly stand against these traitors, Biden and Harris will be inaugurated just as planned (if not with greater force protecting them) and the traitors had better reconsider their foolish ideas or find themselves killed, injured and/or imprisoned for many years as the terrorists they will have proven to be. » Posted By AdLib On January 9, 2021 @ 3:03 pm PlanetPOV 2020: The Year in Graphics So true! I am constantly annoyed by the centrists like McCaskill always beating the drum for pursuing the white male Trump voters to win elections (as I’ve said, she lost exactly because she neglected black voters to chase after white Trumpers). It was clearly black voters in GA who pushed both Warnock and Ossoff over the top and the Dem Party had better take a knee to black voters (and Stacey Abrams) as we move forward because they have been our heroes at the polls. That’s not to diss white or other voters for risking COVID to vote in person or the many who contributed to Biden/Harris and other Dems winning around the country. But I think black voters have been taken too much for granted over the years and I hope that the Dem party holds them in high regard from now on (of course, making Stacey Abrams or a colleague of hers DNC Chairman might be a good start…though I think Abrams has her eye on and deserves to run for Gov in GA in 2022 to beat the man who stole that seat from her in 2018). » Posted By AdLib On January 9, 2021 @ 3:39 pm Thanks Kes! It is a bit hard to believe that all of these things happened in just one year, so much madness condensed into 365 days. And then several days into 2021, we witness something even more horrible, an attempt to destroy our government and democracy to anoint Trump as Dear Leader for life. It wasn’t a surprise that Trump attempted this overthrow of the U.S., folks here have been discussing this eventuality but to see it really happen was still shocking. The coup has failed though, even if more attacks come, Trump will be booted from the WH and Dems will have unitary control in DC. As you say though, there are still reasons to be hopeful (after we work through the shock of this president-led terrorism). GA voters did kick butt, elected a black man and a Jewish man to replace two white racists who were wholly corrupt. Dems will now control The Senate, The House and the White House. I read a post that the last president to cause the opposing party to win back all three was Hoover. So, as hard as it is to say, I suppose we owe a bit to Trump to so infuriating a majority of Americans that they took back all of government from his party. Lastly, you’re right on the money in applauding our courts for holding the line on democracy. All of them, even Trump appointees, stood strong for our democracy and slapped down Trump, Rudy and Powell like the insects they are. There was a lot of justified concerns that Trump judges could act just as subserviently as Repub Congresspeople and help him tear up our democracy. Remember his insistence in getting Coney Barrett on the SCOTUS because he needed 9 justices to decide the election? And none of them supported his overthrow of America. The courts were our last and final safety net to keep our democracy from falling to its death and they held up strongly. My confidence in the strength of our democracy has grown. Now, we need this Dem controlled Congress to pass the new Voting Rights Act that the House already passed last year to put up strong walls against voter suppression and other Repub manipulation of elections. If Dems can protect elections going forward, it could be a long time until Repubs ever hold a lot of power in DC. They’ll be forced out of their RW nutjob silos and will have to appeal to at least folks in the center to get elected. That’s how we can help disinfect our politics of corrosive division and extremism. According to our countdown clock, just 11 days until we end the Trump Era and begin a new Age of Reason in this country (though the Trump Dregs will still need to be crushed by law enforcement). I do think there are many things to be hopeful for including Biden’s statement yesterday that he will propose a multi-trillion COVID/economic bill right away and on Day One, start wiping out Trump’s Executive Orders. Immigration, Climate Change, COVID, Police Reform, Voting Rights, Tax Reform, health care strengthening and improvements, and so much more is being teed up for this year to be passed by a Dem Congress. Real change, Progressive change is coming and hopefully soon, the light at the end of the tunnel on COVID with a president engaged and involved in people getting vaccinated, tested and protected by PPE. Things are shaky right now in the last days of Trump but those days will soon pass and I do think better days are just ahead. » Posted By AdLib On January 9, 2021 @ 3:31 pm That is great work you’re doing. The early vote has been bigger for Dem turnout than in the GE which is a great sign! And the amount of new voters who didn’t vote on Nov 3 and are voting in the run off are around 100,000. We need to keep the momentum going so your work can pay off hugely! How has it been going? After Trump’s attempt to extort the GA SoS into forging the election results to hand Trump the win, I think Dem turnout and outrage in GA will see a big boost. The call was insane raging from a desperate and dangerous madman. Not to mention a violation of state and federal election law…which he needs to be prosecuted for. » Posted By AdLib On January 4, 2021 @ 1:19 am Nice! And thanks so much for the very kind words! You’re right, no Vox tonight but we come back fully recharged next Friday night. » Posted By AdLib On January 1, 2021 @ 7:24 pm Thanks so much, Murph! 2020 was like an evil Rube Goldberg machine with one outrageous event causing or followed by another without a break. It’s still finishing up over the next few weeks at least, as we wait for the mousetrap to finally drop on Trump. Hope you’re having a very nice New Year’s Day and weekend. I think we’ve all earned it and then some! » Posted By AdLib On January 1, 2021 @ 1:50 pm Twas the Nuts Before Christmas Thanks Murph! That Birx reference with kerchief was a no brainer…sorta like Birx smiling helplessly to Trump’s suggestion of injecting disinfectant into people’s bodies. Glad you enjoyed and shared it! » Posted By AdLib On January 2, 2021 @ 3:48 pm So glad you enjoyed it, Kes! Hope you’ve been having a wonderful holiday and continue to as we head towards not just a new year but thankfully a new post-Trump/New Biden-Harris era! Now if we can just win those GA Senate seats then bring in DC and Puerto Rico as new states and pass a new Voting Rights Act, we could keep the majority of Americans empowered and government responsive to their will (for a change)! Happy Holidays, my friend! » Posted By AdLib On December 27, 2020 @ 3:59 pm Thanks so much, Kalima! As of today, 24 days until Biden is President! And until Trump is fair game to be prosecuted and sued into oblivion! I expect more madness from him as he panics and the end for him comes closer but I still say he is far too much of a coward to stay in the WH after noon on Inauguration Day, he would be afraid of the SS and US Marshals who he has abused with COVID and his fascism happily turning on him and “escorting” him out of the WH like a shoplifter at Walmart. Which may be the type of crime he’ll be reduced to after his business falls apart and no one including Deutsche Bank will be willing to lend him any more money. I think the hyper-partisanship may calm down a bit as Trump loses the big stage and spotlight (and will probably be kicked off of Twitter). And the stink of “loser”, “liar” and “fascist”grows worse with each passing day “and prosecution in NY state). » Posted By AdLib On December 27, 2020 @ 3:55 pm First off, I wholly understand and appreciate your POV. In this case, when lazy thinkers fall back on mental health as the reason a shooting took place, it’s empowering those behind that diversion, namely the death merchant industry of guns. But many Dem politicians have bought into the same propaganda. It is not propaganda that some people who commit gun murders are struggling with mental health issues but as you point out, people deal with this all over the world but only in the U.S. do we have so many mass shootings and gun-related murders. So mental health is not causing the tsunami of shootings elsewhere, why only in the U.S.? The only country that has the right to own a gun in its constitution? And more guns in the country than people (857 million guns in America, enough for every person in America, man woman, and child, to own two guns). It couldn’t be simpler. Mental health issues are far more common among all countries’ populations than most might assume. But the availability of guns is a simple, Occam’s Razor conclusion as to why the U.S. has so many shootings and other countries don’t. Because we have incredible availability and stockpiles of guns. Yet, there are people who mistakenly have bought into the NRA propaganda about ignoring gun availability and blaming mental health exclusively as the cause of gun deaths, the old BS of “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Really? Without a gun, how easy would it be for many who have killed to have killed anyone? Some may have managed anyway but many would not have. So this flawed theory falls apart with very simple logic. I don’t know why otherwise thoughtful people can be so quick to adopt someone else’s alleged reasoning without at least running it through their own logic detector first. It only gives aid and comfort to the malefactors propagating such distractions to protect their murderous industry. In any case, people should be set straight when they help the gun industries and support future killings by passing off NRA propaganda as their own thoughtful opinions. » Posted By AdLib On December 19, 2020 @ 2:42 pm The Poison Well, Font of Perpetual Defeat It is also one of my annoyances to see some of these so-called “Lefties” act no differently than narrow-minded, blind faith MAGA nuts. They follow their self-appointed leaders like mindless sheep, regurgitate the same self-righteous BS they’re fed, and display no sign of critical thinking. The games are the same with both MAGA nuts and “Lefty” intolerants (I will address the quote marks momentarily), espouse what they believe makes them morally superior to everyone else, display intolerance of other opinions, argue using simplistic generalities, and ignoring the many contradictions to their flawed beliefs. I am a solid Progressive but had the odd experience of seeing the mantle of “The Left” be hung this year on the most self-important, narrow-minded Bernie Sanders absolutists who dispute their “Left” credentials frequently by opposing any Progressive change just as MAGA nuts do, they just use the excuse that it doesn’t go far enough. They are not “Left” or Progressives because they de facto stand in the way of progress. Extremism paired with self-righteousness and intolerance are the traits of would-be elitists and authoritarians, not Progressives or “The Left”. As you say Dore and Ball are phonies like many others in the purist crowd, exploiting the very easily exploited “Lefties” whose insecurity makes them need to feel morally superior no differently than insecure MAGA loons need to feel superior to minorities. True Progressives on “The Left” want progress ASAP. They are inclusive and reasoned. They fight for what they want and begrudgingly accept the most amount of change they can see accomplished now without pausing their fight to achieve their goals. They aren’t authoritarians who need cult-like leaders like Bernie Sanders to be their sage and avatar. He has a number of good positions on issues but he is not Jesus and bowing to him shouldn’t be used as a litmus test for being Progressive. True Progressives think for themselves, they may have differing opinions on how to accomplish Progressive goals but they agree on the big picture and don’t see anyone of good will as an adversary. But those exploiting “Lefites” to further their personal greed and ambition are my adversaries as much as such MAGA exploiters are. » Posted By AdLib On December 19, 2020 @ 2:07 pm Trump Legal Team Accidentally Sue Themselves for Fraud I feel exactly the same and it’s been a bit of an obstacle to writing as much satire as I have before Trump was in the WH. In a normal time, the president wearing a diaper, lifts and a girdle would be a joke. As would having an illiterate, racist, moron as the president. That’s how one might ridicule a president. But today, it’s called reporting the news. Rudy Giuliani is a parody of Rudy Giuliani. If someone on SNL was playing him tomorrow night as an unhinged, babbling, lunatic dripping hair dye down his sweaty face and mugging in bizarre ways while fondling himself in a faux documentary…to someone who came out of a coma today, they would think I was satirizing someone. But the sunlight is peaking through the clouds, just 47 days to go until both I and satire can rest easy again. Poor satire but as it says, “You think I’m in bad shape? Have a look at irony!” » Posted By AdLib On December 4, 2020 @ 8:29 pm Weekend Music Thread – I Want to Thank You Fun one! » Posted By AdLib On November 21, 2020 @ 9:31 pm Forgot about this one, nice pick! » Posted By AdLib On November 21, 2020 @ 9:30 pm And well you should! » Posted By AdLib On November 21, 2020 @ 9:29 pm For better or worse, at least the impeachment trial will be over next week, Trump’s image and place in history will forever be stained by his sedition and hopefully, even if he isn’t convicted of his blatant crimes against this nation, he will be convicted in GA, NY and elsewhere. Unsurprisingly and in line with your article, Trump’s defense today is relying on racist attacks on Dem people of color in Congress and whataboutism racism against BLM to defend Trump by, apparently, trying to grade on a curve. Trump’s proven sedition vs. racist propaganda and conspiracy theories. Yeah, real close call. And it’s our pleasure to publish your articles, I always look forward to reading and discussing them. Keep ’em coming! » Posted By AdLib On February 12, 2021 @ 10:26 am Here’s a link to the MSNBC article on VP Harris’ power as President of the Senate to end the filibuster. » Posted By AdLib On February 9, 2021 @ 12:36 am Fantastic and very powerful piece, twilson117! We’re now seeing the deviously racist Republicans now trying to pass hundreds of laws in the Republican-run states that will devastate voting rights, especially for people of color. In AZ, they’ve even gone so blatant that they are trying to pass a law that allows the legislature to steal the election away from voters and award electors to whoever they choose…after the election, if they don’t like the results and needing no cause to do so, just an anti-constitutional theft of the election by majority vote. There is little pretense at this point. The strong turnout in 2020, especially from black voters, is now seen by Repubs as something that must be shut down ASAP. These corrupt politicians don’t want to try to win over voters and win an election fairly because they know they are repulsive to a majority of voters. They tried to rig this election then tried to overturn it then when those attempts failed, they supported a coup to overthrow our democracy and turn the U.S. into an oppressive tyranny. They have no principles, no issues to convince more voters aside from the racists and unprincipled ones they already have. In fact, trying to appeal to decent people who aren’t Republican would offend their current cultist supporters who want no compromise and the oppression and even deaths of any who don’t worship white supremacy and its cult leader, Trump. This is why the John Lewis Voting Rights Bill must be passed, to stop this latest and massive push to reinstate Jim Crow in many states. In order to do that, the filibuster must be ended. I know there are a few Dems who oppose ending the filibuster but I read an article recently proposing that as President of the Senate, VP Kamala Harris may have the power to declare the filibuster unconstitutional and simply end it. This should happen once the smoke clears from the Trump impeachment. We must use the law to protect the civil rights of all Americans, especially those who have been and are now more at risk of having their right to vote stolen from them. » Posted By AdLib On February 8, 2021 @ 5:49 pm How smoking saved my father’s life. First, wonderful story and so happy your dad was saved by the cigarette case.
