Coming on the heels of their insistence that The Earth is 5,000 years old, evolution is a lie straight from the pit of Hell and Climate Change is a myth, the latest Republican meme is that arithmetic is a hoax.
In disputing the latest, positive numbers on falling unemployment and Obamacare enrollment, Republican politicians and pundits insisted that the numbers, since they now no longer supported Republican arguments, had to be dishonest and manufactured.
Texas Senator and re-used grease salesman Ted Cruz was rumored to go as far as to say that math is a left wing invention that’s used to deceive the public.
I sat down with Senator Cruz to explore these allegations.
ADLIB: Senator Cruz, you said last week that you believed the numbers presented by the Obama Administration that proved unemployment had dropped to 6.3% were false. You’ve seen all the numbers behind this estimate, what leads you to conclude that this number isn’t accurate?
CRUZ: Anyone can add any numbers together and come up with whatever answer they want.
ADLIB: But that wouldn’t mean it’s correct.
CRUZ: That’s my point!
ADLIB: If I said 2 plus 2 equals 4, isn’t that the only correct answer?
CRUZ: I can list the names of a number of Republican economists who would disagree with you. The jury is still out on whether adding 2 and 2 equals 4 but that’s exactly what the liberal elitists want us to think, that there’s only one answer to a problem and it’s theirs.
ADLIB: So there is another answer to that problem?
CRUZ: Many patriotic Republicans who work hard and play by the rules but think 2 plus 2 equals 5 and they are attacked by people on the Left for their beliefs. Is this a free country or isn’t it?
ADLIB: So do you see belief as valid as counting when it comes to math?
CRUZ: Absolutely. This nation was founded on faith. We would be disrespecting the Founders and the 14 original colonies they brought together to start this country if we abandoned our faith in any situation.
ADLIB: You mean 13 colonies.
CRUZ: Don’t force your opinions on me.
ADLIB: Isn’t it provable though, that if you held 2 apples in one hand and 2 apples in the other, you would be holding 4 apples?
CRUZ: Not necessarily. Maybe I’m allergic to apples so I wouldn’t be holding them in the first place. Maybe one apple was really just a picture of an apple. Maybe I also was holding an apple in my mouth. Then I might be holding 3 apples or 5 apples. How do you like them apples?
ADLIB: If we don’t have common understandings about certain absolutes such as math and science, wouldn’t that cause serious problems for us as a functioning society?
CRUZ: Just as we don’t believe that the science is in on science and that math doesn’t add up correctly, many Republicans such as myself believe the definition of words like “functioning society” can’t be defined. To you, a “functioning society” might be something that helps people. But in our minds, if a society is functioning like an anti-colonial, pro-Muslim terrorists, non-birth-certificated tyranny, a functioning society would be the enemy of all Americans. We want to be the party of the non-functioning society and I think we’ve positioned ourselves that way.
ADLIB: Then what are your plans if you win the majorities in both houses of Congress and maybe even win the White House in 2016?
CRUZ: The first bill I would propose in that scenario is an Amendment to the Constitution that changes the 3rd Amendment and limits free speech so that it is illegal to call something a fact unless 100% of people agree that it is.
ADLIB: It’s the 1st Amendment that establishes Free Speech.
CRUZ: Is that a fact? Not once my Amendment passes!
ADLIB: So even though 97% of all scientists agree that we’re going through man made global climate change…
CRUZ: It’s not 100% so it’s not a fact.
ADLIB: So if there’s at least a fraction of a percent of people who don’t believe the Earth is round…
CRUZ: Then it’s not a fact.
ADLIB: But our society would fall apart if we could never agree on any facts.
CRUZ: I don’t agree, that’s not a fact. Think how empowered Americans will be when they can stand up and say whatever they believe and no one can say that something else is a fact! At spelling bees, everyone will be a winner! All companies can declare profits each quarter! Republicans and Fox News will look honest! It will be an American Renaissance!
ADLIB: How would teachers be able to teach children if anything they say could be treated as not being a fact?
CRUZ: Not true. In fact, this is a real job creator! Anyone will be able to take a job as a teacher! You don’t have to pass tests, you don’t have to know what history books say or worry that you don’t know the periodic table. If you want to teach, all you need is a pulse and a mouth!
ADLIB: It seems self-apparent that such an environment would lead to children being poorly educated and less able to function in the real world when they grow up. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this.
CRUZ: I don’t agree.

Wow Kes, what a great “get” of an interview, kept me riveted and fascinated (and a little sympathetic for your having to go through it). Where was the interview held, in Barton’s secret closet where his mother used to send him when he was a “sinful” boy?
Are these loons soon denial that they are wholly unaware of what frauds they are? Or is it more of a game they play, knowing full well their background isn’t legit but they pretend it is and see if they can fool others?
At a time when our students’ test scores are dropping compared to the rest of the world, these wackos would rather take MORE time away from them to learn math, English, science etc., so they can be taught Christian religious beliefs as facst (I assume these so-called religious people wouldn’t want the Koran taught too)?
Religion is about faith and in the US, it’s about the freedom to follow one’s own religious beliefs. It is not something that is appropriate to force upon all children as cold, absolutist facts like multiplication and gravity especially because there are a variety of religious beliefs among people and they conflict.
There is only one correct answer to, “What is 2 + 2?” (unless you’re Ted Cruz) but how can there be any one correct answer when it comes to religious beliefs?

What a spot on analysis of MR. BARTON…and what a wonderful way to bring to light the absolute ignorance of Barton and those who think the way he does.
Many who profess to be Christians, or for that manner you can substitute most religions in the spot where I put Christians, use their religion as those in medieval times used the battering ram: The concept behind the battering ram is simple – momentum coupled with mass. In other words, take a heavy object and hurl it repeatedly at a stationary object, such as a door or gate, to break through the object. Typically a large tree would be felled and the branches removed to allow those that remained to be used as grips. A group of soldiers would lift the tree trunk and, after a running start to build momentum, ram the trunk into whatever they wanted to break through, generally a castle gate. If this was done enough times, the door would break open.
In the case of religion, those like MR. Barton and others try to use religion to break through the mental defenses of those they would try to brainwash into believing the things they believe about religion, a slight bit different I’ll admit than what those in medieval times used the battering ram to do, but I still submit the concept is the same, they use psychology and judgmental attitudes to break down the defenses of those who eventually submit to their way of thinking.
I too would like to commend you on your stamina. Your staying power during this interview was commendable to say the least, how did you ever hang in there for as long as you did? I’m so happy you were able to inadvertently dial 9-1-1 at the end, I believe it would have been much better if you had dialed that number right before you started the interview and then left the call open for the 9-1-1 operator to hear the conversation you had with Mr. Barton, I’m sure that if you had Mr. (Dr.) Barton would be convalescing in some nice institution at this time. 😉

I agree with you choice lady. I dislike the fact that he was given these honors, but when I think back to my days in college, I realize in the heat of the moment and through hard work, friendly relations etc., one can qualify and win many awards….that doesn’t mean you are the most talented, most intelligent, or even the most worthy, it just means that in that given moment you are favored by a panel that believes you have potential.
I guess in the case of Cruz, if we could have seen who was adjudicating and then found out who Cruz’s opposition was, we might have a better aspect as to why he received the awards. Career’s are made, and they begin during these formative years, almost nothing connected with the lives of people who plan a political career is left to chance.
Thank you for your response, and again, I also dislike the fact that he was judged worthy of receiving awards and accolades, however, we have to remember this was an earlier period in his life, and at that time he may have deserved them. When Ted Cruz and George Bush and the Wall Streeters who blew up our economy via greed and fraud, are examples of what Harvard, Princeton, etc. produce, one needs to re-evaluate one’s perception of what “geniuses” graduate from there.

I find it disheartening, to say the least, when I continue to see Americans duped by people like “Teddy.” It is so sad to watch, however, I have to return to what I have said before; if those that support people like Cruz would listen to his entire conversation, watch how the things he advocates leads to division in so many ways, they may wake up and realize just how mislead they truly are. The actions of those who support people like Cruz and others who think as he does is tantamount to what will be the fall of the nation from within IMHO. Division is the great conqueror. 🙂

So Ted Cruz wasn’t born here and his father — who, unlike Obama’s father, was an actual presence in his son’s life — fought with a commie, bribed his way to America, and has pledged loyalty to three countries in his lifetime. One can interpret the “great transfer of wealth” — predicted by Ted Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz, and by Pastor Larry Huch, who threw his Texas megachurch’s considerable heft behind the 2012 Cruz for Senate campaign — in magical terms, sure.
But Ted Cruz’ apparently notable role in getting George W. Bush into the presidency led in turn to Bush’s “Faith Based Initiative” – that continues to this day under two successive Obama administrations and which, during the Bush years, funneled billions of dollars to churches and institutions associated with the religious right.
In other words, the “great transfer of wealth” is about more than wishful thinking. It’s about an ongoing effort, by leaders and institutions of the evangelical right, to gradually gobble up the secular sphere of government.
Thus, for example, fast growing Christian schools such as the late Moral Majority co-founder Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, which now vacuums up hundreds of millions of dollars in federal student aid money each year. Or the hundreds of millions of diverted tax dollars now flowing, in a least 12 U.S. states, under so-called “neo-voucher” schemes, to private schools – many of which, as explored in a new Rolling Stone story, have virulently anti-LGBT policies. Under Bush, too, several billion dollars per year in USAID funding were shifted from secular aid nonprofits to religious ones, some them holding anti-gay and reactionary, even theocratic, underlying ideology.

Exfanofariana, thanks for this article. We have had some great posts here by SueInCa and Choicelady on the Dominionists and this is exactly what their delusions and mission is.
At the same time, I think the article might be giving Cruz more credit than he deserves. Saying that Cruz delivered the conservative evangelical vote to Bush in the 2000 election seems a bit exaggerated. Not only were there many others on the Right delivering the evangelical vote, they are part of the RW Repub base anyway (they weren’t voting for Al Gore in the first place).
Also, as a counterpoint to the religious schools and universities that take taxpayer money, there is a marked decline in those who self-identify as following a religion and in church attendance. I don’t think the popular momentum is towards supporting more intrusions of religious extremism and giving them greater power and wealth..
And Ted Cruz and his loon of a father can pray for oppression against all those in the world who don’t share their twisted beliefs but that won’t change the fact they’re too deluded to recognize, Ted Cruz will only have less power and influence as time goes on, he will never be President..
If memory serves me right, it was the looney Raygun who brought into his campaign the “evangelical “hysterical s” starting with Bill Graham???

CL, any interview with Ted Cruz makes me dizzy! The feedback from just having him sit near a microphone with that tin foil hat is maddening enough!
Wouldn’t the tin foil actually interfere with transmission over the airwaves, and wouldn’t that be a BLESSING to ALL listeners????? Consider that the foil also kept his hyper-zapped brainwaves from despoiling your own and think how much better this is than if you’d been interviewing him without it!
Hey Ad, that’s quite a coup getting Ted Cruz to do an interview. So he doesn’t believe in facts, math, science, or history (thought I’d add that in).
His party seems to believe in their own lies. From having no minimum wage to tax cuts for the rich they are consistently on the wrong side of things.
Maybe you could get some other GOtP big shots to do interviews.
Nirek, when I mentioned to Cruz that an interview with him would be a coup for The Planet, he repeated the words, “Coup of planet…yeah…” and agreed to do it.
I think the goal now for the GOP is to optimize lying. They know they lie, that’s not the problem, it’s having to walk back a lie after it’s exposed.
I think that’s a good idea, a series of interviews with GOP figures sounds like a lot of fun!
