Albert Einstein

Coming on the heels of their insistence that The Earth is 5,000 years old, evolution is a lie straight from the pit of Hell and Climate Change is a myth, the latest Republican meme is that arithmetic is a hoax.

In disputing the latest, positive numbers on falling unemployment and Obamacare enrollment, Republican politicians and pundits insisted that the numbers, since they now no longer supported Republican arguments, had to be dishonest and manufactured.

Texas Senator and re-used grease salesman Ted Cruz was rumored to go as far as to say that math is a left wing invention that’s used to deceive the public.

I sat down with Senator Cruz to explore these allegations.

ADLIB: Senator Cruz, you said last week that you believed the numbers presented by the Obama Administration that proved unemployment had dropped to 6.3% were false. You’ve seen all the numbers behind this estimate, what leads you to conclude that this number isn’t accurate?

CRUZ: Anyone can add any numbers together and come up with whatever answer they want.

ADLIB: But that wouldn’t mean it’s correct.

CRUZ: That’s my point!

ADLIB: If I said 2 plus 2 equals 4, isn’t that the only correct answer?

CRUZ: I can list the names of a number of Republican economists who would disagree with you. The jury is still out on whether adding 2 and 2 equals 4 but that’s exactly what the liberal elitists want us to think, that there’s only one answer to a problem and it’s theirs.

ADLIB: So there is another answer to that problem?

CRUZ: Many patriotic Republicans who work hard and play by the rules but think 2 plus 2 equals 5 and they are attacked by people on the Left for their beliefs. Is this a free country or isn’t it?

ADLIB: So do you see belief as valid as counting when it comes to math?

CRUZ: Absolutely. This nation was founded on faith. We would be disrespecting the Founders and the 14 original colonies they brought together to start this country if we abandoned our faith in any situation.

ADLIB: You mean 13 colonies.

CRUZ: Don’t force your opinions on me.

ADLIB: Isn’t it provable though, that if you held 2 apples in one hand and 2 apples in the other, you would be holding 4 apples?

CRUZ: Not necessarily. Maybe I’m allergic to apples so I wouldn’t be holding them in the first place. Maybe one apple was really just a picture of an apple. Maybe I also was holding an apple in my mouth. Then I might be holding 3 apples or 5 apples. How do you like them apples?

ADLIB: If we don’t have common understandings about certain absolutes such as math and science, wouldn’t that cause serious problems for us as a functioning society?

CRUZ: Just as we don’t believe that the science is in on science and that math doesn’t add up correctly, many Republicans such as myself believe the definition of words like “functioning society” can’t be defined. To you, a “functioning society” might be something that helps people. But in our minds, if a society is functioning like an anti-colonial, pro-Muslim terrorists, non-birth-certificated tyranny, a functioning society would be the enemy of all Americans. We want to be the party of the non-functioning society and I think we’ve positioned ourselves that way.

ADLIB: Then what are your plans if you win the majorities in both houses of Congress and maybe even win the White House in 2016?

CRUZ: The first bill I would propose in that scenario is an Amendment to the Constitution that changes the 3rd Amendment and limits free speech so that it is illegal to call something a fact unless 100% of people agree that it is.

ADLIB: It’s the 1st Amendment that establishes Free Speech.

CRUZ: Is that a fact? Not once my Amendment passes!

ADLIB: So even though 97% of all scientists agree that we’re going through man made global climate change…

CRUZ: It’s not 100% so it’s not a fact.

ADLIB: So if there’s at least a fraction of a percent of people who don’t believe the Earth is round…

CRUZ: Then it’s not a fact.

ADLIB: But our society would fall apart if we could never agree on any facts.

CRUZ: I don’t agree, that’s not a fact. Think how empowered Americans will be when they can stand up and say whatever they believe and no one can say that something else is a fact! At spelling bees, everyone will be a winner! All companies can declare profits each quarter! Republicans and Fox News will look honest! It will be an American Renaissance!

ADLIB: How would teachers be able to teach children if anything they say could be treated as not being a fact?

CRUZ: Not true. In fact, this is a real job creator! Anyone will be able to take a job as a teacher! You don’t have to pass tests, you don’t have to know what history books say or worry that you don’t know the periodic table. If you want to teach, all you need is a pulse and a mouth!

ADLIB: It seems self-apparent that such an environment would lead to children being poorly educated and less able to function in the real world when they grow up. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this.

CRUZ: I don’t agree.

Hi, Adlib. I like you article, however I only gave it a rating of 1 out of 10 because your numbers don’t add up. hope you understand. 😉

What a coincidence, AdLib! I was lucky enough to get an interview with GOP Christian “Historian,” David Barton. He does for history what Cruz does for math.

kes: Hello, Mr. Barton.

DB: Please. Call me Dr. Barton.

kes: Really? I didn’t know you had a PhD.

DB: I don’t. But I am “an expert in historical and constitutional issues.” It says so right here in my press release.

kes: I…see… Well, what are your credentials then if I may ask, sir?

DB: I have a bachelor’s degree in “Christian Education” — from Oral Roberts University.

kes: Right. Yes. And what is your teaching experience?

DB: For your information, Nancy Drew, I was principal of Aleda Christian School.

kes: Indeed. And who founded that school?

DB: My parents.

kes: *cough* *cough* (spit take)

kes: So…as a self-appointed historian, what is the main theme of your body of work?

DB: It’s that the founders never intended this country to operate on the notion of separation of church and state.

kes: WHAT? That principle is clear in the Constitution! — which is second only to the Old Testament is your two-book library here.

DB: That’s your opinion. Isn’t my opinion is as valid as yours?

kes: At least my degree was in History!

DB: So what? God is on my side.

kes: Well, if your history is so impressive, what awards have you won?

DB: I’ll have you know that my 2012 book “The Jefferson Lies” won the History News Network’s “Least Credible Book in Print” award.

kes: I don’t doubt it. And what university position do you hold?

DB: I’m far too erudite to waste my time at your librul decadent universities. My job title is: Member of the Board of the “National Council on Biblical Curriculum in Public Schools.”

kes: But that’s just the point. There shouldn’t BE a biblical curriculum in public schools.

DB: So say you and Satan. The founders said otherwise. They planned this country to be a Christian nation. But only one version of “Christian,” you understand. They didn’t want any Catholics or other off-brands. That’s why they left England. Too much tolerance there.

kes: {bangs her head on the desk three times… coincidentally hitting the phone to dial out the numbers 9-1-1.}

What a spot on analysis of MR. BARTON…and what a wonderful way to bring to light the absolute ignorance of Barton and those who think the way he does.

Many who profess to be Christians, or for that manner you can substitute most religions in the spot where I put Christians, use their religion as those in medieval times used the battering ram: The concept behind the battering ram is simple – momentum coupled with mass. In other words, take a heavy object and hurl it repeatedly at a stationary object, such as a door or gate, to break through the object. Typically a large tree would be felled and the branches removed to allow those that remained to be used as grips. A group of soldiers would lift the tree trunk and, after a running start to build momentum, ram the trunk into whatever they wanted to break through, generally a castle gate. If this was done enough times, the door would break open.

In the case of religion, those like MR. Barton and others try to use religion to break through the mental defenses of those they would try to brainwash into believing the things they believe about religion, a slight bit different I’ll admit than what those in medieval times used the battering ram to do, but I still submit the concept is the same, they use psychology and judgmental attitudes to break down the defenses of those who eventually submit to their way of thinking.

I too would like to commend you on your stamina. Your staying power during this interview was commendable to say the least, how did you ever hang in there for as long as you did? I’m so happy you were able to inadvertently dial 9-1-1 at the end, I believe it would have been much better if you had dialed that number right before you started the interview and then left the call open for the 9-1-1 operator to hear the conversation you had with Mr. Barton, I’m sure that if you had Mr. (Dr.) Barton would be convalescing in some nice institution at this time. 😉

Many thanks, monicaangela! I’m glad you got a smile from the “interview.” And I totally agree that the crew of guys in white coats should have arrived much earlier than they did. And they really should have kept him in that padded cell a lot longer.

But at least we had time to get this great scoop for the Planet! 😉

I agree with the battering ram concept of Bartonesque religion. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually used to pave the way for their real religion: unregulated capitalism.

Cruz attended high school at Faith West Academy in Katy, Texas,[32] and later graduated from Second Baptist High School in Houston as valedictorian in 1988.[18] During high school, Cruz participated in a Houston-based group called the Free Market Education Foundation where Cruz learned about free-market economic philosophers such as Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, Frédéric Bastiat and Ludwig von Mises.[27] The program was run by Rolland Storey and Cruz entered the program at the age of 13.[25]

Cruz graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1992.[2][7] While at Princeton, he competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel and won the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.[33] In 1992, he was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year and Team of the Year (with his debate partner, David Panton).[33] Cruz was also a semi-finalist at the 1995 World Universities Debating Championship, making him Princeton’s highest-ranked debater at the championship.[34][35] Princeton’s debate team later named their annual novice championship after Cruz.[34]

Cruz’s senior thesis on the separation of powers, titled “Clipping the Wings of Angels,” draws its inspiration from a passage attributed to President James Madison: “If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.” Cruz argued that the drafters of the Constitution intended to protect the rights of their constituents, and the last two items in the Bill of Rights offered an explicit stop against an all-powerful state. Cruz wrote: “They simply do so from different directions. The Tenth stops new powers, and the Ninth fortifies all other rights, or non-powers.”[31][36]

After graduating from Princeton, Cruz attended Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1995 with a Juris Doctor.[2][37] While at Harvard Law, Cruz was a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review, and executive editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, and a founding editor of the Harvard Latino Law Review.[7] Referring to Cruz’s time as a student at Harvard Law, Professor Alan Dershowitz said, “Cruz was off-the-charts brilliant.”[19][38][39][40][41][42] At Harvard Law, Cruz was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law and Economics

Either there is something really, really wrong with the higher education facilities in this country or Cruz is a total fake. You can choose which you would believe. I can’t understand why you took the time to interview someone who even at a glance from a distance is an obvious phony. 😉

I loved this article AdLib, it is exactly what should be written in opinion pages of the best newspapers in this nation, every blog, news site etc., on the web, should have this article written by you, it exposes Cruz for exactly what he is, someone who would lie, cheat, steal, and do anything in his power to try to confuse those who have not had the opportunity to get the education he has gotten.

Helping others allows an individual to use his/her talents and skills to assist someone who is in need. When you use your talents and time to help others, you have done your part to make the world a better place.

Republicans and Democrats have used accounting gimmicks and competing government analyses to deceive the public into believing that 2 + 2 = 6. If our leaders cannot agree on the numbers, if ‘facts’ are fictional, how can they possibly have a substantive debate on solutions?

~~~~~~~~~~~J. C. Watts
I am of this opinion: If the citizens of this nation because of petty differences choose to continue to allow Flim Flam men like Ted Cruz to deceive them, if they continue to vote them into office over one petty issue or another, then they deserve what they get, and in that case IMHO it doesn’t matter whether 2+2=4,6,or8, they will be allowing someone else to do their thinking for them so whatever that person decides will be good enough for them. I feel sorry for the people of this nation who have managed to muck up what could have been a great democracy, an example for all the world….It’s really sad.
I do believe Ted Cruz would be as self-centered and egotistical as he is today even if he had never attended a liberal institution or any institution other than a mental institution.
I guess the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree after all. 🙂
LOL!! I think you’re probably right, but it still sticks in my craw he was judged worthy at ANYTHING. Went to his already demented head.
monicaangela
I agree with you choice lady. I dislike the fact that he was given these honors, but when I think back to my days in college, I realize in the heat of the moment and through hard work, friendly relations etc., one can qualify and win many awards….that doesn’t mean you are the most talented, most intelligent, or even the most worthy, it just means that in that given moment you are favored by a panel that believes you have potential.
I guess in the case of Cruz, if we could have seen who was adjudicating and then found out who Cruz’s opposition was, we might have a better aspect as to why he received the awards. Career’s are made, and they begin during these formative years, almost nothing connected with the lives of people who plan a political career is left to chance.
Thank you for your response, and again, I also dislike the fact that he was judged worthy of receiving awards and accolades, however, we have to remember this was an earlier period in his life, and at that time he may have deserved them. The fact of the matter is, his recent actions don’t lead me to believe he could have ever been worthy of winning anything and that says an awful lot about education and how one chooses to use the knowledge they gain from being “educated.” There are a lot of educated fools in this world. 🙂
Monica, your post confirms what I’v known for a long time. Cruz is an educated idiot! Education bought rather than earned is worthless!
Seems to me that the teapublicans are in a secret competition to see who can say the most ridiculous and outrageous things before November. The winner gets a pointy hat, a magic wand, and a run at the presidency. Although “run” should be replaced with stumble or a three-legged sack race hop. So much for all the media buzz about their efforts for image changing. Huge flop.
So Teddy, how many people are there in “marriage is between one man and one woman”? Two? Three? More??
They can’t count because if you look closely, they are all missing their middle fingers as they have used them once too often against the American people and your Constitution.
Love it, AdLib!! 😆
Spot on Kalima!
I find it disheartening, to say the least, when I continue to see Americans duped by people like “Teddy.” It is so sad to watch, however, I have to return to what I have said before; if those that support people like Cruz would listen to his entire conversation, watch how the things he advocates leads to division in so many ways, they may wake up and realize just how mislead they truly are. The actions of those who support people like Cruz and others who think as he does is tantamount to what will be the fall of the nation from within IMHO. Division is the great conqueror. 🙂
TED CRUZ’S FATHER FOUGHT WITH FIDEL. WAIT, WHAT?
I agree that wingnut demigod Ted Cruz is being hypocritical in this defense of his hard-line immigration stance, but the thing that really sticks out for me is the fact that his father fought with Fidel Castro. Um, isn’t being the fruit of a lefty revolutionary’s loins supposed to put a politician under a permanent cloud of suspicion, according to wingnuts? Or is that true only if the pol is named Obama?
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says that comprehensive immigration reform is “incredibly unfair to those who follow the rules,” even though his father admits that he was forced to use bribes to immigrate from Cuba.
In an interview aired by NPR on Thursday, Cruz held up his father, 74-year-old Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, as an example of why it was wrong to offer a path to citizenship to the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States illegally.
“I came to this country legally,” Rafael Cruz told NPR…..
The older Cruz explained that he had once fought with Fidel Castro’s forces in Cuba to overthrow Fulgencio Batista, a U.S.-backed dictator. He later fled to the United States after receiving a four-year student visa to study at the University of Texas.
“Then the only other thing that I needed was an exit permit from the Batista government,” Rafael Cruz said. “A friend of the family, a lawyer friend of my father, basically bribed a Batista official to stamp my passport with an exit permit.” …
So Rafael Cruz fought with Castro and bribed the anti-communist government that opposed Castro. Anything else?
After his student visa expired, Rafael Cruz obtained political asylum in the U.S. He then found work with the oil industry in Canada, where Ted Cruz was born.
Rafael Cruz became a Canadian citizen while in Canada. While his son was serving as solicitor general of Texas in 2005, Rafael Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship and became and American citizen.
So Ted Cruz wasn’t born here and his father — who, unlike Obama’s father, was an actual presence in his son’s life — fought with a commie, bribed his way to America, and has pledged loyalty to three countries in his lifetime. I know Canada ain’t Kenya or Indonesia, but can you imagine if this were Obama’s origin story?
Ted Cruz’s Father Suggested His Son Is ‘Anointed’ to Bring About ‘End Time Transfer of Wealth’
“The pastor [Huch] referred to Proverbs 13:22, a little while ago, which says that the wealth of the wicked is stored for the righteous. And it is through the kings, anointed to take dominion, that that transfer of wealth is going to occur.” – Rafael Cruz, August 26, 2012
In a sermon last year at an Irving, Texas, megachurch that helped elect Ted Cruz to the United States Senate, Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz indicated that his son was among the evangelical Christians who are anointed as “kings” to take control of all sectors of society, an agenda commonly referred to as the “Seven Mountains” mandate, and “bring the spoils of war to the priests”, thus helping to bring about a prophesied “great transfer of wealth”, from the “wicked” to righteous gentile believers. link to video of Rafael Cruz describing the “great transfer of wealth” and the role of anointed “kings” in various sectors of society, including government, who are to “bring the spoils of war to the priests”.
Rafael Cruz’ dominionist sermon given August 26, 2012, at the New Beginnings Church of pastor Larry Huch, in Irving, Texas has already received considerable scrutiny due to an excellent Huffington Post commentary by Methodist Associate Pastor Morgan Guyton, who noted the explicitly dominionist nature of pastor Cruz’ sermon, which concerned the divine mandate for believers, with anointing of “kings” in their respective spheres, to take control over all sectors of society.
Cruz spoke of “Kings who are anointed to go to war, win the war, and bring the spoils of war to the priests.”
Discussion of the now-notorious speech by Rafael Cruz has missed the fact that Ted Cruz was subsequently blessed and anointed by prominent dominionist pastors, in effect as a “king” in the political/governmental sphere, at a special blessing ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, at a July 19th-20th 2013 rally designed to draw pastors into politics.
But in a very real, mundane sense Ted Cruz has already helped deliver hundreds of millions of dollars, or more, to the evangelical right. Cruz’ past service – as a “king” who brought “spoils to the priests” – is a matter of established record; as I revealed in a prior story, no less than a top adviser to President George W. Bush has stated that in 1999 Ted Cruz played a major role in helping the Bush for President campaign lock down the conservative evangelical vote in the 2000 election.
One can interpret the “great transfer of wealth” — predicted by Ted Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz, and by Pastor Larry Huch, who threw his Texas megachurch’s considerable heft behind the 2012 Cruz for Senate campaign — in magical terms, sure.
But Ted Cruz’ apparently notable role in getting George W. Bush into the presidency led in turn to Bush’s “Faith Based Initiative” – that continues to this day under two successive Obama administrations and which, during the Bush years, funneled billions of dollars to churches and institutions associated with the religious right.
In other words, the “great transfer of wealth” is about more than wishful thinking. It’s about an ongoing effort, by leaders and institutions of the evangelical right, to gradually gobble up the secular sphere of government.
Thus, for example, fast growing Christian schools such as the late Moral Majority co-founder Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, which now vacuums up hundreds of millions of dollars in federal student aid money each year. Or the hundreds of millions of diverted tax dollars now flowing, in a least 12 U.S. states, under so-called “neo-voucher” schemes, to private schools – many of which, as explored in a new Rolling Stone story, have virulently anti-LGBT policies. Under Bush, too, several billion dollars per year in USAID funding were shifted from secular aid nonprofits to religious ones, some them holding anti-gay and reactionary, even theocratic, underlying ideology.
The BIG, UGLY FLY in this ointment is that Rand Paul was anointed right along with Teddy. So whom has God actually chosen? And two years ago Rick Perry was anointed onstage at a huge (LOL!) rally in Texas.
So if all the anointed are to be President, but there are a number of anointees (OK – I made up that word) then which one is really God’s fave?
AP: Pro-McConnell Super PAC unleashes “unrelenting barrage of negative ads” against Grimes
Friend — The $522,000 onslaught described above is their largest attack blitz against Alison Grimes yet — not of the week, not of the month, but of the ENTIRE ELECTION.
A new poll — Grimes (D) 45 – McConnell (R) 46 — shows their previous attacks have erased Grimes’ 4-point lead. But this new tidal wave of attacks aims to hand McConnell an unconquerable lead THIS WEEK and buy the Senate for the GOP.
The choice is yours today: If we can match these attacks dollar-for-dollar, the New York Times reports that “Grimes could pull off a historic upset,” defeat Mitch ‘I’m a guardian of gridlock’ McConnell, and “offer a decisive vote in the fight for control of the Senate.”
But if you let attacks like these go unanswered, we’ll lose any chance we had to defeat McConnell and stop a Republican Senate takeover.
We still need 4,500 more anti-McConnell Democrats to step up before Friday. Will you be one of them?
Hey Ad, that’s quite a coup getting Ted Cruz to do an interview. So he doesn’t believe in facts, math, science, or history (thought I’d add that in).
His party seems to believe in their own lies. From having no minimum wage to tax cuts for the rich they are consistently on the wrong side of things.
Maybe you could get some other GOtP big shots to do interviews.
