Vox Populi, our Weekly live chat about the week’s events begins tonight at 7:00 pm PT. Hope to see you then!

AdLib2 hours ago

Hi AdLib

choicelady

Hey CL!

AdLiban hour ago

How is the convention in the backyard coming along?

AdLiban hour ago

It’s a zoo, and WORDS will need to be said. They’ve allowed people in after midnight, and that’s a nonstarter. It’s OK, not awful, but not good either.

choicelady

No, not at all. Maybe you should hand out a page of rules to each that include needing to leave if they violate key rules?

AdLiban hour ago

I mean, you’re bending over backwards to accomodate so many of them who would have nowhere else to go, they can at least follow reasonable rules or have to go.

AdLiban hour ago

I hate doing that. It’s so Victorian Values, but it may come down to it. Rick, our longest “tenant” is NOT happy. The gate squeaks and wakes him up. So yes, we need a community meeting at least. Then everyone went off and left Sadie the Dog, and she didn’t know anyone was left and began to howl. I settled her down, but that’s just mean.

choicelady

I had to ask Louise to leave because her wacko sons were two coming in.

choicelady

Her older son is the one who threatened to burn us out. NOT having him here.

choicelady

It’s so unfair of those making it hard on you and the considerate people there. You know best, if handing out rules is not cool, no need to. But a community meeting? Absolutely. You obviously need to lay down the law now.

AdLiban hour ago

Not sure how long I’ll be on tonight. I got violently sick Wed. night, vomiting and dizziness. NO clue why. Still lightheaded and very tired. Nothing we ate. No clue. But I’m really exhausted still.

choicelady

That is insane, about Louise’s son. Shemay not be able to control them if they’re wackos.

AdLiban hour ago

Oh no! You’re sure it’s nothing you ate?

AdLiban hour ago

Yes – Greg ate the same things, no problem. And not the “lettuce attack” either – no runs. I’m definitely better but not eating much yet.

choicelady

It’s the fatigue that is getting to me. I slept almost all day yesterday and NEVER do that.

choicelady

Well, glad you’re better but you do need protein to keep up your strength. Maybe some chicken soup?

AdLiban hour ago

I know how that is, you’re dehydrated and need protein.

AdLiban hour ago

I will make soup, but I ordered out and got a souvlaki with lettuce-free salad. We can share one order, and it’s sitting fine for now.

choicelady

I’m drinking so much water I’ll float soon!

choicelady

Ah, that’s good to hear! You’re being very smart about caring for yourself.

AdLiban hour ago

I’m also steering clear of dairy.

choicelady

I have almost no appetite but did get actually HUNGRY. So I ate.

choicelady

So great news about Paramount having to stop the Warners take over until 2027. And I think they will be stopped in court in this case, for good and all.

AdLiban hour ago

Oh I hadn’t heard it was that long a delay!!! Woo hoo! I do think you should move ahead with the B Corp plan though – competition is good. A place for ACTUAL actors not AI generated slop.

choicelady

Yes, dairy is very bad to have with a stomach issue. Causes lots of trouble. My wife has a cold, had to stop her from eating dairy during it, it produces more mucus too.

AdLiban hour ago

Dairy feels as if it should soothe. It doesn’t!

choicelady

Thanks to you, I have returned to thinking out my B Corp plan and the pause in pursuing it has given me a clearer approach. Told my wife that you spurred me on to pick it back up!

AdLiban hour ago

Dairy is soothing for depression. Cheese, ice cream, etc. But for ailments? Nope.

AdLiban hour ago

But I have another business I’m putting together now as well as that project I mentioned to you. Don’t want to put out any details publicly here on any of them but we should chat next week and catch up!

AdLiban hour ago

BTW, TW texted me to let me know he wouldn’t be here tonight. He is missed as always but I totally understand when people have things to do.

AdLiban hour ago

I have this hypothesis, grounded in history, that when all else is besetting you – if you can’t beat it, move outside of it. That’s the idea behind worker owned businesses. It’s how almost every small village in England came to be. People left the manor system, settled on ‘wild land’ which then were not claimed, and started subsistence farming that eventually grew. It’s not a “Jeremiah Johnson” approach but a few people banding together to make an autonomous community. Well, businesses can do that. You might not produce films for major distribution at first, but there are indie theaters out there.

choicelady

While secession was a non starter in a country, “economic secession” is tried and true.

choicelady

You are so damn brilliant! I have been describing that approach to my wife because I have fully adopted it now. This seems like an ideal time to offer the kinds of alternatives that people are so hungry for.

AdLiban hour ago

I am applying that kind of “outside the established” thinking to everything I am working on. With billionaires smothering creativity and originality, there sure seems to be a big audience out there that wants more than Spam The Movie.

AdLiban hour ago

It’s also a hedge against state corporatism so beloved by the cosplay socialists. I think all forms of corporatism – private and state – are antithetical to actual freedom and democracy. I was told, POINT BLANK but a DSA prof of mine grad school that my idea of worker coops would never be “allowed” by the state. That reinforced my hate of their views.

choicelady

Spam the Movie wouldn’t appeal to millions. (Though I had a grilled Spam sandwich once and liked it. Once.) I think economic secession and autonomy are really important to people’s ability to engage with their own work in positive ways.

choicelady

Heh! Such proud ignorance in them. Growing up as young guy in the 70’s, the concept of independence was cemented into me. Not conforming, not bowing to the “establishment” and though that has evolved in me in various ways, my response to these times is the same as you and millions of our fellow Americans, screw them, we’ll play ball in the streets and people will come to watch.

AdLib42 minutes ago

What I meant by Spam The Movie is processed, unnatural and uniformly created movies and series that are simply created to be identical to previous ones that made money for the billionaire owners of studios and streamers. That’s why no matter how many subscriptions people have, they often say, “There’s nothing to watch”.

AdLib40 minutes ago

I always was an outsider wherever I was. I’m the only white person I know whose entire Civil Rights Work was done alone w the Black community. It’s why I’m so idiosyncratic about virtually everything. My vision was set in ways not usual. Sounds as if yours was not of the times either. Conformity I can do and do well – until I run screaming. But doing what you WANT to do HOW you want that helps others, too? Primo.

choicelady

I totally agree about Spam the Movie. There are just so many versions of “Hallmark Christmas Movies” anyone can bear.

choicelady

OTOH, I never was a hippy, never flouted the rules. I just found ways to do the right thing despite the rules.

choicelady

Indeed, it is those who think “outside the box”, who come to conclusions on their own about what should be and what can be that truly change the world for the better. Sure, unity can be a positive thing too but it can also be the most awful and destructive thing as Trump and MAGA have proven.

AdLib38 minutes ago

Here’s where critical thinking comes in. Anarchy and nihilism are also pernicious. Social conformity and obedience are pernicious. We are looking for the ‘sweet spot’.

choicelady

And it won’t be the same for everyone, so we need to let go of others and let them be who they need to be.

choicelady

As a young guy at the time, I saw the hippy thing as very cool. And the Nixonian divide, the Generation Gap, clearly put me on the other side of a hateful and corrupt Repub mindset back then.

AdLib36 minutes ago

Yes – I was raised by socially conscious parents who detested Nixon from the start.

choicelady

So Greg and I have a major difference of opinion on LBJ. I was anti war, but I’d experienced the wonderfulness of OEO programs in liberating Black communities. I do not hate him. Greg, as a draft-aged male, will never forgive him for Vietnam.

choicelady

Yep, the sweet spot should be the goal. I have always been independently minded and sometimes concerned about conforming. But my thought is, when people come to the same moral or principled conclusion on their own because they are thoughtful people, there is a unity of individuals, not conformity.

AdLib34 minutes ago

And yet we coexist, Greg and I!

choicelady

That coming together is agreement. It’s not conformity.

choicelady

Conformity is what you do because you must. Agreement is what you do because you want to.

choicelady

I am of two minds on LBJ, it’s not a black and white thing to me. One one hand, the Vietnam War, on the other hand, the CRA. Sometimes things are mixed in life and many shades of gray.

AdLib32 minutes ago

Greg knows that and respects OEO and CRA and still can’t forgive him for Vietnam. I get it.

choicelady

Gray is good.

choicelady

Yes, I am all for agreement and like-minded people unifying on shared beliefs. To me, conforming is kind of an unreasoning thing, more of an emotional need to belong and that can make people belong to groups of people who do horrible things which makes confromists just as guilty.

AdLib31 minutes ago

I get Greg too amd respect his POV.

AdLib30 minutes ago

I know that feeling. It’s sickening. To belong to a group the values of which make you queasy is really hard.

choicelady

I see so many MAGA and DSA creating rationales for someone they THINK they should admire. We all need the little kid who says the Emperor is buck naked and go with it.

choicelady

Coincidentally, I think many Americans, even Repubs, are all coming together in a meeting of the minds to reject and oppose Trump. It sure isn’t conformity, people are using reason and facts, like their inability to pay their bills, to come to a legit conclusion. Weirdly, Trump may bring Repubs and Dems together more than anything has in the past.

AdLib29 minutes ago

Very true. He is the great unifier!

choicelady

I think a situation like Platner is the proof in the pudding. I stepped back from him, he was the better of two evils but evil himself. So when the last shoe dropped on him, it was heartening to see so many people embrace replacing him.

AdLib27 minutes ago

I hope the new guy, Jackson, isn’t an ass.

choicelady

There was not a kneejerk conformity to stay behind Platner no matter what. That was the last straw that validated the resentment so many had to keep a lid on because re-electing Collins was empowering an even more evil man, Trump.

AdLib26 minutes ago

Jackson sure seems to be the guy Platner pretended to be. A long time union man and leader, blue collar, all totally legit. This seems to have really worked out for the best. And he’s leading Collins in polls which I think will grow between now and Nov.

AdLib24 minutes ago

When actual polls were done, it showed Platner pretty far behind Collins. His polls showed him trouncing her. After he dropped out, they got an eyefull discovering he was NOT that popular.

choicelady

I do relate to Jackson pretty well. He’s like the guys I taught in Cornell Un. Labor Studies program. Hope he’s as good as they were.

choicelady

Yes! Dems do have principles and sure seems like after enough bad stuff came out, they were holding their noses to vote for him. But once it crossed a red line, people were quick to kick him out and replace him with someone they could respect. Looks like we have that now and I would be so happy not to have another Fetterman in the Senate and see the last of Collins.

AdLib23 minutes ago

I am comfortable in almost any environment, but blue collar industrial workers are very much loved. It was 30 years ago, but they were great.

choicelady

No more Fettermans! No more Collinses.

choicelady

Very cool! I’m good with them too, I am absolutely not an elitist and have had many friends, including on my softball team, who are blue collar, work construction, etc. and are great guys.

AdLib21 minutes ago

Here-here!

AdLib21 minutes ago

Did you know that Prop. 45 that proposes to loosen SEQA standards and shorten public comment is OPPOSED by CA Building and Trades? They stand w the environmentalists in wanting to preserve what standards we have. That is radically NOT self interest. I am so impressed!

choicelady

CEQA not SEQA

choicelady

BTW, I think I see one of Trump’s plots for the election. He has decimated the intelligence entities that would protect elections from foreign interference, I think he wants Putin to step in to try and hand him the midterms as Putin did in 2016 and possibly in 2024. But it won’t work. Cheating may move the needle a couple of percent, enough to win a close race like for president but the volume of anti-Trump/Repub voting will be too great.

AdLib19 minutes ago

No, I didn’t know that! Then who is pushing Prop 45?

AdLib18 minutes ago

“We are voting, hear us roar, in numbers too big to ignore! ” (h/t Helen Reddy)

choicelady

45 is pushed by contractors, realtors, all the “build and squeeze ’em dry” interests.

choicelady

I need to hear that song again! I love defiant music and films right now! Defiance is in and I’m a paying member!

AdLib16 minutes ago

Oh, 45 is also backed – you’ll be shocked, NOT – by the CA Chamber of Commerce.

choicelady

Of course, the likely greedy suspects. I think being obscenely wealthy is not going to remain as comfortable as it is right now. And did you see, Musk has lost at least half a trillion in equity since Spacex and Tesla stock has been nosediving?

AdLib15 minutes ago

That is happily shocking!

AdLib14 minutes ago

And if this AI crash happens as it’s predicted to do, Musk could find himself trying to move into your backyard.

AdLib14 minutes ago

I could NOT be happier about the rapid decline of Musk

choicelady

Trust me on this – among Greg, Rick, and me, Musk will find NO quarter in our backyard. And Sadie the dog would bite him. She never bit anyone. She would him.

choicelady

All of these modern day Marie Antoinettes have a lot to think about as the future comes about.

AdLib12 minutes ago

I don’t want the guillotine, but the public stocks as we discussed, do hold appeal.

choicelady

I would pay to see Sadie bite Musk. If you livestreamed it, you have more views than Trump’s WH lawn wrestling match.

AdLib11 minutes ago

That’s for damned sure!

choicelady

I’m fine with putting them in guillotines…on Snake Island.

AdLib10 minutes ago

Or in Jurassic Park.

AdLib10 minutes ago

I hope you mean stocks. One you guillotine them, it’s too messy.

choicelady

Why shouldn’t the raptors get to join in on the fun?

AdLib10 minutes ago

Once you guillotine them.

choicelady

Oh yes, I meant stocks!

AdLib10 minutes ago

That works.

choicelady

Well…without wanting to mention details here, that’s why I’m optimistic about what happens in that project I’m working on that I told you about.

AdLib8 minutes ago

I think you would clean up with it. Very much so.

choicelady

I’ve mentioned to my wife, there’s a big audience out there that I think would really want to see what happens in it.

AdLib7 minutes ago

BTW – I’m embarrassed to admit I stupidly erased your email with your film link in it before I actually went to watch it. Can you resend it? Saving August was it? I got sidetracked, and it went in a clean out of email. Dumb, but I do want to see it.

choicelady

No worries, I will send you the link again.

AdLib5 minutes ago

I DO think it would give millions visceral pleasure to have a film like the one you’re considering.

choicelady

I have a cameo in it, see if you can spot me.

AdLib5 minutes ago

Thanks. I HAVE a folder for your emails. I will store it IMMEDIATELY.

choicelady

OK!

choicelady

I’m meeting with my friend who is a film sales agent and got my other film on streamers, to get her thoughts on the best path forward. It is going to happen.

AdLib4 minutes ago

One reason I want November to come sooner than later is so Murph will be done w politics and can come back. Miss him.

choicelady

And I’m excited as you can imagine.

AdLib4 minutes ago

That’s just GREAT. It’s exciting!

choicelady

Same here! He’s really been away so much, never like this before and he is missed.

AdLib3 minutes ago

I’m surprised a bit we don’t see more of PPO now the season is over. I hope that means he’s living his best life. He deserves to be.

choicelady

Well, I think I’m fading out. I have the jitters which means more water is needed. But I now feel better overall than I have for several months. If I could just not be so TIRED it would be grand.

choicelady

PPO still seems to be sailing or being a part of races, when he left the other week, it was to go to one.

AdLiba minute ago

Get some water and rest! I will send you that leak and maybe we can chat next week?

AdLiba minute ago

I thought with the Deep Midwinter they were done. So that would explain his not being here. I’m glad he has that to do.

choicelady

a few seconds ago

link

AdLiba few seconds ago

Same here!

AdLiba few seconds ago

Yes. We’re in TX the 30th to Aug. 2 for the funeral. Then the following week is really free. Greg is off to Star Trek in Vegas the 5th-9th.

choicelady

a few seconds ago

Take care!!!

choicelady

a few seconds ago

That sounds like fun!

AdLibin a few seconds
