I wasn’t an alter boy, but I did play guitar in the church folk group for a very short while (God, it was lame). By the time I had become an adult, I had broken away from the church. The reason was simple. You can believe in a Creator without hanging on to a convoluted dogma that spins itself in circles to keep itself alive and has no value of its own. The other reason I split was Christianity has nothing to do with Jesus anymore. Not Christ. Jesus. The reason Jesus was important was the profound things he had to say for the way we should treat each other. Christ was the fairy tale about the miracles, the rising from the dead after being assassinated, the after-death instructions about how to build His Church, how JC somehow saved us from something that they were never really clear about. Jesus didn’t save us from ourselves, that much is clear. The Christian church today focuses almost entirely on the paranormal stuff and essentially ignores the Word of the Man. And they wonder why people are turning away from the Church. Nirek, you make an excellent point. I’ve been wondering for some time now whether civics and history classes were being taught in school. Both subjects were something we used to groan about when I was a student in the 70s but the information in those classes was invaluable. Our kids today graduate from school, even college, seemingly having no clue how the world actually works. That informational void gets filled with fantasy versions by the religious right and Fox News and other BS from the GOP. I don’t see how we can do anything in the short term about making history and civics compulsory, as the GOP has control of both Congress and SCOTUS, and they would fight him tooth and nail over this. The GOP functions best when the voting public remains ignorant. I was very busy on Tuesday but I made the time to get to the polls and cast my vote: I was expecting a lot of people due to what I was hearing about the rest of the country. But there were very few people there, and there were no solicitors out front, which I thought was odd. The mood of some of the people there was a bit gloomy, which I didn’t understand until the next day when I heard that voter turnout was so extremely low. Now I never thought of myself as a political junky, I just pay attention. But I never thought that people would care so little as to let the incompetent GOP just take over by default. I turned 18 in the ’70s a few months after the draft ended, although I have a health condition that would have excluded me anyway. This is supposed to be a decade where we pull out of the wars started by the Bush administration. We are supposed to start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan this year. By they way, ISIS doesn’t stand for “Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.” ISIS stands for “I Suck I Suck” (repeat continuously until the message sinks in). One thing that survived pretty much intact: the money-changers in the temple. They’re still there. My Dad was one of them. He was part of a group that dealt with the money collected at Sunday Masses. I always referred to them as the “money-changers”, which made my Mom laugh.

Per your suggestion I agree that we should militarise our borders, even set up bases along it. Take this job away from the yahoo militias that are currently pretending to protect us from “ferriners.” Put them in charge of the ports too.
It’s been my opinion for decades that we don’t defend our nation by fighting in foreign wars. The goal of the military should be to defend the HOMELAND. If we were defending our homeland in 2001, the 9/11 attacks would not have happened. Why? Because we would have been ready to defend our homeland and the rest of the world would know that.
Seems to me that our willingness to bet involved in foreign conflicts is partly responsible for why the rest of the world seems so unwilling to defend itself. They seem to just hang back and wait for the U.S.A. top step in and fix everything no matter how long it takes, and they resent us for sticking our military nose in.
Our message to the rest of the world should be: “Grow up already! Defend yourself, because we won’t. If you aren’t willing to defend yourself you deserve to be taken over.” I have no problem with helping out our friends with airstrikes, advice and strategy. But the “boots on the ground” should come from the nation that is defending itself.
