I’ve met some of his torture victims, and his despotic ways were beyond tolerable. But so long as we got oil from him, we looked the other way. So honoring the demands of Iraq for us to get out – demands Bush set in place – this was the PREDICTABLE result. They never should have sent such a sweethearted man into combat – that should have made him eligible for support not combat work. He was in uniform (photos taken early on prove that) but if you’re going for a walk or to the latrine, you would probably NOT take your gun etc. We don’t know what all he sent home, maybe stuff he’d picked up somewhere, and maybe his worldly possessions. Maybe he WAS suicidal, and maybe just confused. But he did not hand over his loyalty, and that is absolute fact. We’d have known it if he had. His life in Idaho was made up of long walks, solitary ones, around his countryside. There are reports he was apparently captured in the latrine – not that he’d strayed. We need to know a whole lot more, but I for one give him kudos for hating where he was when he thought he was headed there to help the people, not kill them. I don’t necessarily read this as a suicide note because I don’t think he’d do that to his family. But it is the mark of a man who might go for a long walk – something he’d done before with NO opposition – to clear his mind and determine how he could reconcile his conflicting responsibilities. Had the Koch brothers not ginned up a massive protest against ACA that morphed into the Tea Party, it might have done. The demands by the outraged Left for not getting the revisions of 40 years of conservatism overnight led to the ‘send the Dems a message and don’t vote’ strategy in 2010. Data show that Dems did NOT vote by a larger margin than the GOP. And here we are, stuck with the most ignorant and pernicious set of Congress people in our history. Even the Know Nothings of the 1850s were not this bad. I don’t fault the attempt at bipartisanship. I fault the drive for public vengeance by so-called progressives leading to opting out of the electoral system for where we are. Democracy in the US is based on a two party system, and not voting is not an option. Every time someone stands down and fails to vote, it IS a strength for the opposition. That cannot happen any longer – we need a powerful and supportive Congress if we are ever to get things done well. He was homeschooled, had an amazingly free life roaming the fields and woods of his hometown, and probably was the least prepared person in America to be in the military. He apparently thought he’d be doing quasi-Peace Corps work helping the people of Afghanistan. I can see how he’d have a major break with reality under those circumstances. I gather several people died looking for him. That is beyond awful, but if he walked away to go someplace where he would be safe – physically and mentally – then he was captured, well, it sort of doesn’t change anything. He is an American. We do not leave Americans behind EVER. As the President said – period. Full stop. What is not being discussed is why these five men could not be tried. This group – at some point dubbed ‘the worst of the worst’ – never had ANY charges against them. The reason they cannot be tried is that they were TORTURED by the Bush regime. We cannot use a single word of ‘confession’ or evidence against them, yet, because they were supposedly doing evil things, we were reluctant to assume their innocence. However, they were incarcerated BEFORE the war in Iraq and without much declared action in Afghanistan, and there is now evidence they did NOTHING other than get in harm’s way of US forces that captured them. Once Bush thought they could be fair game for torture, the legal standing became so muddy we had very little choice but to hold them. They have been in MEDIUM security, allowed interactive contact with one another, and treated as low risk people. THAT should tell us all we need to know. They are NOT the ‘worst of the worst’. I would add a sad note to all of the above and that is the way in which even those in fundamental agreement have allowed divisions to come between us. A recent story (http://www.vox.com/2014/5/15/5710402/andrew-cuomo-future-of-the-democratic-party) about Andrew Cuomo’s massive capitulation to Wall Street disturbed me a lot. On Vox (not our original to be sure), the article showed that Cuomo has the backing of those supporting ‘values’ issues due to his courage in supporting marriage equality, etc. all the while he’s selling the store with tax cuts to corporations, etc. that is going largely unchallenged. So liberal/progressive ‘values voters’ are giving a pass just as conservative values voters did in Kansas et al. both ignoring the huge hit to the economy their respective leaders are making. Here in CA Jerry Brown is much the same. Our state budget does nothing for those whose meager, razor-thin support was cut further during the past years of crisis and keeps them in dire want while he supposedly pays down debt with new-found income. But hey – he’s good on social issues liberals crave, so even labor whom he has trashed is giving him a pass, too. These are ‘pragmatic liberals’. They may be the future of the Dems. On the other hand, EmoProgs ignore this trend as well for, even as they wish to ‘perp walk’ bankers who caused the 2008 crash, they don’t seem at all interested in the overall health of an economy that supports them while continuing to demolish working class and poor families. CA has the highest poverty rate in the NATION, and only a scant few are calling for massive change in serious ways. So apparently if we get our ‘values’ shored up, we can ignore racism, class strangulation, joblessness for the less elite whether we are white Mid-America residents on one hand or bi-coastal elites on the other. Add in the massive split between the progressive faith community and secular activists – the spitting hate of the latter toward the former is NOT to be believed – that once was the bedrock of unity in the Civil Rights and anti-war movements. Without our keen awareness of one another’s issues and needs, without a willingness to work together even when we’re not the same, without a massive return of respect for others different from ourselves, we are doomed. The split of the GOP will simply be echoed in the Dems. We can’t recapture a working democracy unless everyone in it makes an effort. This IS the goal of the Koch brothers and their ilk – divide, and they shall conquer.
