I attempted to post a reply about ten minutes ago and lost it. (Rats!) The upshot was that cautionary tales such as yours are important, but do keep in mind that it’s early days (only a week or so). Also, v. important is deygirl’s acknowledgment that HuffPo served (there’s an “ed”) as an important forum for progressive voices; indeed, many of the people who are friends here and now met there and then. Per usual, when one or more parties of a divorce come to the place where they are able to “concede the concessionables”, moving on is in the offing.

DG (and others),

I’m post-Hume–or at least I wasn’t a late night HuffPo regular (I probably won’t be able to properly blog until ten years from now–time contraints)–and so have missed the glory that was Hume. I don’t know whether his HuffPo account is still up, but if so, would you and some others like to post “Hume’s Greatest Hits” or some such?

Hi Placebo.

If I remember correctly, you simply click on your username and that takes you to your profile, and from there, there’s another link towards the top that says something such as “settings”. On that page of your profile, half way down the page in rather small font, you have the option to delete your profile…and after you’ve hit delete, you will be asked to confirm.

That said (that explained?), there’s no reason to delete your HuffPo profile unless you absolutely must. (You could always become that nobelest of creatures, the stealth Planet raider!! :0) I deleted my HuffPo profile because some knucklehead tagged a disagreement reply with a rather nasty, gratuitous ad hominem & I needed to move on from the toxicity that is HuffPo-Troll, but perhaps you’re made of sterner stuff.

I ADORE scouting…my little guy is a Tiger Cub this year and he just won first place at his first Pinewood Derby…and we did the campus/map reading course for his first belt loop…and we’re going to do the astronomy course at our local planetarium for the astronomy loop…and we’re going camping this summer: Whoo-Hoo!!

(…I think the “looking for the girlscout camp” comes a bit later. I’ll “drop off” my involvement by then. ;0)

In any event, it’s a blast ticks and all!!

I’ve talked with him about the fallacy of popularity exclusively for assessing choices among peers which, at this point in his life, doesn’t matter much, but will in, oh, five years’ time. As for televised shows and movies, if the content is good or excellent in some aspect, we talk about that; otherwise, we talk about what is representative of reality and what is not. (He’s very good at making the distinction…so much so that he sometimes ruins the “mood” for me directly after viewing. ;0) I figure, I hope correctly, that if it isn’t percieved as real then it won’t severly impact his self-image. Time will tell.

I intentionally and explicitly talk to my son about television ads and ciruculars…we disect the language used, the emotional manipulation and whether the products advertised are “needs or wants”. We also go into what something is worth…how it was made, how much it cost to produce it and whether it’s worth the asking price. (He’s now has a jaundice view of most advertisement, although he did just this evening fall in love with a special effects laser sword for $16.99 + tax and shipping…until we laid the dollars out to see exactly what $17.00 laid out end to end looks like. ;0)

I’d like to deconstruct Sponge Bob as well, but so far I haven’t had the heart…

…but, yes, there’s nothing terribly real, or remotely appealing, about most entertainment media, and (generally speaking) there’s not enough integrity or intelligence in televised news media.

Welcome to the Planet and thank you for sharing your story. I sometimes look at my snaggle-toothed first grader and feel momentarily saddened when I think fleetingly of getting him through adolescence to young adulthood as a black male. Indeed, I feel that the battle has already begun…the negative stereotyping of black males in education almost take my breath away.

If I may speak plainly, it’s irksome that a Harvard law graduate cum constitutional law professor just isn’t “good enough”. The old thought is that you have to be twice as good to get half the credit…but, given McCain and Palin combined, being expoentially more accomplished still isn’t good enough. And the way such lesser men (O’Reilly, et al) talk about him and to him: the racism in this country is simply appalling.
