I don’t know about anyone else on the Planet, but I’m old enough to remember what the world was like for women before abortion was de-criminalized …… home made remedies (a bottle of gin and a hot bath) or back street butchers (coat hanger hooks and dirty tables) were the norm …… and women died – D E A D died. So not only does criminalizing abortion not prevent the death of a fetus, it also adds the death of the woman to it’s grisly toll. And for those of you women too young to remember what life was like for a woman pre legal abortions – your body was not your own, it belonged to everybody else except you. I cannot tell you the sense of freedom I felt when abortion became legal in Canada – finally, I was a Person! So I walked to my family room and switched on the TV flipping from CBC to CNN and back again, watching the pictures of the burning tower, horrified that it was burning and not believing what was now being reported as fact – a plane had flown into the tower. Then – even now I cry remembering it – the second plane flew from behind and to the left as I looked at the screen and it smashed into the second tower. The explosion – the flames – the horror – the intense grief and disbelief. In my head I was screaming No No No …. maybe I screamed it aloud. I shall never get the image of that poor man falling/jumping from the tower out of my head or of the towers just crumpling up into dust. The whole world stood at America’s side on that day and in the following months – and it is hard to imagine it was 9 years ago. They have been winning seats in Westminster – 20 seats in their first election of 1992. Canada has 5 parties, 4 of whom are actually in Parliament (Conservatives, Liberals, NDP and the Bloc – the 5th party are the Greens and they made a good showing but didn’t win a seat). The UK has many parties but, and Marion could correct me here, for many years there were only two that held seats – the Conservatives and Labour. I think the LibDems won seats in the last election for the first time (at least in my memory) – there are many parties in the UK. Depending on the actual vote system used the Parliamentary system can provide a very stable form of government – first past the post (like Canada’s) means whoever wins the most seats gets to be the government. If the government has a majority then they really get to govern, if they get a minority they can still govern but can be over turned if the other parties vote against them on a budget bill. The most unstable form of democratic government, in my view, is proportional representation – it may be more democratic than first past the post but then you end up with a government that can’t govern and the most peculiar (and occasionally unsavoury) bedfellows (Israel and the hard religious right comes to mind). There’s a lot more to it than that. I also think having defined terms of government is bad for democracy – if a government (in your case the Dems) cannot get the confidence of the House then another election should be called – it;s amazing how it concentrates the minds of those in government if they don’t want to go back to the voters! You’re right about the divisiveness right now – I think there are many reasons for this – globalisation where the middle and lower income folks have seen their jobs disappear to the east, the increasing divide between the haves and the have-nots, a political class that seems to be more concerned with large corporations rather than the ‘man in the street’, turning from small c to large C capitalism and, this is my personal beef, turning citizens into customers …… it’s a never ending and exhausting list! » Posted By Mightywoof On September 3, 2010 @ 9:38 am Mid-Atlantic Trip Part 6: The Southern Capital I forgot to say – you should get to the Canadian Rockies Khirad. I hate mountains (close your ears Pepe) on account of I’m afraid of heights – in fact I have a photo of one spot where we stopped off at a photo point and the juxtaposition of the mountain angles and the road angles as it wound down below made me so dizzy my sis had to help me back to the car!! That’s beside the point – there are amazing places around Jasper(Maligne Lake for one), Banff is a bit too touristy for my taste and EXPENSIVE, and you’d better get to the Athabasca Glacier before it’s melted completely (we were there back in the mid-70’s and I swear the glacier was almost at the side of the road – it’s really retreated a lot in the intervening 35-odd years). » Posted By Mightywoof On September 2, 2010 @ 2:05 pm Wow!! Fires in Russia Fires in southern Africa » Posted By Mightywoof On August 12, 2010 @ 6:43 pm I was, a few years back when the Chretien liberal government signed the Kyoto Accord, quite optimistic that climate change could be, with diligence, intelligence and global co-operation, be slowly halted and eventually reversed. The Chretien government and the succeeding Martin government sat on their fat arses and did bugger all about anything ‘Kyotic’. Then the Harper Cons came into power and, at first, were climate change deniers – that went down like a lead ballon with most Canadians, so they kinda found religion but declared nothing could be done unless it was in lockstep with our great friend, neighbour and ally, the American Government – who at the time was Bush and the Republicans. I had greatr hope when Barack Obama was elected and the Congress and Senate was Democrat ……… but *sigh* – there’s been a lot on your legislative plate and still climate change hasn’t been addressed. I suspect, given the last 18+ months with the Party of No, that if any legislation is passed it will be totally and completely inadequate to the task and our own Conservative government will maybe pass some lip service legislation if we’re lucky. I am no longer optimistic about the survival of the human race – the planet will survive but I doubt there will be much left on it 100 years from now.
