First Senate Dems seem to be serious about getting healthcare reform passed using budget reconciliation. My older brother is a Vietnam vet and I see the toll it still takes on him and on our family. He still will not got to the VA for anything because of the resentment he holds with the military. Both my parents are Korean War vets and several uncles were WWII vets so those roots go deep. Personally I have been keeping a close eye on what the administration is doing for veterans after decades of neglect. I have been very pleased on this front because he and Shinseki are taking the lead and not shying away from the issue. I don’t know if the changes they are making in the VA will get down to this veteran anytime soon but it’s good to see real progress in that area. Even if it’s not mandated with small business, if small business employees get access to affordable healthcare coverage it narrows a huge competitive advantage corporations how now. The fact is the basic program in the Netherlands is a mostly a loss leader (subsidized by the government) for private healthcare insurance companies but they make modest profits on their supplemental plans. But really the for profit companies in the US are oligarchies where CEOs and corporate officers make 5-10X what they do in Europe and have much higher overhead costs than in Europe so they are not even close in comparison. I’m familiar with the Dutch healthcare system because of my research but he reiterated that the Dutch healthcare insurance industry was 100% private and it delivers low cost policies something like $200/individual and quality healthcare. The big difference in the US and in the Netherlands is they have dozens of private insurance competitors and fierce healthcare regulations where every insurer has to have a minimal plan that is really quite generous. One of the problems in this country is we just don’t have real capitalism in the sense of real competition in too many industrial sectors. So when that happens the only choice we have is to add competition to the market using something like a public plan for healthcare. Bottom line in this country we don’t have free market capitalism. The overall strategy is not bad because you mush have some industry groups on your side and I would much rather have the providers on your side rather than the private insurers but I though they could have got at least twice the concessions. While it was not practical to have negotiations in public we should hear more about the deal now. My only pet peeve about the issue is when people say the white house is not negotiating prices when they did negotiate prices they just want the deal to stand. Bush negotiated nothing with Medicare Plan B so this is far different. But healthcare insurance does not do a damn thing then take your money, pool it and pay out claims. There is nothing justifying profits at all for private insurance. National Defense, infrastructure, education etc all essential and can be supplied by government. Energy is and example of an essential product that cannot be supplied by government especially when we import energy. Most hospitals should be non-profit but not all. Drug companies and medical device suppliers should be for profit because they rely on innovation, but they should be banned from advertising. It should be between you and your doctor based on your diagnosis what drugs you need. They should not be pushing them with billions of dollars in ads.
