My favorite was the 60’s and 70’s MAD (Mutually Assued Destruction) describing the nuclear standoff between the US and Soviet Union now that is probably the most appropriate acronym ever. My least favorite acronym ever trying to minimize what is essential a group of child molesters was NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association). Yes it did really exist at one time. Of course the military loves acronyms the most. They make acronyms out of every weapons system, every procedure and just about everything else. My favorite recent one you may have heard about in the news is SERE (Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract) school. It’s infamous because it’s the same “training” the military uses to waterboard our own soldiers. Actually a good friend of mine who I hired out of the Army and who was an Army Ranger went through this training. He said the worst part was where they would put you in the cell for a few days and blast all kinds of disturbing sounds. He said the sound he could not stand the most was a constant loop of babies crying. Considering most receiving this training are young men and many have young families like my buddy who had 2 year old twins at the time you would think the Army would have known better. I was lucky to buy my townhome just about a year before I got sick the last time. People need to stop doing business with banks and use credit unions for all their loans. All the cars I have purchased new or used have been financed through credit unions. While I’ve always felt young at heart I’ve learned that you MUST behave as adult when making lives important decisions. The big thing you need to learn is the difference between a need and want. My newest car is 10 years old this year. Of course it only has a little over 66,000 miles so it’s young at hear as well. I never ever consider getting a second mortgage. My townhome is half the price my real estate agent wanted me to pay. He was voted into Congress the year I was born and died on my latest birthday. I just have not know life without his presence in Washington fighting for everything that I came to believe in as well. I come from a second generation Irish American family who had 13 bright red haired children. This is more like losing a favorite uncle that just losing another politician for me. Ted Kennedy was the youngest of 9 and my father is the sole surviving youngest of 13 and obviously this has hit him very hard as well. We the people now need to be the 100th Senator in Congress. We can never replace the will and compassion of Senator Kennedy but we can fight for what he believed in. We need to fight for healthcare reform of course but we must also fight to put this country back on track for what all the Kennedy’s stood for, fought for and died for. After universal healthcare reform, renewable energy is by far my biggest issue. The president is off to a great start with the stimulus and the budget in funding renewable energy. The climate and energy bill should focus more on solar and hydrogen than it does but that’s another key step in the process. I prefer solar and wind myself as stationary energy sources and hydrogen as a portable energy source. Though you should Google “JET plasma fusion” which is another intriguing energy source. That fits in well with the holistic Gaia theory of well that everything is tied to the environment. One thing I almost put on the list but has not been fully understood yet is the concept of directed evolution. I attended a seminar given by Novo Nordisk the wolds largest enzyme manufacturer about directed evolution and some of the possibilities were amazing. The one example I remember was research where they were trying to get a bacteria to be active in 10% of a toxic solvent, I may have been methylene chloride. Basically they would take a given concentration of solvent add these bacteria, take the “survivors” and then add them to a higher concentration of solvent. So each generation was tolerant to higher and higher concentrations of the solvent. The bacteria actually broke down the solvent to non-toxic metabolites to clean the byproducts of a particular fine chemical reaction. The did end up making a strain of bacteria that could work under those harsh condition. The scientist that gave the seminar said if direct evolution research works the way they think it could biotechnology could be used to produce every organic chemical in the next 50 years. He will have a good deal of independence from Holder too if the DOJ has really changed into what it should be. He also has experience with the CIA because he headed up the video tape investigation. I guess the good part of that is he’s probably learned from that but the bad news was that investigation went nowhere. The only example I can think of in recent history where an entire bill that Democrats but mostly Republicans worked on that got stricken down by the courts was the Line Item Veto Act of 1996.
