Texas GOP Say “NO” To Reinstating Sodomy Law Without Changing Their Minds

Thanks, Cynd. You make good points!

Cyn–I wish that rational folks like you didn’t get drowned out by all the tea party shouting and hysteria that goes on in the GOP. I know this happens on the left as well but it seems to be careening out of control on the right. This country would be a lot more functional if we stopped demonizing each other. It’s a democracy. We have to find a way to compromise and live together. Extremists on both sides are worse than counter-productive. They are rotting our democracy. I haven’t read all your posts, I’m sure, so maybe you’ve addressed this, but I’m curious to know what you think of Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the activities of the Koch Brothers.

Iraq And The Ghosts Of South Vietnam

Well said, Adlib. You really encapsulated a very complex and distressing issue, particularly in your description of the depraved Saddam and how we managed to be even worse for Iraq than him in the end.

I would add that when we do take military action, it should be of a completely different nature than what we used in the past, particularly with groups like ISIS and whatever those nutbags call themselves in Nigeria. We can’t throw aircraft carriers and bombers at such enemies. We can’t invade other nations. But, as you said, operations like the one that nailed Bin Laden are much smarter. Just think, they pulled it off without invading Pakistan!

“I Get Bergdahl- Been There.” Words From A Young Iraq/Afghan Vet

Hi Nirek, Thanks for the welcome but we’ve met actually. I’m just escribacat disguised as GreenChica now. (Found a “leak” in my anonymity so decided a new name was in order).

Very touching story, Murph. So sad. I suspect it repeats all across the country.

Obama 41% Approval Rating Proof Of The Public’s Lack Of Basic Current Events Knowledge

I remember that too, Kalima. I think his point was that our country is not a dictatorship. Obama can’t just sail in and start arresting the previous administration for war crimes or change the immigration laws. He has no choice but to work within the system. By definition, the presidency IS the system. By the way, I’m not really new — I’m just escribacat with a new name (due to security concerns).

Another thing President Obama has done is that he has improved the situation in this country. He inherited a bloody mess, he kept the economy from collapsing, he ended the recession. In broad strokes, he completely changed the canvas for LGBT and health care in this country. On the other hand, look at GWB’s legacy. He inherited a healthy economy, staged two invasions, one of them under false pretext, and left the economy in a bloody mess. Grinning all the way. Obama is president of a country where a huge number of people consider themselves conservative and another huge number don’t have a clue what’s going on, except what the latest incendiary headline told them. It’s a miracle he got anything done at all.

“At Last!”: How HP Continues to Cultivate Cynicism

Huffytoons doesn’t care about progress and Arianna is not a progressive. That website is a business and they want to make money. If sideboobs makes more money, then there will be sideboobs.

Congress Does the Limbo

Seems to me the whole gerrymandering mischief represents the GOP’s death rattle. They can put someone in the House with their jigsaw puzzle districting but the presidency seems beyond their reach. I expect their tactics to get even dirtier in the near future. We’ll see more GOP “operatives” like James OKeefe posing as a pimp to catch some liberal in a lie. Their descent is not and will not be pretty. I wouldn’t put it past them to manufacture a crisis overseas. That tends to frighten Americans enough to put a warmonger in the White House.

Who Saved the Cuyahoga River?

That’s right around the time that the Christian right started taking over the GOP.

I wonder what happened to the GOPer brain between then and now that made them decide that responsible environmental stewardship is anti-American.

Baghdad, Blowback and Bush

One wonders why certain people have to resort to twisting facts and lying outright to support their positions. Perhaps it’s because their positions are actually nonsupportable. If they had valid arguments in support of their views, they would use them, wouldn’t they?

Yorkie, that is a very good question. Seems like those goons in Nigeria also have access to money.

Inhofe is an embarrassment. I’d like to declare to the world at large that this buffoon does not speak for me! He makes all Americans look like idiots.

I agree, Sabreen. Since Day One, they have treated Obama with disrespect. They are a disgrace.

Poor old GOPers. This is a true act of desperation. Pretty soon they’ll be trotting out Reagan’s…..

The ideal of free speech comes at a cost. It means we have to allow morons like the Westboro Baptist Church to spout their hate speech. I’ve had moments where I wouldn’t mind smacking those people around a bit. But when I have violent impulses, I don’t act on them.

I really don’t see much room for an intellectual or political evaluation of what happened in Paris. In other words, I don’t think these murderers deserve for us to give that to them. I’m not even convinced these aren’t just a bunch of disgruntled psychotics using religion as an excuse to act out their personal grievances against a world that dealt them the short end of the stick. I realize each of these people believes that he or she is some sort of religious martyr or hero, but I think it must have taken some impressive mental gymnastics for them to convince themselves of it. Or perhaps programming on the part of a stronger personality onto someone with a weak character.

I don’t think it matters what the newspaper printed or didn’t print. These killers murdered people in the grocery store too. They are out to murder — they really don’t care whom. If you look at all the other numerous episodes of extremist Muslims murdering people, a high percentage of their victims are, in fact, fellow Muslims. They don’t really show much deliberation in their choice of targets, except that they are generally unarmed and defenseless. What offensive thing did the people in the shopping mall in Nairobi do to Muslims?

Hey Kilgore, it’s good to see you. I’ve only been around just about enough to notice that you were absent! e-cat.

The US Navy has been trying to sneak this in without public comment. They want to conduct military exercises here on the Olympic Peninsula involving electromagnetic radiation equipment. They claim it won’t harm humans and large animals though they don’t provide any proof and they admit it has risks. They obviously don’t care about small animals and birds.

Miles, what do you mean “what happened here on the Planet?” Some folks disagreed with your definition of “racism” vs “prejudice,” “bigotry.” Your comments here seem to imply that this disagreement over word definitions means those folks are racist themselves. I hope that is not what you intended but that’s the tone of your comments, which I find quite antagonistic. You seem to be looking for a fight. Maybe you haven’t been around here very long but I can assure, this is not a home for racists or bigots.

The other pressing issue, besides Benghazi, is that Obama used the word “football” instead of “soccer.” Oh, and he likes that sport. It’s sinister, really.

Hi Smot, I really feel for you and your story about the brother. Like you and Pink, I also have a brother who thinks the rest of us are responsible for taking care of him (even though he’s pushing 60 now and should have become an adult somewhere along the line).

I was the last person in the family who still felt bad for him — up until last year when I found out he owed his landlord $10K in back rent and had been lying to him. He’s been tossed out of just about every place he’s ever lived. He’s a con artist who really knows how to play helpless. I’ve taken him in so many times over the years and had to boot him out each time or he’d just stay forever without a second thought. I realized it doesn’t matter how much I give him — it’s never enough. He always needs more. Always. And he doesn’t mind lying to get it.

Like your mom, my mother was also one of his primary sources of money. She spent her final years worrying about him and giving him cash. Reading her check book after her death was an eye opener and exercise in frustration. He really worked her.

I was well on my way to becoming his next “worrying parent” when I had my realization about him. It’s been really difficult and painful. He’s one of the reasons I recently moved to a different state. I’m sad to say I’ve given up on him finally after decades of this. I can’t fix him.
