My brother-in-law is a doctor and lives in a very expensive home but he can’t quit working to keep up his lavish lifestyle when you’ve got a Jaguar and a Mercedes in your driveway. I hear you girl! My husband was a job changer and a drinker and when he wanted to move again and start over at age 50 I just said no. I never knew life could be so free of drama and I’ve never been more at peace. It’s not the life I thought I’d have but it’s the one I’ve got. I went back to my hometown to care for my mother for three years and worked at the hospital because there’s no where else to work! I’m talking under 20K with one high school and no matter how long you’ve been gone people remember you. What you do have is a class structure but you’ve all been mixing it up since elementary school so the boundaries are blurred. You don’t see the lines as divided as you do in the city. The elderly have some lovely assisted living facilities that are expensive but they have intellectual stimulation, a variety of activities and a real sense of community. It seems that perhaps that model – a central living and dining area with private bedrooms in some sort of communal facility could be something in the future. It would certainly seem cheaper than individual homes. Also, I lived in northern Indiana around the Amish which live very much like our original settlers. The don’t believe in electricity or cars because they want to live a simple life. The usually pay cash for their farms, they don’t believe in insurance but go to the hospital and refuse government handouts. They will make payments. The first thing settlers did was to build a church and school and that is the center of the Amish community. If a barn burns – the neighbors pitch in and rebuild it! The sense of community is amazing. My sons played their high school in basketball and every winter they would ride their horse and buggies to the games and their huge, strong farm boys would kick their ass. They were the best sports – really lovely people. But I’m older (more hippie than yuppie – perhaps that’s why that is a negative connotation) and I’ve decided to take what I want from religion and leave what I want behind. As you age you realize you can’t solve or resolve all these issues so you do the best you can to live with yourself and realize you aren’t responsible for everything bad ever done in the name of religion because it wasn’t done by god but by some man. And most movements and good deeds have had religious people behind them. So my conclusion is that people are by and large GOOD and when you meet an evil person there is something lacking in them (good). Your description of Sybil is spot on because what does a child have to fight evil with? Nothing but their soul – so they protect it – poor lambs. I doubt any amount of love can heal that soul, I don’t know. I hope this makes some sense but I try to look at the good people are doing – certainly not saying we don’t have a long way to go and yes people are very resistant to any change.
