With the recent passing of one of Jazz’s pioneers, the great Dave Brubeck, this week’s music thread is about Jazz. Any form of Jazz, from traditional to modern, from Jazz vocalists to Jazz piano, sax, trumpet or bass. Pick your personal favorites from jazz combos, to big band Jazz, to Bebop, soloists, mellow Jazz or Jazz that just commands your feet to start tapping. Oh hell, why not throw in some Jazz fusion as well.
So pick the tunes that move you the most. Have great fun doing so and listening to the picks of others. There is a whole lot of Jazz to choose from.

Had to squeeze one more in.

The Great Lady Day and Lester Young. Fine and mellow indeed.
KQ, this one is for you. And, I know KT will like it, too!
I love it Sally. This is from a wonderful comedy called “Ball Of Fire.” Gary Cooper is a nerdy language professor who is writing a dictionary of slang. He meets Barbara Stanwyck who plays a real “ball of fire.” Funny movie.
Yes, I know and it is one of KQ’s favorite movies. That is why I said it was for him. And, I knew you must like it, too. It was a movie at the time that was suppose to be an updated version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Did you know that? Kinda cute when you think of it, huh?
Sally, I did not know that. I wonder how that was supposed to work.

With the great Jaco Pastorius on bass.
I used to listen to jazz quite a bit years ago, usually without knowing the artist or groups name, it was just on… Two artists I did like, and even knew the name of one of them, and that was Jean-Luc Ponty, even went to see him live. Very nice concert! Difficult to pick one song, but this one may “typify his sound’ along with always stellar group.
JEAN-LUC PONTY “Rhythms of hope”
Another jazz “sound” I go into was one with a mix of Afro/Brazilian/ Cuban/ Caribe/fusion jazz.
A sampling perhaps?

Ah, and a little “slipper jazz’ some smooth “Brazilian Jazz”

Some nice picks bito. I especially like the Latin fusion ones. Good stuff.

Misty – Ella Fitzgerald
Nice Ad. The Great Ella Fitzgerald. There are a lot of good trumpet players out there, but Louis Armstrong is still the best, IMO. He had such power and control of the instrument.
Another one from half of Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, which may be the only song that literally mentions and gives a tribute to Dave Brubeck in its lyrics. And as it’s titled “New Frontier”, really represents what Brubeck represented:
“I hear you’re mad about Brubeck,
like your eyes and like him too.
He’s an artist, a pioneer,
we’ve got to have some music on the New Frontier.”
New Frontier – Donald Fagen
Killgore, just wanted to thank you for this ideal theme and tribute to Dave Brubeck.

Rhapsody in Blue – George Gershwin
My pleasure Ad. I remember listening to Rhapsody In Blue, when I just a child. It fascinated me. My folks had the old 78 records. I think my mom still has them.

Very nice Latin oriented Jazz.
This young lady is an extraordinary Jazz bassist. I think she was twenty years old when she did this;

So What by.Miles Davis
All excellent choices Kalima. The album, “Kind of Blue,” is truly a masterpiece. Real creative genius IMO!
Hi Kt, I agree. The problem is that I have too many favorites, hard to decide on just a few every time. Some of them are not on youtube, and I wonder how much longer some others will stay up. I put a Brubeck “Take Five” from 64′ on MB, it’s gone because someone took it down on youtube. This is happening more and more these days. Sad really that some people spoil it for others.
I know what you mean. There is so much great music out there that is Jazz, or in some way, derived from Jazz.
The other problem with me is that when I want to post a tune that’s in my head, I forget the titles. 🙁 It’s no fun growing older.
Kalima, I’m replying here because it seems the best place to respond.
I still want to learn piano. Far too late for classical, but to be able to play Jazz piano would be great.
I don’t think it’s ever too late to learn KT. I have a favourite British author who started writing her first best sellers when she was in her 70’s, and many people who take up painting for the first time in that age frame too. So I think that as long as we are breathing, the opportunity to learn stays with us.
When I got my first computer in 2007, I never thought I would ever get past learning how to send emails, but in a few months I could do a lot of things, even though I’ll never be a computer whiz, I can do more than I ever thought I could. So go for it.
So very true. My short term memory is so bad, that often times, when I’m replying to a post, I forget the person’s name and have to scroll up to check, after just reading it. 😯
😆 I forget names too, but remember faces. When I’m watching a film and can’t remember an actor’s name, I can’t sleep until I remember, and going to Google is cheating. 😉
So I find myself waking up in the middle of the night remembering, satisfied I haven’t lost it, I go back to sleep. I think I need therapy. 😯
This is a great video too, Miles is so young. They both are.
It’s so great that this was captured on film. I hope it is rightly preserved for history’s sake.
I played trumpet in the high school band, and it’s really interesting to see how Mile’s fingers work those wonderful notes.
This is another great Jazz trumpeter AND singer, that I really like.
Great trumpet KT, I didn’t know he sang too. Thanks for the video.
I played the flute and the piano, but my hands were too small to master the piano well, much to my grandmother’s chagrin. 🙁
