With the recent passing of one of Jazz’s pioneers, the great Dave Brubeck, this week’s music thread is about Jazz. Any form of Jazz, from traditional to modern, from Jazz vocalists to Jazz piano, sax, trumpet or bass. Pick your personal favorites from jazz combos, to big band Jazz, to Bebop, soloists, mellow Jazz or Jazz that just commands your feet to start tapping. Oh hell, why not throw in some Jazz fusion as well.

So pick the tunes that move you the most. Have great fun doing so and listening to the picks of others. There is a whole lot of Jazz to choose from.

I used to listen to jazz quite a bit years ago, usually without knowing the artist or groups name, it was just on… Two artists I did like, and even knew the name of one of them, and that was Jean-Luc Ponty, even went to see him live. Very nice concert! Difficult to pick one song, but this one may “typify his sound’ along with always stellar group.

JEAN-LUC PONTY “Rhythms of hope”

Another jazz “sound” I go into was one with a mix of Afro/Brazilian/ Cuban/ Caribe/fusion jazz.

A sampling perhaps?

Ah, and a little “slipper jazz’ some smooth “Brazilian Jazz”

Another one from half of Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, which may be the only song that literally mentions and gives a tribute to Dave Brubeck in its lyrics. And as it’s titled “New Frontier”, really represents what Brubeck represented:

“I hear you’re mad about Brubeck,
like your eyes and like him too.
He’s an artist, a pioneer,
we’ve got to have some music on the New Frontier.”
