I Believe in God But I Hate Religion

Twilson – I understand your feelings, I questioned the existence of God for years and how many play on fears to bring the flock under control. I despised organized religion. Then in 2016, I did something I never thought I would do, I converted from no religion to Catholicism. How is that for a big decision? But the decision was made after talking with a parish priest and the people who taught the conversion classes. The process is not an “alter call” and now you are a paying member of the church, but rather a 10 month course, where they teach you and let you make the final decision. Never once did I feel pressured to convert, just earnest people who do believe in passing on their knowledge. There are denominations out there that I definitely do not believe in and there are others that I think fulfill the promise of a true Christian walk, or at least have members that do the true Christian walk – President Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn come to mind- the walk of kindness and caring for your neighbor, doing good works etc. I do know that attending Mass gives me a feeling of peace and I like being in a Parish where the Priest teaches love and good works in his homilies, not politics. In fact I have been to a few different parishes and have found the same thing. When they end a service with, Peace Be With You, they really mean it. There are some issues that I disagree with in the church, but there is usually things people don’t agree with, we are not robots, after all.

Weekend Music Thread – Father and Son

This was back in 2012 from my post: https://planetpov.com/2012/07/09/figuring-out-the-far-right-republicans/

» Posted By SueInCa On June 25, 2022 @ 9:32 pm

Let me see if I can attach it, I made a screen shot. Could get the screen shot to post so I copied and will paste here. It was in response to a sign the GOP had, We Came Unarmed this time:
This is what really gets me. These yokels actually believe they could win an armed insurrection against the federal government. When you remind them of the incredible fire power of the US military, they never fail to assume that those in the military would join them in their “fight.” It’s almost laughable if it weren’t so disgusting to think of.

Adlib – I did not see an OT post so I am putting this comment here. Is KT still around the site? I ran across a comment he made in 2012 that he might be surprised to remember he said. Nothing bad, just a comment about the right wing

A Thoughtful Note to Democratic Voters: Calm the Fuck Down

What a glorious day that will be, seeing the avalanche of things going against him.

» Posted By SueInCa On February 24, 2020 @ 5:23 pm

If I go by the Jill Stein voters in 2016, I believe some of them will. It was so very obvious she was a schill for RT and people still voted for her. There was no reason on earth she should have been sitting at Putin’s table with Mike Flynn, but they made up every excuse in the world for her. Even Dems fell for her “recount” bullshit and gave money to her which she never did send to any charity like she promised. Incredible that people fell for her, but I would guess it can happen again. I don’t generally unfriend people on FB but election night I saw one of her people say they were going to sit back and laugh at all the people who would not get universal healthcare now. That person had a good friend who was battling cancer at the time and she knew the hardships they were facing, but thought it appropriate to make that comment. I unfriended her immediately.

A second term would descend us into an oppressive autocracy, that should be the sole issue for all Dems in the GE.
Adlib, that is my bottom line, as well. I just really do have a hard time understanding how people who you think are fairly bright, fall for the propaganda. Part of it is just plain laziness. The number of people who can expound on an article where they only read the headine and tag line is amazing. And many are not even ashamed to admit it 🙂 I do like the Elizabeth Warren that showed up to the debate last Wednesday, but I just don’t see that from her all the time. Still, I would be happy to cast a vote for her in the general. I also see Bernie supporter’s shortcomings as well. This whole business of only voting if your candidate wins is what helped to elect trump. What is that they say, keep doing the same thing and expect something different is a fool’s game, some still have not learned that lesson.

» Posted By SueInCa On February 24, 2020 @ 12:38 pm

Yes, I don’t get angry or panic, I just respond with facts and the truth as I know it. It is a sustained propaganda approach that is causing some of the panic and division, as well. Still, I stopped being angry about it and calmly state the truth. Now that is not to say I can’t get my angry on, lol, but for a legitimate reason, not this primary bullshit going on. Full disclosure, our entire household did vote for Bernie, but I will vote blue, no matter who.

Mitch McConnell, The Gravedigger Of American Democracy

Thank you for your truth, because that is what it is. FYI, I could be even more aggressive than you were here. If I told you, you might not like me anymore lol

The Cynical Charade of “Pro-Life” Politicians

Bingo, like we should be embarrassed at our depth of knowledge. When did knowledge lose it’s importance? How sad that people are like that.

» Posted By SueInCa On May 29, 2019 @ 8:39 pm

Yes and I have heard some say, oh you are so political, like it is a dirty word lol. If being involved in the process or caring what happens makes me political, well I proudly claim the title. I also think, like was the case with me, they feel they don’t know anything so how can they comment? I learned the answer to that one real fast.

» Posted By SueInCa On May 29, 2019 @ 3:10 pm

That is so true, Adlib. I am amazed at the number of ignorant people out there. Also the people who look at you funny when you mention some new atrocity the Republicans have dished out and say, “oh they can’t do that”. No? Well they just did.

» Posted By SueInCa On May 29, 2019 @ 12:03 pm

I totally agree on your points about Dominionists and it is frustrating that people still cannot see these people spread out all across government right now. I keep thinking about the book I read about how things changed with people like them in government and I think we might know with the 2020 election. Even if other takeovers are not religious-type coups, they think alike and will persecute anyone who disagrees with them. I also saw an interview with Angela Merkel where she talked about the rise in extremism in Europe. We also see it in South America. They are not all Dominionists but their ideas meld with Dominionists especially when it comes to people who disagree or are not “like them”.

It sounds mixed up because it is. We have a mixture of evil people asserting their dominance in countries all around the world.

» Posted By SueInCa On May 29, 2019 @ 10:04 am

Adlib
I agree, they were all factors, but the one that really gets me is the people who passed on the fake news and then either did not vote, or only voted for a 3rd candidate out of spite. I actually saw supposed Democrats passing along information that Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the Kennedy assassination, based on a story in a gossip rag from one of Trump’s allies, then him making reference to it in a speech. WTH? It has always bothered me that people who bitch the most, don’t get out and vote. 2018 was my kind of election, where you saw people obviously out voting, but I wonder why it has to come to a crisis to motivate people.

Hey, long time no hear from, good to see you here!

» Posted By SueInCa On May 29, 2019 @ 9:34 am

Good piece for discussion. While I agree this is mainly about power, since any Republican would run their mistresses to an abortion doctor as soon as the line turned in to a plus sign, it is also about overturning Roe v. Wade. Elections have consequences and all those people who thought Hillary was just not good enough, have only themselves to blame for what is now going on. The very same people who call Republicans corp pigs are the same people who helped to make it all possible. They could not see the big picture or just plain did not care and took their toys home. I lost respect for a lot of people in 2016.

For the Planet’s Transgender Columnist: A First Post

Rebecca is Reid’s old name, so she is going to be a boy so would that be considered a transgender male? Another new term we need to learn. His mother is doing really well, but she is on a daily basis with him, we are morel weekly or bi-weekly.

» Posted By SueInCa On May 31, 2019 @ 9:20 am

Hi Angela
Welcome to the Planet. You will find I have a similar sense of humor as you do so my guess is you won’t be able to shock me. I am glad you are here as we are going through the, for lack of a better word, awakening, of my niece. We are getting used to calling her Reid, but referring to the gender she does is is a bit harder. I think only because he has been a she to us for 16 years. Anyway, prior to this awakening, Reid was having so many psychological issues that at several points she wanted to kill herself. I had some truly heartbreaking times picking her up from school when she had breakdowns. My SIL got her the counseling she needed, but it still was not enough for her to come out until a breakdown at school one day. We are so thankful the counselor she talked to was very experienced in transgender issues and was able to steer my SIL in the right direction to help her and her medical coverage will cover it all for free. I don’t know if I am using all the right lingo here, but I have had a real education on the process over the past month or so. I always thought I was such an open and affirming person but I did have a slight, WTF moment before I asked what we could do to help but I still feel bad about that moment. It was such a shock to me because her parents are/were both good Baptists, and how would they accept her? What would she have to go through? Well, I learned that love of your child overrides any organized religion with her mother, the jury is till out on her father. For that, I am happy. This was probably TMI for your first post, but I was so happy to see your post. I will shut up now.

Exciting news, for both of you. I think I have an old email address on file but I looked at how to change it and don’t see anything. I will look again.

Missouri Joins The Club: Legislature Passes Very Restrictive Abortion Bill

Murph, how do you feel about the death penalty? I find it very troublesome when most of these people are for the death penalty and war hawks. They are not pro-life, they are anti-abortion. If people think it is not ok to kill a baby, how do they justify war or the death penalty? No government should be inside my bedroom making my decisions. Personally, I never saw the need to make that choice, but that does not give me the right to make the decision for other women. Quite honestly, what if we pass a law that men have to be sterilized after the first child they leave for the mother to raise alone? I know the men passing these laws certainly don’t think it ok.
