Time Out for O/T – Vol. 2

I watched the news – I guess he’s not running, but ABC seems to want to rehabilitate his image.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 9:12 pm

I heard a rumor on ABC nightline preview that Lou Dobbs might consider running for President in 2012. I hope it’s just a rumor. I will stay tuned for the details.

Time Out for OT – Vol 6

I’ve noticed the same thing about Ratigan. For the past several days, he seems to want to form an alliance with the TeaParty crowd – but needs to publicly distance himself from the racist element in order to attack the Democrats and the Obama administration. He seems to be unduly angry and keeps bringing up the “our government is corporatist” meme repeatedly – perhaps every 5-10 minutes throughout his show. He pretends to go after both Republicans and Democrats equally, but it’s becoming increasingly clear on whose side he is, and he’s now getting defensive about it. He was sweating bullets on his show this afternoon – something’s not right with that scenario.

Excellent escribacat. I have signed up and will be making calls to my senators on the 24th!

Will anyone watch the summit on C-SPAN?

Time Out for OT – Vol 3

Seriously, just when you think they couldn’t get any worse…I was just on HP because a particular article on HCR caught my eye. It is written by Sam Stein and claims that Senator Sherrod Brown told HuffPo that Obama’s engagement in the health care reform has “dried up” since the MA elections. To use the exact quote from the article:

“The president was weighing in pretty heavily on the discussions between the House and Senate before the Massachusetts special [Senate] election,” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) told Huffington Post. “It’s dried up since.””

This is the second paragraph from the article. The first paragraph in the article seems to partly contradict the second paragraph by implying that the President was never engaged (of course, neither of which put the President in a good light):

“Despite urging Democratic senators on Wednesday to forge ahead on health care reform, President Obama and his aides have been largely hands-off in guiding the legislative process, Senate aides tell the Huffington Post. And on Thursday a leading Senate progressive called out the White House publicly for abandoning the leadership role that is needed to get legislation passed.”

Interestingly, and I’m not sure whether HP is aware or they are simply so caught up with their agenda that they don’t care, the same senator Brown, can be seen on the Rachel Maddow Show just last night, saying the exact opposite, of what the article claims he said about President.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#35227051

Of course the resident trolls are on board shouting their usual talking points about HCR being dead,Obama not leadling, and Obama making deals with pharma, etc…but not one of them responded when I pointed out the contradiction and provided the link showing Brown on the Rachel Maddow Show.

http://www.c-spanvideo.org/schedule?zoom=0&timezone=Eastern&date=Feb+3%2C+2010

I just checked on CSPAN and it appears to have been just inserted on their schedule for tomorrow. Live from 10:00-10:30AM on C-SPAN2. I’m just not sure that 1/2 hour will be adequate…

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 2, 2010 @ 5:24 pm

Has anyone heard that Obama will be holding a live Q & A session with the Democratic caucus sometime tomorrow morning? I just saw it on HP, so I’m going to check out whether it’s true.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 2, 2010 @ 1:31 pm

HP changed it’s main to now pretend that Obama took their advice about moving to community banks. That was NOT AH’s original idea.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 2, 2010 @ 10:33 am

Simon Johnson sourcing from some website baselinescenario.com, but pushing a Republican “Tom Hoenig” as a possible replacement. Note that neither Tom, nor the WH has said ANYTHING about him replaceing Tim Geitner, yet HP is plugging him “according to Simon Johnson” for Geitner’s spot.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 2, 2010 @ 8:09 am

Oh oh – HP has another screaming headline about the possibility of Geitner being replaced, of course based on unsubstantiated rumor and speculation. That woman has an unhealthy obsession with certain members of Obama’s cabinet.

Elena Kagan Nominated to the SCOTUS

e’cat I meant to reply to your post and I accidentally hit “report this comment.” So sorry and I hope I didn’t cause any problems!

Anyway, I agree with you..between Cenk, Hamsher, Greenwald, etc., these constant tantrum episodes are getting tiresome…

Rashomon 9: Ten Views of Ben Nelson’s Opposition to Obama’s Labor Board Nominee

Cher, I see where you’re coming from but I think the comments Obama made are consistent with his previous comments on the issues of banks, corporations and wealth. Obama has always maintained that he is not out to punish the banks or corporations because they have been the foundation of our economy for centuries. Even with the health care reform debate, he stated that his intention was not to put the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies out of business because they help to stimulate the economy by providing jobs to “regular” people. However, he believes that corporations/banks should be regulated so that the compensation system proportionately reflects the merits and input of the ALL the workers, shareholders and the profits made by the company. I don’t think this is anti-populist in anyway.

Obama strikes me as someone who does not allow ideological bents to restrict his ability to consider something that may suggest a different bent if that solution proves to be more feasible or effective.
And based on what I saw from the interview excerpt, Obama did NOT say that he thought the bonuses were reasonable.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 10, 2010 @ 4:11 pm

Why do you think it’s stupid politics? Because Obama said he “knew both guys?”
Also, we still do not have the transcript of the entire interview. Even the article’s author conceded that he did not have the whole interview and was basing his remarks on partial information.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 10, 2010 @ 9:57 am

The BS anti-Obama articles tend to be the most heavily moderated. They want to screen out the comments which correct the misinformation and lies they peddle with those articles.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On February 10, 2010 @ 9:08 am

Just take a look at HP’s current headline and the accompanying picture of the President. Someone’s personal issues with Obama is becoming more and more obvious.

State of the Union Address – Live Blog

Yes I saw that ridiculous headline. I also saw AH running her mouth on Larry King last night. Of course, her intellectually lazy critique was so predictable I changed the channel 5 seconds later.

SNL is going to have a field day with this staged diversity behind GOP speaker.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 27, 2010 @ 7:37 pm

Thank you President Obama! He called out the obstructionists – they know who they are!!

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 27, 2010 @ 7:01 pm

What would you like to hear in the State of the Union?

1. I would like to hear OBama talk about (in no particular order)

a. Jobs/Economy and clarifying what the “spending freeze” entails.
b. Health care reform – what the bill contains, where they’re at currently and what will the end result look like, and when we can expect a signed bill.
c. The status of DADT/DOMA in congress and in the pentagon.

2. My dream phrase would be “I never said that any of this would be easy, but we are making progress and we will get there.”

3. I expect to hear a refresher of what has been done so far and why it was necessary to do it, and a broad overview of Obama’s goals for the coming year.

4. This is tough. I think I’ll be both. I expect to be disappointed about not getting enough specifics (too many broad outlines, but not enough details), but I expect to be encouraged because President Obama has a way of putting things in perspective, presenting the bigger picture and appealing to more rational side of my brain.

By the way, is anyone planning to watch the Republican response by VA Gov McDonnell?

Rashomon 6: Ten views of Obama’s budget freeze

True.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 4:27 pm

I don’t know. They did not state where exactly it came from. I will be watching what Obama says tomorrow.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/01/26/putting-hatchets-vs-scapels-debate-about-budget-freeze-ice

Speaking of hatchet vs scalpel, this is a statement put out by Jared Bernstein today.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 4:25 pm

According to ABC news, these areas will not be affected by Obama’s spending freeze

1. Social Security
2. Medicare
3.Homeland Security
4. Veteran’s Administration
5. Defense

These areas will be affected

1. Air traffic control
2. National Parks
3. Farm Subsidies
4. Education
5. More..

It remains to be seen exactly how these areas will be affected.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 3:44 pm

I was thinking the same thing.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 1:48 pm

I don’t see this criticism by candidate Obama as contradicting President Obama’s proposed “spending ‘freeze’ of 2011.” Do you?

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 1:22 pm

The video seems very consistent with what Jared Bernstein talked about on Rachel Maddow. Funding will be cut for some programs but increased for others, with a net decrease in overall spending.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 1:17 pm

I think Obama needs to get his message out personally and directly to the public. He has allowed the media to distort his entire purpose and agenda by undermining his credibility with these constant streams of rumors from the WH, leaks, annonymous speakers, etc..Unlike George Bush, Obama does not have the MSM as his mouthpiece. They won’t protect him and cover for him. Even his so-called base is willing to throw him under the bus for their peceived betrayal by him. When you have democratic senators coming on cable shows and bashing the president, I have to wonder.

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 10:32 am

Nellie I think you’re right. I do believe that Rachel is honest – I recalled her “are you kidding me?” reaction to Chris Matthews when he made the far-fetched claim that the MA voters were concerned about “debt” and gov’t spending which is why they voted for Scott Brown. Well I think the WH should invite the commentators like Rachel Maddow who still have a shred of integrity left to one of their meetings, like Jared said. If she’s on board with what they’re doing and can project confidence on her show, then that would do a lot to allieviate some of the anxiety among progressives.

But I do recall Obama specifically stating that he would comb through the budget and cut spending on programs that have been receiving money but are redundant. The Medicare program he mentioned is a supplemental program that subsides the insurance companies, but does not actually benefit the people on that program. The media and much of the public are confused on that – so it’s really up to Obama and the WH to clarify what exactly they are going to cut spending on.

Thanks escribacat for posting this! So how are the teabaggers going to respond to this latest development? Are they going to rally and say they are tired of government freezes?

Has Obama has effectively silenced the teabag noise machine by removing one of their primary trump cards? He has spoken forcefully against the supreme court ruling and vowed to challenge them, he has increased spending for working/middle-class families and proposed to decrease spending in other areas. So what are the teabaggers going to complain about? Geitner? Bernanke? Well I think that’s AH’s domain!!

» Posted By Gretel1or2 On January 26, 2010 @ 6:08 am

I watched the segment with Jared Bernstein and Rachel Maddow last night and I understood exactly was he was saying. I love Rachel and think she’s usually on point even in her criticisms of Obama, but last night I just couldn’t help but feel that she had already made up her mind and was trying to save face by pretending not to understand what Jared was saying. I find it hard to believe that Rachel did not get the concept, especially when Obama himself campaigned on this very idea – this is nothing new. During the debates he talked about going through the budget “line by line” and using a scalpel. John McCain had also proposed freezes but not in the discriminating way that Obama is now proposing.

On the other hand,(just my wild speculation) the media might be trying a strategy to create confusion among the public just so that people will tune in to Obama’s SOTU address to clarify the rumors they’ve heard. The MSM seems to thrive on controversy. If people are too content and know everything, then they won’t be motivated to watch the speech on Wednesday.
