Morning Blog

Nice round-up, Kalima.

Sarkozy’s political death-throes are becoming more desperate, though I doubt anything could top the absurdity of the Halal scandal a while back. 🙄

As an Irish person, my European political hopes are essentially pinned on Hollande, as he actually seems to have a clear understanding of the situation and actually appears to care about such things. On principal even! 😯

As to your quiz question, I can think of a few who might have invented the cocktail, but I’ll narrow it down to Hunter S. Thompson or Ernest Hemmingway. As it’s just a coin toss between them for me on this, I’ll actually flip a coin:

Heads for Hemmingway, tails for Thompson.

Heads!

The Tao and I

I stumbled across the Tao Te Ching a couple of months ago, during an impromptu visit to a book market. The book itself only cost a few euro, so I decided to buy it, partially so I could figure out how to pronounce the title. 🙄

As I read the book, a lot of the ideas seemed familiar to me. I think, largely due to my cursory understanding of ancient Hellenistic philosophies – Roman History is kinda my thing at the moment – and my love of Japanese anime. An odd combination. However, a great many of the ideas were entirely new to me. Some were entirely welcome, others not so.

I may not have been affected by its ideas as you were, KT, but, even so, the Tao Te Ching was a fantastic read.

Huffington Post Openly Launches Campaign to Attack Obama

Huffington is a fair-weather fiend. If the US once again gets swept up in Obama fever and the President is re-elected, expect her tone to change to match. Then, watch her slowly revert to her usual diet of bile.

A Psychiatrist’s Perspective on Obama: “His work is not done. Our need is still real.”

That there were no social safety nets is a very important point, KT. I believe that humans are inherently altruistic. Even if a statistically small number of a aberrations exist, the vast majority of people harbour not only ill will to others, but will actively seek to help them. Unfortunately, a great number of factors dampen the effects of this nature. Many are environmental, but most are of our own making, due to our own ignorance.

It is an unfortunate fact that when the number of people a human being knows exceeds the range 100-150, it is physically more difficult for that person to actually care about those extra people. This is why creations such as social security in the US and the Welfare State in the UK are so marvelous. They bypass this limitation and extend basic altruism to a vast number of people. These systems are not near perfect, but their very existence points to my earlier stated belief that most people are fundamentally altruistic.

Any attempts to destroy – specifically those to wreck, not ill-fated attempts to improve upon – can be explained by only two things:

Greed, or active malevolence.

Hey, MTS!

“It turned out not to be so. We have certainly experienced an increase in cases of clinical and situational depression, but that increase has been less than ten percent. This has been the experience across the country. Why?

I want to suggest that Barack Obama and the ‘Spirit of Hoped-For Change’ is the key.”

Your Psychiatrist acquaintance puts forward a very interesting hypothesis. While it is possible that the President’s promotion of the theme of hope has something to do with the less than expected increase in suicide, there are multiple other factors at play that likely have a larger effect. Such as:

i.) The Great Depression was far worse than the “Great Recession”, which accounts for a higher rate of suicide as a result of the former.

ii.) Medical facilities, especially those psychological in nature, are, while not perfect, far better now than they were during the time of the Great Depression, which could account for a lesser rate of suicide today.

iii.) People are more likely to become active, even in small ways, in politics nowadays, which leaves them less isolated and less likely to contemplate suicide out of desperation, even if their situation is terrible. The internet certainly would be a underlying element of this factor.

There are many more factors besides those above that could be listed, all of which could play their part in this reduced rate of suicide or very few of which could play a role. However, it is very unlikely that there is only one factor behind this effect and if the President’s message plays a role, then it is probably part of a much larger cast.

I would love to see a good study done on this and hope that psychiatrist friend’s research goes smoothly and well.

» Posted By Caru On January 10, 2012 @ 2:09 pm

You may be right, but I’d say that it’s just as likely that the media, in general, will follow him around as if were in heat. No doubt the usual Republican suspects will pop up to create some non-issue, which the media will ask Romney his opinion of.

Free to Assemble- Not in Indiana; A GOP Tactic at Work

I haven’t been able to find the square footage of the building, but considering the sheer size of the building, as shown below, I think that the 3000 number is a low-ball estimate as to how many people the building can safely hold.

Also, what about the grounds of the building? Are they limiting the number of people who can gather there too?

VOTE NOW: The Biggest Political F#%! Up of 2011

Most of these are different kinds of fuck-ups, so it’s difficult to choose between them. However, since you specified political fuck-ups I’ll pick those that had the most negative political impact on those involved.

1.) It was inevitable that the Tyrants of Arabia would be at the top of this list. Their monumental cruelty and stupidity is what has led to their undoing. Obviously, none of them ever read the Evil Overlord List.

2.) Governor Walker’s anti-union rampage has to be on this list. Not only has it negatively impacted his political career – recall, anybody? – but it has damaged the conservative anti-union movement by galvanising the public against them.

3.) I dislike putting Anthony Weiner’s rather ridiculous sexting scandal so high on this list, but it cannot be denied that it had an immediate political impact. Namely, by destroying his mainstream political career. I haven’t heard of him since the scandal except as the butt of jokes.

4.) Rick Perry forgetting which agencies he would abolish put the final nail in the coffin that was his campaign. One could say that the entire GOP race is just a competition to see which vampire makes it out of the funeral parlour.

5.) Though Michele Bachmann never really had a chance in the race for the GOP nomination, her singular inability to not make things up firmly put her out of the running.

P.S. An dishonourable mention must go the the GOP’s stance on payroll tax cuts, just for sheer ironic value.
