He was hit by tank fire on Christmas eve and lay in the field for 3 days, waiting for help to come, in a field of corpses. He watched our parachuters being shot from the sky and suffered severe frostbite that eventually took all of his toes. He twice was found by German soldiers, the first ones didn’t shoot him because they said he was nearly dead any way. The second set bayonetted him in the heart, and he was saved by the copy of the new testament in is pocket, which deflected the blade. One leg had been blown over his shoulder when he got hit, his hip and knees shattered, and he spent 18 month recuperating in a full body cast. He ended the story by saying “I’d do it all over again.
