Bageant and Webb: Virginia Will Miss’Em

I’ve lived in Mississippi far longer than I ever anticipated. I’ve tried to escape and thus far, it hasn’t worked. I’ll keep trying and perhaps I shall get it right eventually.

I remember a time only a few decades ago when this scenario would have played out: Jesus and Lucifer decided to go into politics. They both ran for governor of Mississippi Jesus went republican, Lucifer went democrat. Lucifer won by a landslide. Reason? ‘My daddy was a democrat, his daddy before him was a democrat so I’m a democrat.’

My, how times have changed.

What The Duck…Taught Me

2ndClassCitizenPundit was heading to a rally to get him neutered. Newt, not the duck. I wished him luck. 2CCP, not Newt. I have a rusty tin can and some duct tape with his name on it. Newt’s name, that is.

The War Game (and how you can play at home)

We Are Aiding and Abetting the Republicans

My ghod, PW, ‘The powers of fascism work very hard to keep the majority of Americans very, very weak.’

That, sir, may just be the best summation of the political shitstorm of the last decade. Yeah, Reagan may have started it. Hell, Nixon may have started it but Dubyah’s regime took it to a whole, new level.

A Letter From Sendai

Deep down inside, I knew human beings could live and prosper while maintaining respect for one another.

Thank you, Japan, for illustrating exactly that.

I rode out hurricanes in New Orleans (not Katrina) but having a baby changes everything. Before my kid, I would have stay. Post-child, I would run for the hills.

TAKE ACTION – How To Help Those In Japan

I went with Doctors Without Borders. There isn’t a specific fund for Japan but they are there, working hard. A big plus for me is an A rating, over 80% of donations go to relief efforts and the director’s salary is $100k as opposed to many other charities where the director makes 300k+ a year.

What IS leadership and what kind of leader do WE want?

Didn’t this kind of leadership just end in ’09?

Dubyah’s regime is as close to a fascist state as I ever want to experience. We were fed the ‘news’ they wanted us to hear. Laws were passed for ‘our own good’. The ‘Homeland’ became secure via an act. I waited for brown to become the new…whatever. ‘Christianity’ became the law of the land.

I am at a loss for answers. I can’t even begin to figure out what will pull this country from the cesspool in which it now languishes. You may just be correct, Adonia…may the gods help us if you are.

Thank you to the people of Bamiyan, Afghanistan.

What you said. Just when I think the human race has finally hit the point of no return, I see something like this. Thank the gods of the internet for immediate news.

Single working mom with one dependent here. I rely on EIC. TurboTax automatically checks for it, thank the gods.

This year my water heater is being replaced as is the backyard fence. I live in a modest house and pay less in a mortgage than I would in rent for an apartment of smaller square footage. EIC gives me a small cushion where I would otherwise have none.

I tell everybody.

May I please have a torch? I’ve always wanted to brandish a torch during a revolt.

Please? I’ll be careful. Promise.

Dude, you can come sit with me on the bad posters bench. I called someone a troll in my first few days here. I got schooled pretty quickly.

In the end, it’s all good. HP {spit} is a poisonous environment. Glad you’re here.

Or there is this option: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal

btw, my husband and I had one kid. We figured if we wanted another, we would adopt. Too many kids out there with no parents to bring another one into the world just for vanity.

But if there were ZPO, how would the Duggars, Octomom and Kate Gosslin make a living?

Race to the Bottom

I saw a program on the History Channel that wasn’t about pawn shops or couples who rabidly breed. It was about the history of hillbillies. A good portion of the program dealt with the redneck uprising in the coalfields of northern and central Appalachia between 1912 and 1936. (Yeah, it’s lifted from Wikipedia but I researched past that)

Those folks knew how to throw an uprising. I’m gonna work on channeling my inner redneck/hillbilly and see if I can’t open a can o’ whoop ass on some corporations.

I believe a small, polite revolution might just be in order here.

Awww, thanks, ma’am. He is a good kid and very self-reliant. He started staying home after school by himself this year (age 9). Oddly enough, his grades are better and his homework is done before I get home.

I miss my husband every day but you just gotta keep on keeping on.

I was widowed 6 years ago. My son was 3 at that time. Instead of being able to stay home and care for him, I had to work, not because I need the money but because I need the health care. I simply could not afford to insure both me and my son and maintain our moderate life. I could live on SSI and raise my son but I wouldn’t have health insurance. Social Security allows me to make 14k a year gratis then takes one dollar away for every two I earn over that. Between daycare, parking, clothes, gasoline, reduction in my SSI benefits and summer camp, my yearly take home pay is about $1000.00. I am paid well and I like my job but I would really rather be home, caring for my kid.

I tried to get my kid on the CHIPs program but I made $36 a month too much. Were I still living in Tennessee, we would have qualified for CHIPs but not here in Mississippi.

I’m not complaining but it would have been wonderful to be able to stay home and raise my son rather than turn that responsibility over to counselors and daycare workers. I don’t really know if this is even germane to the topic but I needed to vent. Please pardon.

An Ill-advised Rant on the Nature of Arguments

I’ve had the lead line of the chorus from ‘Oh You Pretty Things’ by David Bowie cruising through my brain for a few months now.

Nothing like an ear worm to make you nutz.

When all else fails, be nice – Patrick Swayze, Roadhouse

I love it! I’m a Southern girl and was raised to say ‘bless your heart’ when I mean ‘F$%$# YOU!’..all with a smile on my face.

I am so goddammed proud of Wisconsin! You folks ROCK! One of my buddies is working the ‘get out of jail free’ legal side of the protest. She is in the state legal system so I get frequent updates.

Were I sans responsibility or unemployed, I’d be up there with you. What you people are accomplishing is so incredibly important. I walk right next to you in spirit, if not body. Make a noise for me. I’m jealous!
