That’s from NON dominated non-GOP woman speak. My insights into GOP subservient women are based on fairly long observation in the field and some, albeit reluctant, oral history interviews. There are two kinds of subservient women – those raised in the tradition (they are often totally pissed and want out) and those who, for many reasons, have NOT been raised that way but have totally fucked up their lives and are longing for stability and predictability. That’s good for about 3 years. About a decade ago the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention was pictured with his wife – she was overweight, had on a stereotypical flowered dress and a hat that was beyond description. It looked like an inverted flower pot complete with flowers. And some peat moss. This was when the SBC decided all women had to be “subservient” to their husbands. She seemed to fit the mold I sent it to a friend who informed me that said woman, wife of the new prez, had a PhD. Huh? And yet she radiated superficial faux spirituality complete with really bad taste. PhD – and this is what she’s reduced to? By desire or by fiat? I will never know. But today’s defeat of the Blunt Amendment is partly due to women rising up and telling their husbands and boyfriends – you want nookie, I get my birth control, baby. It’s that or Lysistrata is your next wifey! Barefoot and pregnant is not on for most women, not even if they live in trailers, are poor, are dependent. Women are strong – don’t have to be rich, don’t have to be educated, but women “get” things men never will because we mop up the messes, we’re the ones running to post bail, we shop and balance bills, and we comfort and support and see stupid as well as smart. Most of us work AND raise kids as well as tend our elders and occasionally our drunks. Very few women are utterly defeated in the pursuit of self worth, and what goes on in the ballot box is entirely private. You vote for someone who supports YOU – men will never know. So GOP men? You may have more on your hands than you know. You think you have a subservient women? At least one of the outdoor scenes is the Duquesne blast furnaces across the river. I spent years around the steel mills of Homestead, Duquesne, Clairton (coke works), Weirton, WV, Lackawanna, NY, and various places in Ohio among others. It’s in my blood. I’m one of the few women to walk these mills stem to stern documenting them, the work, the lives of the people, and the company histories. I miss them and the people terribly – I love those places and this movie for its gritty reality. Thanks KT – I also love this scene. I don’t know this bar but do know dozens like it. Since the city’s claims to fame are Millard and Grover (Cleveland, not Norquist) it MAY explain the city’s slow descent into oblivion. Cleveland’s big deal was fathering a child out of wedlock. Though I once found papers from when he was sheriff that indicated he’d used his position to feather his nest rather unethically if not illegally. It’s a hard stretch to find admirable things to say about two such awful presidents, but trust me – the city boosters found what they could. That second hand carriage is on bold display in the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society. The bathtub we presume is in a landfill somewhere around DC. One does what one can. If mine are different from yours, well, your family is different from mine, too. So bloody the hell what? It just strikes me that this is VERY convenient timing. The policy has been around for months, so why now? Well, in the past month or so, two Catholic bishops were arrested for not filing notice with law enforcement concerning child sexual molestation cases in their jurisdictions. Back in 1984 four such cases hit the front page of the Providence (RI) paper. At that point the church leaped into action – and excommunicated the woman who was head of Planned Parenthood. So I see this uproar over contraception to be the same sleight-of-hand: deflect attention from the corrupt institutional acts and focus on a NON issue over which great action is demanded against a president the Bishops SHOULD admire for his commitment to social justice but can’t quite admire for his stand on those burning sexual justice issues. I know that could be just cynicism on my part, but hey. Patterns matter. I bet God is peeved but not at Obama. This is a very useful and clear discussion of how we can reverse our descent into a 19th-Century nation. It chilled me when you wrote above about how productivity has to go up or The Boss reminds you of all the people outside who want your job. That is a line right out of Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” about the 1906 Chicago stockyard workers. Damn. Another “forward to the past” moment! It is almost impossible to find goods made in the USA in lots of categories. Even if it has a US manufacturer, it’s often still made for real in China or elsewhere. One thing we also can do – look for Brazilian shoes (lots of emphasis there on unions – not that they ARE there but there is a movement) or European, Canadian, or Australian and New Zealand goods. Venezuela, El Salvador, and other countries are moving toward worker ownership, though it’s incomplete, and I don’t know WHAT they make that is exported here. Many “Second World” nations are bringing back manufacturing to their nations or never outsourced it in the first place. If you can find a Mennonite store that sells handmade things from cooperatives, that’s good, too. That is an option when US items are not available but those are. These are options when US items are not available but those types of merchandise are. Write to companies that are planning to close and move such as New Balance. Say you won’t buy their goods anymore. What you will find is that a lot of things – especially, I note, women’s clothing – is actually NOT cheaper. What they have done is keep the same price but widened the profit margin with cheap labor. The REALLY cheap goods also don’t last, so buying American does save over the long run. I do agree that wherever a US made item exists alongside one made in China, buy what you can afford. I KNOW times are hard and often the goods are more than you would like to spend, but we can help our own bottom line by buying LESS overall and MORE of US made items. There are directories of US made “stuff”. One is http://americansworking.com/ OK – the SECOND item is US made ammunition, but hey. You don’t HAVE to buy it, right?
