Even though I had thousands of comments, a couple of them actually worth reading, I felt that, by keeping that account there, I was leaving something behind that just wasn’t representative anymore. See, I’ve got a lot of experience with chatrooms over the years, and you can kinda tell who might be snarking as a habit, but their personality shows through somehow. But I learned years ago in other places and times to just tune out the trolls. I really never paid a whole lot of attention. I think I had heard the name a few times on the radio. I listened to Air America from the day it started, even met several on-air people from AA because I was living in NYC at the time and they had events down near the Village in the run-up to the 2004 election. I avoid “news” media like the plague, because I know how sckewed and shallow the stuff they air/print/talk about really is… fluff and fill and rah-rahing, false choices, foolishness as fact, and on and on. So, I hadn’t really thought about jumping around on the web to make comments on politics and current events. When I did find HP {[spit!]}, I thought, well, this is cool! And there were people that had some semblance of intelligence, and had facts, and quoted great thinkers, and knew history… wow! I knew I could jump in that pool, and I did, big time. Those of you that know me from HP {[spit!]} know that I tried very hard to stay well out of the flame wars and personal attacks. I tried very hard to make a reasoned argument and respond, even to the trollery, with reserve and the benefit of the doubt. I even took the dreaded Mod2 {[barf!]} badge seriously, and made an effort to use it as it was purportedly intended. I try to play by the rules as they are laid out. When all the weird shit started happening, I was puzzled. I don’t really pay much attention to things I canot control, and so I thought that maybe they were clamping down on all the nasty stuff I was seeing, or that the trollery had figured out how to get the Mod2 {[barf!]} badges and were lurking just to piss people off. I mean, how can you really tell? Well, what I do know is AOL. Been there forever. So when the sale happened, the light dawned. I asked around, looked at a couple places, and a friend steered me here. Camp Menominee on Sand Lake in Wisconsin is a girl’s summer camp. The counselors were generally college girls from Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago. I got a job as a sophomore in HS there as a kitchen helper and general cleaner-upper type guy. Paid minimum wage plus room and board. Think about artists (I know many here are artists in some way). There is not an artist alive or dead that ever thought any of their art pieces – -whether they be writing, painting, sculpture, photography – or any other medium, were “perfect.” Why is that? Personally, there has never been any job I’ve ever had that I didn’t think I was keeping barely one step ahead of failing. Yet, in most cases, I was always being told I was doing a great job. Were people just blowing smoke? I knew that I could do better if I was just a little smarter or had more information. I knew it, objectively. I remembered all the little screw-ups I made on my way to getting something done well enough to pass. So how was I doing well? maybe it’s individual. We all know people that just really don’t seem to care. They get by just fine, and never seem to mind or even notice that they leave a wake of projects half-done, barely-functional repairs, poorly-written missives, and a plethora of unresolved issues for others to clean up or deal with. Is that just me? I sometimes envy people that just don’t care. They seem happier, and certainly don’t seem to have any awareness – let alone guilt – concerning the way they go through life. Are they happier? Sometimes I think so. I have no illusions that anything anyone does or is is “perfect.” But striving to be better is not an option to me. having said all that, I am aware that I am speaking about internals. The whole notion that society in general focuses on externals – beauty or handsomeness, money, clothing, possessions – and heavily influences our kids and ourselves needs to be addressed. Absolutely. Educating ourselves and our kids is the only way to combat that, IMO. I don’t remember where I heard it, but I consider TV shows to be nothing more than fillers to keep our attention until the next commercial is shown. THAT’s the real business of any commercial TV show. They’d air a test pattern if people would stay tuned until a commercial came on if they could. Content of shows do not matter one whit to networks. Any time that happens, there is a cognitive dissonance that many simply don’t know how to deal with it, let alone what that feeling even is. Hence the prescribed or over the counter or illegal drugs… used to quench that dissonance. I believe that modern culture, especially Western culture, has created a society that simply has too much time on it’s hands. Really starving folks, or people that need to walk 3 miles for water every day, or even people in the Western culture that are too busy surviving day to day have no time to consider such things, worry about them, or even imagine what the hell this concept is. Now, I am not saying that we should all give it all up and live on a farm in Africa or central Asia, or that we shouldn’t consider ourselves lucky to be where we are, have a roof over our heads, enough to eat, and time to think about ourselves and our “plight,” but I imagine it’s a relatively new phenomenon for humans… time to think about the existential issues. We have not developed social systems to cope with that. Our societies these days are moving on parabolic curve upward in terms of what is happening, what we need to deal with, and the information we receive every day. I read somewhere that a person in the late 1800’s in America had to deal with a maximum of one new fact every day. Time to absorb, reflect, assimilate, even if you were busy with scrabbling for a living. We still scrabble, but how many new facts and images and ideas do we have to deal with each day? No wonder we are messed in the head, as my brother used to say? We have no genetic, societal, or evolutionary systems to cope with it. I am about as Caucasian as they come, so I cannot speak to or even comment on what blacks and Hispanics go through. I won’t even pretend to understand. I had a somewhat similar experience years ago, though. At the time I was a Senior Service Engineer for a computer company, and that meant driving all over the state of Wisconsin at all hours. I drove a silver Chevy G-10 van with no side windows, a box on wheels. In it were boxes of parts and racks of equipment and manuals, plus some overnight luggage. I was headed west on I-94 between Tomah and LaCrosse at about 3AM headed for a Holiday Inn and some much-needed sleep in LaCrosse. The road was lonely, and it was sometime in January. I didn’t think much about it when the blue flashes showed up behind me. I was on cruise control at the speed limit. I figured a busted tail light or an obscured license plate from dirt and snow. As is my usual practise when getting stopped by police at night, I hit all the interior lights, so that they can see in. I was a little puzzled when the cops asked me to step out without coming near, but it my policy to NEVER argue with guys that have guns, so I stepped out. In seconds, I was facedown on the shoulder at 17 below zero with a cop kneeling on my lower back. Cuffed, pushed into the back of a squad, and noticing that about 12 squads had come out of nowhere. A real “Holy Crap!” moment. It turned out that there had been a string of bank robberies late in the day farther south and the information they had was that the bad guys were headed north in a …. silver G-10 van. They had actually tracked me for miles and had shut down part of the freeway to isolate the vehicle. It was profiling of a sort, but not the personal kind. Anyway, it gives me a teeny, tiny glimpse, I guess, and I don’t know what to say other than that. I could do it, but I would hate it on a day to day basis. What I do know about is the concepts and the details and the real need to explain it in ways that people can understand. Now, I am going to be somewhat non-politcally correct telling this story, but it was the way it was… The business is a custom fabric and wallpaper design firm. Been in business for many years, and has outlet stores on Park ave, in NYC and on Rodeo Drive in LA, just to give you a hint about the clientele… They had seven(!) lines of business and the owner was a total control freak. So were his managers. Seems as if everyone in the company was gay, with all the attendant hissy fits over nothing in particular every time I turned around. We argued like scalded cats at every turn. Turns out this guy had been buying antique fabric and furniture in Europe for years as inspiration for his designs, and somehow all those costs ended up in the books as him oweing the business over $5mm rather than the other way around! Other than that, the books were a mess. Sheesh! I had to actually start from scratch and just abandon the old books and build a new set, all in Peachtree, moving balances over and getting everything to link up. I was there for weeks. He wanted every little thing in every line of business in it’s own account! That damned Chart report ran 12 pages! I have this thing about depreciation… In some texts they have it on the P&L and some on the BS… I don’t like it on the P&L for a couple of reasons, but the main one is that it is not real money, it’s a calculation. I have argued back and forth with CPAs over the years about that one, but, in the end, I don’t use the P&L itself tolook at things. I use a Variance report BASED on the P&L, so it doesn’t really matter. I’ll be getting to that in 3 or 4 articles down the road… LOL As to people using this in personal finances, you’re right. I have actually used Quicken in really small and simple businesses rather than Quickbooks. Works real well, and the Accountant keeps the formal books based on the Quicken checkbook with categories. Sometimes simple is best. Finally, except in certain cases, I HATE numbered accounts. I have yet to see any numbering system that survives 3 months of use in terms of consistency. Sooner or later you have to break whatever numerical system of categories and subs you are using and it gets confusing. I much prefer real descriptive account names so that there in no question of what transaction goes where. For example, “Discounts.” There are two types that are always confused, so I name one “Discounts Given” and the other “Discounts Taken.” Of course once a business gets to a certain point, you need to switch over to that standard numbered account system, but, by then, you generally have a well-trained and really good bookkeeper ho knows how to deal with it.
