I view proselytizers in much the same way I view anyone trying to sell me something at my front door. I have a family member who was ‘saved’ and this family member turned into the most self-righteous arsehole I’ve ever met and we no longer talk – I miss the person I once knew but the person who now inhabits that body is a total stranger to me; if this is what religion does to someone then I want no part of it. Having said that, I have met some wonderful people who live their faith every day – many of them right here on the Planet. They are wonderful, warm, non-judgmental and caring human beings. I think what we all forget is that without this intervention there would have been a blood bath – Qhadaffi has no compunction in wholesale slaughter of his own people. He would have bombed them, fired on them with tanks and if anybody was left he would have lined them up and shot them after a nice piece of torturing I’m sure. We also forget that the rebels were begging for assistance – not on the ground, but for protection from Q’s planes and tanks. From what I understand, President Obama’s startegy was many-fold: 1. No engagement without international approval, both from the UN and, more importantly, from the ME states themselves. The Arab League was fairly quick in agreeing to a no-fly zone and, armed with that, the UN was next with an amazing abstention from both Russia and China (although Germany surprised me) 2. Military engagement would not be US led – the Libyans have to own their revolution. If this was imposed from the outside it would have no legitimacy – and even less legitimacy if the imposer was the US (sorry – but the US is not yet liked yet alone loved in the ME). 3. Once the no-fly zone was established, the other parties to the alliance (NATO and the ME states) would take over 4. Mr. Obama also believes in diplomacy being used and this is what he will work on – freezing of assets, embargoes on whatever Q wants to do, starve the bugger out. Yes there will be civilian casualties, it’s unavoidable – I’m not a heartless bastard – I just think that doing nothing would bring even bigger casualties and Q would still be there. Whatever happens, if the revolution succeeds it is not up to us – any of us – to decide who will be in charge. Once the Libyans have made up their minds (does self-determination ring any bells) then we, as individual nations, can make up our minds as to how we will treat with the new Libya. Sorry – this second-guessing about what if this happens or what if that happens sometimes drives me nuts – what will happen is what will happen and other than giving the rebels some breathing space that’s all that will happen – the Libyans will decide their own fate. As long as your President is Mr. Obama, I really don’t believe that America needs worry about being embroiled in one conflict after another every time a dictator rears his/her ugly head ……. at least, that’s my read on your President. I got hooked on eagles in ’06 when an eagle cam became big news in Canada – there were a couple of cams – one on Hornby Island (although that nesting pair were unsuccessful and laid no eggs that year) and the other at Sidney on Van. Island. The latter pair successfully raised two eaglets and it was an amazing thing to watch them through the weeks until they finally took first flight! I have no words of wisdom as to how to survive or thrive in a marriage. I had a disastrous 1st marriage that lasted all of 10 months at the age of 19 – and now delight in a wonderful marriage of close to 40 years and counting. You either meet the right person or spend a lifetime trying to find them. Kindness, tolerance of each others foibles, counting to 10 before losing your cool and hopefully realizing that there was nothing to fight over anyway and laughter – lots of it. Hubby and I have always financially supported projects in the ‘3rd world’ but, when food banks first opened in the west I was outraged – that’s not hyperbole, I was foot-stompingly, rantingly, pacing back and forth, white-hot ANGRY. While hubby and I were supporting the 3rd world, somebody (naming no names) had turned the west into 3rd world nations – or at least had started down that road. We contribute to food banks as much as we can – but I do it with anger in my heart and a disgust at most politicians – none of them even remotely understand what it is that the governed want – they are too busy playing the game and listening to those that ‘brung them to the dance’. I bet not one of them is outraged at the presence of food banks, homeless folks on the streets, the working poor – not one of them. It has become, as you say, an accepted fact of life …… and to the pols, these folks have gone from being ‘unfortunate’ to being lazy, sucking the life out of their society, the trash heap of life.
