Criticize Al Gore all you want. I happen to think he is right. But the glee you go after this girl makes me sick. I was trying to make a softer point that this is apparently a cause célèbre, as well, and to be careful in messaging. Like, don’t hit people over the head and the Doctor Who was great in bending your mind, but it took me back to The Day After Tomorrow from 2004. It’s a disservice to sensationalize climate change. We’re a frog in a pot. It’s happening, but don’t feed into the Snowball on the Senate floor narrative. Science is more nuanced. And honestly, it’s already too late. Not a reason not to f******** change everything, but it is what it is. In Tucson, we have a monsoon season. About a decade ago we changed the paramaters of rainfall defining a monsoon. Do I deny the science? No. Do I understand island nations like The Maldives are in peril? Yes.
Do I live in the Sonoran Desert and have I seen it? Perhaps anecdotally.
What I have to say is so heterodox though. I’ve seen the ozone heal a little, I’ve seen the oceans adapt to spills.
But for nothing. I’ve seen mines in Montana to Arizona fill the water table with toxic sludge.
We all know about Flint, Michigan. We still endure.
Should we do something? Yes.
I guess I’m just more worried about us killing ourselves before we kill the planet, or any Mad Max scenario.
Not as if those things are mutually exclusive.
The hysteria and branding is more what irks me. Like, this isn’t going to happen right away.
Don’t get me wrong, it has started, and will continue, but I just don’t get worked up about it.
