I know you are right about that, but think back…how many press conferences have you seen from Harry Reid or even Nancy Pelosi recently? Any time there is comment, it always seems that Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and McCain are the first ones out of the gate. It seems that no Democrat has the balls to grab the mic!

The MSM will always feature any story that shows disagreement. You know how they have to have their “drama”! I wonder if there is really as much criticism from the progressives as the media reports. On the other hand, before I left HP, there were many comments bashing the President over his perceived lack of leadership on the health care issue.

I understand why President Obama handled health care as he did. He is a student of history, and he knew well how much the Clinton health care efforts were resented by Congress in the 90’s. Hillary basically wrote the bill and handed it to Congress and they didn’t like it one bit. So the President decided to delegate it to Congress, as it should be. Either way, he was going to be criticized.

I remember the flap in the media about the fly. He was actually criticized for killing a fly during an interview!! That’s when I knew he was looking at a long and very rocky road ahead, no matter what the issue.

Please do post it, K! I believe we are on the same page on the Democratic platform.

We Dems have always been a somewhat contentious bunch, arguing among ourselves…not like the lock-step GOP. But I don’t think I have ever seen anything like what’s happened in the health care debate. The culprit, as I see it, is the corporate money flowing into the pockets of our lawmakers. The Blue Dogs opened many eyes during this debacle!

I believe we are a center-left country. It’s the corruption of our Congress that lies at the heart of all the problems right now, including war funding pushed by the military industrial complex.

I wrote a comment yesterday regarding the Democrats’ apparent inability to control the message, be it from Congress or the White House. The republicans are always the first to run to the microphone to bash the President and any policy that would benefit the American people. The Democrats just don’t seem to be able to do the same to promote their ideas. They allow the republicans to completely control what the American people hear without much comment!

Here is a prime example of how some stories are simply overlooked or twisted by the MSM…that of the hold-up on the appointment of the TSA chief by Senator Jim DiMint (R-SC). This has been going on for several months and very little has been said about it. At a time when we need good leadership at the TSA with our airlines under attack, this pompous windbag of a senator holds up the appointment, supposedly because Mr. Souther (sp?) approves of unions. By the way, did I mention that the appointee is a black man?

DiMint should be raked over the coals for his position on this, but he apparently is getting a free pass from the media…no surprise here. But as the TSA continues without a competent leader at the helm, all the blame is placed on the President! This is infuriating!!

Nope, I like your other picture much better! I have a thing about “fake” cowboys who wouldn’t know which end of the cow to milk! We have lots of those around these parts.

I don’t know if this will make any sense to you, but I have always had an aversion to all things “cowboy”. I can’t stand country music or square dancing. We used to have to do it in school and I hated it!! Although born and raised in the south, I tried to put as much distance as I could between myself and the perception that we are a bunch of uneducated dunces who can’t speak the King’s English, cowboys included. It’s that stereotype of the semi-literate country bumpkin that I despise! And sir, you are NO country bumpkin!!

Loved your poetry yesterday!! I did log on to the website you provided and the book looks wonderful! You should definitely be compensated for your work! But if my vote counts, keep the old picture! 🙂

Never Forget – The Dark Days Could Come Again

Good post, Sue! And very timely! I suggested this morning in another comment that I wonder if there is really that much disagreement with the progressive wing of the Democratic party…or is it just the hyperbole of the MSM? You know how they will pick up on anything they think will be dramatic and give them ratings. What would be better than the left wing turning against the President?

I know there are some who are feeling the letdown. I have had some moments like that, especially with the escalation of the war in Afghanistan. But I also wrote that I am not ready to throw in the towel on the President. I am willing to give him his entire first term to address the problems that the Shrub left for him. Lord knows, it will take even longer than 4 years to clean up this mess! Everybody just needs to take a chill pill and let the man do his job!

If this were not so serious, it would be hilarious! I could have almost predicted the states involved.

When I first saw the word “unconstitutional” I thought this might be regarding the “Mandate” to force us to buy health insurance from for-profit companies. That, in my opinion, is the unconstitutional part of the bill.

But noooo! They are jealous that Nelson managed to get a chunk of money for Nebraska that they didn’t get! Pitiful!

The GOP is Poised for Possible Gains in 2010

Just an observation…why is it that the Democrats cannot seem to control the message?? We have control of the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate, but we have NO control over the message that goes out. I’m not sure if this is simple timidity on the part of the Dems, or whether they just expect people to buy what they are selling without comment, or if there is someone completely incompetent to handle the responsibility to get the word out.

During the heat of the summer, the Republicans raced for every open microphone, posing in front of every camera, and pontificating about how terrible the health care reform bill was. All the American people heard was the negative rhetoric, lies and distortions. Granted, the media in this country is largely controlled by the right wingers. But it seems to me that the Democrats could do a better job of getting their points out there…stronger as well as earlier! It should not be only President Obama’s job to get out in front of the stories. Harry Reid and others can certainly take up the slack!

I’m just sayin’….

Wow! What a great story! It was mesmerizing to read. Thanks, boomer, from bringing this one over from HP.

One thing I don’t understand…how was this hate-filled man allowed to get on that plane to begin with? We have some incredible computer systems in this world, systems that will not allow you to spend a penny more than what you have in your bank account, systems that will identify you along with your social security number, address, phone number and whether you paid your electric bill last year! Why do these systems not talk to each other? The only way we will be able to effectively stop these people from getting on aircraft is for these systems to communicate. Why is this seemingly such a problem?

I know, that’s rather simplistic, but this man was already on the “watch list” somewhere. Apparently, Amsterdam didn’t have that information.

Nicely done, e-cat! I like your style of writing. You manage to make me conjure up pictures in my mind’s eye of everything you saw. One cannot help but be touched by your description of the poverty these people live in.

It does bring things into perspective. As Nellie says..we are merely lucky. What is that old adage,”There, but for the grace of God, go I”?

A New Year

Hey javaz, I almost cried reading your resolutions. You helped me to see where I have been doing some things in the wrong way! I would love to be able to pull all this off myself! I resolve here and now to copy your list, if it’s okay with you, and put it up on my fridge as a reminder!

And I will, no doubt, feel the need to add a few personal items to it…first, I promise to become a better writer so that you and all the rest of these wonderful people don’t have to suffer my lack of skills! I have heard there is a good writing course at the local community college and I’m going to check it out. I’ve never taken one and I’m afraid it shows!

My letter to the FDA today

Thank you, Kesmarn, for a very sensitive comment! I also am a registered nurse (retired) and have seen the same thing. I guess it’s the stigma that I resent so much, having experienced the sneers and glares of pompous ex-smokers. There doesn’t seem to be that same stigma associated with alcohol…and I’m like you! Don’t get me started!

Khirad, you are correct! My ex-hubby was the director of a methadone treatment center and I learned a lot about addiction. It is, in many cases, easier to wean a person off heroin than it is to take them off nicotine. As I said before, medical intervention is sometimes necessary as it is with alcohol withdrawal.

No, javaz…you are not bad. I like my smoking too. I really would like to quit and have tried so many times I’ve lost count. Nothing makes me angrier than for someone to tell me that “Well, you just didn’t want to quit bad enough”! I am seriously addicted to nicotine and the people who say that have not walked in my shoes.

I once tried the “Nicotrol Inhaler” with the little cartridge. I was quite successful with it and didn’t smoke a single ciggie for six months. The problem was that I was unable to get off the inhaler. I still had the nicotine addiction. It was ridiculously expensive and not meant for long term usage, so I went back to smoking.

That was a very thoughtful reply. You must understand that we smokers have been damned by everybody for sooooo long. We are a bit defensive about it and just assume that we are being equated to the scum of the earth…again.

The bottom line is that nicotine is an extremely powerful addictive substance that requires more than will power to beat. I have seen heroin addicts come off easier than cigarette smokers. I’m not trying to make excuses. These are the facts. In many cases, medical intervention is required.

Thanks for posting that, javaz. At least, I have a little company here. I’m not quite as disciplined as you are but the one thing I try to do is to be considerate of other people who do not smoke. I will not smoke in someone else’s car or home unless invited to do so.

I have to agree with you on the tax part too. This is just an additional burden for poorer people. The rich can afford the taxes and don’t care. They will smoke anyway.

Oh Pepe! I’m sorry for your losses. I have smoked for years…and I only wish I had HALF the money back that I’ve spent trying to quit. Pills, patches, gum, filters, 21-day programs, groups, hypnosis, all to no avail. I am considering asking my doctor for the new drug, Chantix, to give it another go. But there is a down-side to the drug, severe depression! I certainly don’t need that.

While I can appreciate your point here, I can tell you that it is hell to be so addicted and to be prohibited from smoking. It’s absolute misery…the addiction controls your life.

I do agree with you about the advertising though. That would help to prevent teens from starting! I rue the day I picked up the first one but I thought it was “cool”!

I’m sorry I don’t have a link to the comments I was reading in the past several days about Arianna Huffington’s right-wing ties when she began the HP. There were several comments saying the the “leopard does not change its spots” and the like.

Murdoch and his empire have managed to gain control over so much media in this country. IMO, he needs to be “anti-trusted”. Fox News is on every cable network, while MSNBC is not available in many areas. The right wing definitely has the advantage.
