Though having a place to privately discuss what’s going on at other sites has its benefits, it is not, as you say, what the mission of this site is all about. That is, fostering discussions about issues of substance in an environment that respects and protects Freedom of Expression. Also, I am concerned about the slippery slope of creating separate gathering places and potentially, separate groups within the membership. The Planet is intended to bring people of all POVs together to discuss and debate issues. That would conflict with creating private threads that only some could participate on. What are you referring to, “probation for what someone said on another site”? Is HuffPo allegedly doing that? Not at The Planet, that would never be permitted here. The Terms of Use are the only rules enforced on this site and sanctions only apply to those who break the rules here. This site is based on the proposition that in the end, responsible, concerned people can treat each other with maturity and respect as they discuss and debate on issues. I know you share that belief and ensuring that The Planet remains an open site that sees all members as equals. On one hand, I think it could be a slippery slope to set up private threads that divide members and visitors between private and public areas. I do think this site should be as open and inclusive as possible. On the other hand, some discussions about HuffPo and internal issues might be best kept private. Maybe a middle ground makes sense. For example, a private thread on a specific matter that may be best kept private could be open for a limited time for discussion then closed. The post could be left up for a period of time so other Authors could read about the issue and comments, even though no more comments could be added. Still, there are practical issues connected to that now, with so many more members and more comments, it does take a lot more scrolling to get through all the comments and to the bottom of the page to post a new comment. I do think reducing the font size makes sense at this point. Have you tried just using the Zoom function in Safari? In Firefox, I can use the Zoom function to enlarge any website and as long as my browser stays open, it stays that way when I refresh or go to any other site. Meanwhile, the rest of my programs look as they normally do. To put your mind at ease, there won’t be “fanning” here. I see that as a manipulative and shallow incentive to hook people into a site, pandering to people’s egos to earn as many “Chuck E. Cheese” points as they can because that makes them better than others. But don’t stay away from the site too long or you may be passed up by others who will then be better than you I don’t see us as competing against each other here to see who can be the most popular, we’re here to enjoy the thoughtful, thought provoking and amusing exchange of opinions and ideas with each other. Now, we do have a rating system for articles and comments but that’s intended to highlight the most resonant ideas and opinions on the site, not elevate one member over another. I’m a fan of all of our members as a whole. I think many others here feel the same, taking pride in being part of a community of concerned and thoughtful friends and colleagues.
