All the 14th Amendment says is that you can’t question the validity of U.S. public debt. So Congress can’t take any steps that would make the country appear to be unable to pay it’s debts. Such as RAISING THE DEBT CEILING. That’s our answer to “defaulting”. Arbitrarily raising the level of debt we’re “allowed” to have. And whether the debt ceiling was raised or not is actually irrelevant. Even if it wasn’t raised, we wouldn’t have to “default”. There are processes in place to make sure things still run. These aren’t exactly global conflicts fought between powerful nations. They’re not even really wars. Just occupations. A vast majority of this country has nothing at stake in these “wars”. They have no impact or control over most of us. The 24/7 news channels are a joke and get far more credit than they deserve. Again, most people just don’t watch them. Aren’t influenced by them at all. When big events happen they may tune in, like this debt ceiling debate, but usually they watch something else. If the 24/7 channels really mattered,Obama wouldn’t be President right now. Which brings me to my third point; President Obama. I think that just about covers it. Most people in 1984 didn’t know people were being snatched off the street and tortured by the government. We know that for a fact and STILL don’t care. There is one thing Orwell must have never envisioned or it would have probably changed the book quite a bit. That thing is the internet. Worldwide communication without filters, without censorship. Even a strictly authoritarian country like China can’t keep it all out. And there were no satellites. He had no concept of what was about to come. Compromise can be bad. When you give too much and accept too little, you have failed at compromise. But it is one of the most necessary components of any democracy. 4.)I’ve seen Obama’s list of “accomplishments” before. Just about every time I criticized the man on Huff Po. This one made me chuckle: “He oversaw the creation of more jobs in 2010 alone than Bush did in eight years.” So, we’re basically saying he’s better than nothing. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Wake me when that list includes an end to illegal wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, no more escalations of illegal wars, an actual statement in support of gay marriage, an apology to every person in GITMO AFTER their release, and the immediate end of the National Emergency Act. But I agree. It’s not like he’s done nothing. I have criticisms but I can’t throw him under the bus. He doesn’t deserve it. 5.)I would love to see America and China become closer. They’re nearing a lot of the “growing pains” we had as an emerging superpower. i think we will aid them. Not because we owe them but because we need them. And we definitely need to be on the same page. China is no threat to us. We’re better off extending an olive branch. 6.)Debt, debt, debt. Is there some kind of problem with our debt? It’s a natural part of the world. I do like those big natural zoos though. I have to admit that. They do try to respect their freedom. But animals will die out. Animals we love. It’s arrogant to think we should try and stop it. This is how it goes. People will say, “Well we’re directly contributing to some of the extinctions by our own actions”. I would say probably so. And I would also say we are not the first or last species to do that. I love nature and I have more respect for it than most people I know. But humans will expand. Like many species. We will work the environment to suit our needs. Like many species. Animals will go extinct, as they have before. It is not up to us to decide which animals live and which ones die. And keeping them confined does not strengthen their species. It does not change the fact that their world is disappearing. It does make me sad. But I also know that, for now, it is how things must be. I don’t like it any more than you do. Leave them be. Let them enjoy what they have before it’s gone. We have no natural predators. We will expand til we can’t expand anymore. It’ll never be a “pet”. It’s easier if you get them very young so they form attachments but there’s still danger as they get older. Most wild animals(talking mostly mammals here) don’t recognize a “family structure” when they get older. Instincts and a need for a solitary life will outweigh your best intentions. Not every big cat is the same. Not every Canidae. I get the attraction though. For some people I think it’s just something for them to show off. I have an affinity for wolves because of what they are. Free. It sucks growing up surrounded by the beauty of nature. Knowing that, as a human, you aren’t part of it anymore. There’s a feeling that this is where you belong but you know you can’t go. You’d never survive. And, if you did, it’d probably be a life of solitude. We aren’t built that way. That’s why I don’t like the idea of caging wild animals. Even at zoos. It’s not what they are and it never will be. It’s not right to take away their freedom. They don’t belong on our world.
