From the Washington Monument to the Burj Dubai, each structure was a proclamation to the world that this country (the U.S., France, nowadays China and Dubai) was a force to be reckoned with. The great cathedrals of Europe probably had that element of pride in them as well, but the ostensible purpose of their spires was to turn one’s attention to the heavens. Getting about as far away from cathedrals as one can, aesthetically, to me the Sears (now Willis) holds the distinction of being the ugliest building ever to be the world’s tallest. I hope they eventually get around to building that Chicago Spire building Khirad mentioned. In three cases (Washington Monument to Eiffel Tower, Chrysler Building to Empire State Building, World Trade Center to Sears Tower) less than two years passed before the passing of the baton. Maybe that’s why the builders of the Burj were so secretive about the exact height of their building. » Posted By whatsthatsound On January 6, 2010 @ 5:44 am For any building nerds out there, I checked and it turns out I was almost spot on about the Burj comparison to the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 at a height of 324 meters. Up until that time (and completed only a couple years earlier) the highest structure on earth was the Washington Monument, which is 169 meters tall, slightly more than half the height of the Eiffel Tower. It, in turn beat out the Ulm Cathedral in Munster, Germany for that title. The Eiffel Tower remained the world’s tallest structure until the Chrysler Building just barely edged it forty years later (and lost the crown a year later to the Empire State Building). Who knows? The Burj may hold its title for even longer than the Eiffel Tower did. The threat of terrorism can now be used, as you describe it, as a means to power that would otherwise not be attainable. The shariah punks you refer to in your article are like entrepreneurs who have devised a new use for a very old practice. You have shed light on something really unsettling.
