I’ve come to think that a lot of the media hysteria is designed to do exactly what you’re feeling — to get people so disgusted that they get depressed and tune out of politics. Either that or to get them all riled up so that they’re off ranting at the wrong thing — like the Tea Party folks. Our media information stream is not designed to keep us involved and engaged. Just the opposite. I like your good news story idea. I do something like that every day. I read the LA transportation blogs — they are very entertaining — and for someone who cycles to work, like I do, very helpful. They have done all they can to discourage people, misinform, anger, convince everyone that it will never happen. I’m convinced we will have health care. And it will be a good civics lesson for the country — and especially for younger voters. And I hope progressives get a lesson from this, too. They get angry at the wrong thing. They make bad decisions based on bad information. They close out their options. They make bad choices. They delude themselves. They don’t see the world for what it is. And they act like idiots. I’ve had friends who have turned into absolute jackasses when they let this side of their personalities show. And it has taken a lot of forgiveness on my part to forget about it and move on. Hatred is something else. As you’ve portrayed it in your series, it’s a political force that all Americans need to resist with everything they’ve got. Hate groups have nothing short of the destruction of our social fabric as their goal. They use violence as their tool. They are paranoid and prey on vulnerable ignorant people. They are our own home-grown terrorists. We have a lot of work to do on both fronts — to smarten up people who are hanging onto bigotry, for whatever reason, and to make sure our home-grown terrorist hate groups never cause the kind of damage they would like to cause. This started w one woman and a facebook page. It’s remarkable. Her video is so good. And she’s a very appealing person. I think that’s part of what has caught on. And the subsequent video is just as appealing — very multicultural, very sensible. The marketing of this group is mature, friendly, caring, sensible. No histrionics. No hatred. No hyperbole. If PBS and NPR got enough money from donations, they wouldn’t be beholden to corporate sponsorship. We need a new business model for news and reporting. I think our newspapers, for the most part, still do an amazing job, but more and more they are showing signs of corporate interference. There is already a group focused on the SCOTUS decision — called Move to Amend. Not to say this wouldn’t be one of our issues, but I think we can be broader. Personally I’d like to start with our pledge to fight corporate interference in our government. And I’d want to consider the things that contribute to that interference. The SCOTUS decision is one of many. And we could also talk about things that have nothing to do with corporations, but that fight their influence. I would include weekend voting among those kinds of things — reforms that make it easier for people to go vote so that we have higher turnout. Or primary campaign projects — that focus on primary challengers who can replace corporate-owned incumbents. We could cover a broad range of issues. HP is being cited more and referenced more in reputable sources like the Post and the Times, and MSNBC. It can’t continue to be a tabloid if it wants to keep the cache that comes with that kind of exposure. Second, there have been a number of articles around the web on reputable sites dissing HP for inaccuracies, bias, and silliness.
