“At Last!”: How HP Continues to Cultivate Cynicism

The impatience and unrealistic expectations of some of my progressive friends has been a source of irritation.
Many seem to have neglected the amount of obstruction President Obama has faced from a congress tat vowed to make him a one-term president, even while his hand was still on the bible taking the Oath Of Office…
And particularly since the 2010 midterms when we ALLOWED the GOP to reclaim The House, and narrow the democratic majority in The Senate.
As Beatriz points out in her article, these things don’t ‘self-correct’ overnight.
In most cases, it takes several election cycles.
We should not have false expectation for this year’s mid-terms.
In spite of almost single-digit approval numbers, due to gerrymandering, the GOP may in fact be able to hold on to The House, though their majority will diminish…
Likewise, democrats in The Senate.
It is imperative to vote this year in order for us to be well-placed for real success in 2016.
As for HuffPo, to quote an old blues number…

Just out of curiosity, I paid HP a little visit this morning to check out the ‘state of affairs’.
Not only is the number of comments down dramatically, the quality of discourse is truly lacking.
One poster even called another a $#-ithead.

Congress Does the Limbo

The GOP has known for over a decade that it’s ideology is out of sync with the vast majority of Americans…
That is why they made such a concerted effort to gerrymander districts, and have attempted to put into place all types of obstructions to impede people’s access to cast their ballots.
Due to these endeavors, they may in fact squeak by and hold on to a [slim] majority in the House.
However, they will not be able to take control of the Senate, and fortunately, Harry Reid slammed through The Nuclear Option.
If it occurs, their’s will be the most tenuous of victories ever, one easily turned around in 2016.
It is imperative to get out the vote this November.
Even Banana Republics, countries governed by dictators give their governments a higher approval rating than 7%.
How embarrassing for us…
Surely we deserve better.

And just a few hours ago, President Obama made a most important statement…
He said in essence that he is keeping all of his options open with respect to America becoming involved…
The caveat being that there will be NO American boots on the ground, and that Malaki must first truly step up to the plate and demonstrate at the very least a willingness to take on ISIS.
President Obama displays the level-headed, patient pragmatism and depth of understanding of human nature and global affairs that his predecessor could not even dream of.
It is a great shame that what could have been a transformation[al] presidency has been so bogged down by cleaning up another’s mess, and fighting off the obstruction that comes from the party that created that/those mess[es] in the first place.
History will shine an accurate light on both the George W. Bush, as well as Obama presidencies.

An Open Letter To Any And All “Conservatives”

I am afraid that if given the power they would reverse decades of civil rights advances, halt same-sex marriage, reduce women to little more than child-bearing chattel, (all but totally eliminating Planned Parenthood),dumb-down, take even more funding way from public schools, pre-school education, slash Pell Grats, under fund the EPA, CDC, and NASA, and they would lower taxes even further for the 1% and corporations, keeping loopholes in place, and allowing said individuals to continue to take huge amounts of money out of our economy and stash it off-shore, oh, and allow evangelical Christianity to become even more intrusive in our politics/law-making..
I’m sure I’ve left a few things out….

Hello to one and all.
Like many, I have been forced to abandon HP as my ‘go-to site’.
With assistance from Murph and Ad Lib, and dialog with others, I find myself here.
Just reading this thread was a breath of fresh air.
The comments themselves, the format, all of it.
I am looking forward to becoming a regular poster here…
Will need some time to get my sea legs though:)>
As to the letter itself…
it seems as if we have reached a point in our politics where everything has been labeled and galvanized…
Left or right, liberal or conservative, progressive, libertarian, and who knows what else.
There appears to be no room for common ground.
I make no bones about the fact that I am a left-leaning progressive, who would probably have to be held at gun-point to pull the lever for republican.
However, that doesn’t mean that I dismiss everything ‘the other side’ stands for out of hand.
I would be more than happy to engage….
Problem is, it seems that today’s conservatives/TeaOP’ers, or what ever one wishes to call them, are not open to debate.
We are left to simply assume that their stances, their party platform is based on Evangelical dogma, (ALL that implies), fueled by unlimited sums of money pumped in by ‘special interests, like the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, and of course Rupert Murdoch…
Who has created an unprecedented 24/7 propaganda machine.
So, as long as their is no dialog, we must assume the worst…
I rather suspect that our worst assumptions really are spot on, but never mind.
We must organize, become involved in our communities like never before to get people truly informed, motivated and to the polling stations.
We cannot have a repeat of the 2010 midterms.
The stake couldn’t be any higher.

Huffington Post Finalizes Its Divorce From Its Bloggers

While I will miss HP, not only could I not abide the [FB] action they have taken, but more to the point, how loyal posters ere simply brushed off, disregarded.
A fresh new start here is just what the doctor ordered.
Nice to make everyone’s acquaintance, ee some old friends, and look forward to spirited discourse…
Our country is in dire straits, and we need to be talking about it, motivating one another, and taking action.
