A Thanksgiving Tradition – 2014

It was the dogs AdLib! A very Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all. We are on day three of dogs and (adult) kids sleeping over and NOT fighting. While we’ve gone through many changes these last few years, we are very keen on fun right now-and work. This has been a year of changes for our family. Of the things that have kept me preoccupied, much of it has been keeping our business up and running and that is due to our son and daughter joining the business. While enjoying them here, the pressure to increase the revenue stream also kept us up at night. We have added 2 dogs here, and our daughter has her own (and our son will be adding his own). This made for one of our very best Thanksgivings: 6 dogs, 12 people. Of those, 6 people mid thirties and under and 6 people 58 and over, a very new configuration to have the “young ones” joining us. So no grand kids, but crazy, wonderful any way.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It is one of the wondrous holidays in my mind: eat and share. There’s very little that asks families to get together just to enjoy each without presents or obligations. Thank you for all the effort you all put in to making this work.

The Man Me Mother Married

Kes and KT, Thank you so much; kinda something between big smiles and tiny tear wanting to sprout! I have missed everyone. You are all such a talented group of caring people and we all know that doesn’t happen along everyday. I’m at a loss to say more right now….. but thank you

We haven’t met, so let me introduce myself. I’m from the Chicago area, the only child of an Estonian immigrant, a ’46er as well, was sort of retired from a family consulting business that had such a few hard years that retirement stopped and busy started. I have loved my time here but felt that the people here are so rich and full in their ideas that my limited time to read, ponder and comment would sound “lightweight” to the depth of their writing.

Now our adult children are in the family business as well, so what was two paddlers in a nice canoe has become four paddlers and the “canoe” needs to grow. Busy here. I still regret not feeling the time to be involved here but I also still look to when I will have more time. And I’m so pleased to meet you! I can read the joy you bring 🙂

Here I was, sitting and thinking it was my unlucky day. All the political begging had stopped, for a while, and we went from a splendid autumn to cold, damp, drear winter weather. MY husband’s hand surgery went very well, and while I was doing extra chores because of it, everyone was pleased with his improvements. But even so, my cup was half full.

So, after a hard day, I opened my emails. I always look at PlanetPov and think “later, I’ll do it later” but today, when I returned home I knew that I would take time for myself and what a lovey story to be treated with. Thank you for such a lovely and disarming recounting.

The Weekend Music Thread – Animals Are People Too!

NIrek, It’s always so powerful and makes my mind slow down and listen and think and fell.
My family fell to Stalin, not as veterans but as victims and my mother would never have been able to come here to start a new life (me in tow) without the very brave men and women in our military. As she left Estonia, she and her two sisters became DPs in Germany and American military presence helped her find freedom to come here and start a new life. Veterans not only preserve freedom they share it.

An Open Letter to President Obama: Let Republicans Play with Their Own Boehner

Kalima, late to your comment but boy oh boy am I in the same camp. I voted, I contributed to the begging, weak kneed bums running from Obama but I told every one who called that the democrats were giving minorities absolutely no reason to vote; they won’t support the president, they don’t inform voters about their key legislation for women, children and healthcare. How does a base support that and the yet GOP always supports their base. I don’t think I’ve ever been as angry at my party as I have been this season. And with impeachment threats running rampant, I’m not sure what I’ll do if they can’t stand up straight. (Well, it seems frustration is difficult to keep coherent ;-))

Scottish Independence? A Push Back Against Conservatism Threatens the UK

Wanting independence and wanting growth, vitality, and self governing power seems to create a conundrum. Can small countries maintain the viability they want on their own? I guess it would depend on how entangled the asset/wealth/potential is. And I don’t know what their situation is but these would be the first questions to ask. I would, in my mind, be more satisfied if England has concessions and consequences. Being occupied is never quite what the occupier ever understands. it’s not the same two way street

Could Electing Hillary in 2016 Assure a Republican President in 2020?

We need some one who will roar! Roar when there are lies. Roar when the fact is ignored for the emotion. Roar when your own party stops supporting you. Roar about the truth: People can handle it and want it.

There’s really much more to the problems which most here would have opinions about, but I feel that the Democratic party has let the news forum and the GOP govern information while Obama tries to determine how strong a black man can be without causing more trouble.

And Hillary? What will the GOP/news do to her? They’ve become exemplary at creating the environment they want

Filial Love

KT, sorry for the unclear response: you can read the distractions in my evening. I love your Mom’s spirit and I know what it’s like to be more intimate with their personal habits. And it’s not always easy being with a parent that still wants to do what they want to do. Best wishes to us all!

» Posted By foodchain On July 17, 2014 @ 4:37 pm

KT, I think about them all as they come by and I feel like I can’t respond with the attention they deserve. But I remember well the poetry and other discussions. When I read the lead line, that was it. My mom had macular degeneration and retinal disease as they call it and a smoker until the end. I can hear the fight in her. I wish you many more years with her.

I’m sure I’ve missed other personal stories and I will try more to hop in if even for briefer comments.

» Posted By foodchain On July 17, 2014 @ 4:18 pm

KT, This time I had to stop everything. I understand “phone fear” and not knowing what situation will greet you when you pull in the driveway. I’m glad that everything is OK for now and that your stay with your mother was a good one. She seems to have a lot of spirit to keep going.

My thought are with you (each music day I sigh because “bouncing” in for a one liner just hurts) and your family. It’s nice when the best in everyone is brought out.

I miss you all. We’re so damn busy (scared busy) with our 2 kids joining our business; money looks different when you have to share it 3 ways instead of one.

The Capitalism That Stole Christmas – The Anti-Materialism Theme of Classic Christmas Films

Dear PlanetPov friends, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS. I’m late with a roast, and so many other things, but I think about you all very often.

My kids are home, two kids four dogs and my husband and I: much smaller than past years but still a joy. My hope is to be more present here in the new year. Thoughts are always with you. Take joy

In Remembrance of KQuark

Kes, thanks for mentioning “Derek”. I started watching later last night. Kudos to Netflix for fighting the system and to Gervais for his portrayal in this role.

I’m going to start looking for nuggets of joy and beauty every where I can! Knowing a person is beautiful makes the system even harsher and yet knowing them– KQ, Bito–makes us fuller, more complete and more resolute.

Glad to hear your son. I know the smiles and they feel terrific!

» Posted By foodchain On September 17, 2013 @ 5:16 pm

Sally, That means a lot. Smiles on my face!

Choice, I so feel the same in my way. My time has been so good in many ways but has made it hard for me to focus here. You all are such wonderful people.

» Posted By foodchain On September 16, 2013 @ 5:42 pm

My deepest sympathies to everyone; KQ touched so many lives–mine, unfortunately less than many here. The reflections you each bring in your tributes says so much about him and about you all. While the world is a bit dimmer for losing KQ, it seems each of your lives are that much brighter for having known him.

What a wonderful gift he gave in his living. I feel blessed to have known him a little. And I hope his story helps mend a very painfully broken system.

Weekend Music Thread – Chill Out

KT, thaks for this. Hey to all. Norah Jones–she’s on now while I’m cooking. God, I’ve been chopping forever, but she’s Cooooool.

I think Marvin Gaye; “What’ Going On”

Dave Brubeck, the whole “take Five” album. Really, I will try to hear him tomorrow.

While I would like to retire (at a modest 67yrs) life is not giving me that but I do have my kids here. We are trying our best to make a Mom and Pop consulting business incorporate 2 more people. The income demand just shot up and we are all stressed.

Would love to do more on Chilll.

Weekend Music Thread- A Tribute To Black American Musicians

If they gave us no more than music, black people have earned a place that says they’ve contributed more than Monsanto, Dupont, and GE in $$ and enjoyment. (of course I haven’t run any numbers) Tina Turner, Otis Redding, I mean, really, where does one start?

So we sent our son back to China; these two songs he played two years ago on his way to the airport away from us:
I think this Dawes kid (white) has captured something.

WATCH LIVE: 50th Anniversary of The March On Washington

I agree KT; clueless wouldn’t have been so bad had he not been surrounded by evil. I think he was naive and uninvolved with the real America.

AdLib, is it gerrymandering districts or is it pure embarrassment at being booed? I’m glad you called my attention to it. It’s hard to believe that they could divide so firmly along this line after all they’ve already been through.

salve is a good word–soothing and protective.

It just makes me proud, that despite the hatred we experience, that we can also experience this. Thank God for this little light.

In Security – Greater Protection Through Greater Vulnerability

Oh Ad, I can’t keep up with all your points: each comment I have for one is brushed aside for the next. Here are some thoughts though: I wonder if Obama is playing the “rope a dope” with the GOP. If you can’t pass anything, if they will lie about what they do to hurt your position, then continuing George’s policies are a perfect answer. We can’t do nothing and the GOP won’t let him do anything better–nor will our Democrats I’m afraid.

These big brother fears were to keep the masses in line, sort of like China: the fear being there are too many people to manage if they fall out of control. Look at our right wing to see the potential. What if they numbered hundreds of millions, armed and hating the government.

But this “spying’ is entirely different. 911 has made a huge difference but it is due to the enormous cultural, religious and economic disparities in the world. Our post WWII super power war with Russia set up some of the divisions we face and our oil problem has set up others.

Without some plan to work with these crushing disparities, we will be spying–another cold war espionage thrill. Our gun toting, cowboy walking and talking obstructionists leave us little choice. Play them for now.

I don’t like it. I’d like to think our leadership could do better than hope for an attack on Obama’s watch, but I don’t trust them one whit.

Weekend Music Theme-As You Please

And I have more time tonight than others. I’ve liked them all. Sometimes all I can do is scroll and wish I had been there.
