First is the obvious– prejudice. It is not so much about Obama himself, as his ending forever the ability for all white trash to have superiority over SOMEONE. I know this sounds harsh, this is how it has always looked from my side of the race issue. Second is the fear that “there but for the grace of god go I.” They are so invested in the idea that bad things happen to bad people and vice versa, that they fear and hate any who may show them that sometimes tragedy befalls even good people. How many times was there a subtext–on both sides– of wondering what kind of person my mother must be to have become disabled. It must be a matter of good and evil or we are all exposed to the risk of our own tragedy.
