I don’t pretend to know a great deal about global warming/climate change, but I can see the signs and no amount of ignoring the issue is going to make it go away. You have an undercurrent that is bubbling up in this country that are not happy with the way things are going. They don’t like how years of working toward civil rights has led to a black man in their White House. The fact that he is a very intelligent black man is even more disturbing to them. Think about the candidates they have tried out, Herman Cain, Alan West and Ben Carson. Of the three, Carson is the only “intellectual” and he has outed himself as being against LGBT and poor people. He is supposed to be a Christian yet he used the National Prayer breakfast to lobby for lower taxes for the rich. He worked for a hospital, that in the past, has been accused of using Black people for experiments. Johns Hopkins was supposed to be a hospital that treated the poor and minorities first, the rich second. It’s history alone should have been reason for him to go somewhere else. He should have been aware of Henrietta Lacks but I would bet if you asked him, he would have no idea. He now has no compassion for the people who are in the same situation he was in growing up. These are the candidates they choose. To me, it is symbolism, nothing more. The Teas are angry people. They feel their country has been taken away from them. It does not matter if it is not true, they think it is. I have always marveled at how they, as voters, can look at their do-nothing congress and justify voting for them again. He has serious delusions regarding a variety of subjects including his idea that his son will usher in the Rapture and has compared him to Jeremiah. Some of his speeches border on terrorist speech. He has no problem in telling very obvious lies and seems to have disdain for many of our institutions. This fits that Libertarian/Tea Party group think perfectly. I got a great package but was without a job. I took advantage of the 6 months UI and took the time to ponder. We ended up selling our half million dollar home and moving out of state buying a home for 168 thousand. I decided then that while I did need spending money, I did not need that much, so I decided to do an 8 and out the gate type of job. It worked out pretty well, bridging us to my husband’s social security and we eventually sold at the top of the market there and moved back to CA. I have, in recent years, gone minimalist. We downsized to a 1087 sq ft 3-2 condo and the rooms were very small so we had to get rid of tons of stuff. If you can believe it, when we had our yard sale in Reno we helped a newly married couple furnish their home almost completely. When we were going through this process, I looked around and thought, for what? Besides being able to help that couple, it took us a month to go through everything in the house and pack. We had all that “stuff” as George Carlin would say and we bought that big house because of that “stuff” In fact 3 or 4 months after we moved in, I had found a whole section of cabinets that were almost empty, oops, must find “stuff” to fill it and I did. Two years ago, we bought again. It is a 1500 sq ft townhome but guess what? I learned my lesson, we have not filled this house up with “stuff”. We have wide open space in the house and I like it, better yet, we could downsize again and not have too much to sell. There is something to be said for living simply. The only place I have overload is in my craft room but every single thing there is necessary 🙂 Just think if you had that big/medium “mcmansion” there is a good chance you would not have been out there to enjoy Mother Nature’s beautiful display and have a real down to earth dialogue with your neightbor. You might have been burned out from taking care of all that “stuff”. I think that is what scares me about the Religious Right. Just like the Kochs, they are amassing great fortunes in their churches and organizations primarily because they have a tax free status and the status applies to everything they do. With so much money they are able to build mega churches with all kids of activities. Coffee shops, McDonalds and other distractions are in these “churches” and they are there to entice people. In individual sizes, they have eclipsed the Catholic churches in their areas. When you can reach and influence that many people, it is easy to manipulate and even to get them to go against everything they know is right. In the sense of these mega churches, religion and it’s trappings is the opiate of the masses who attend.
I did not mean to sound like the grammar police, I just noticed the squiggly line when I copy and pasted it, heck we all make mistakes, most likely from typing too fast. I do like the internet grammar/spell check police because I can look at a document and right away see possible problems.
I can certainly agree with your philosophy, at least for the past ten years. I worked for a major corporation and the money was obscene. If I named it, you would know it, in a sense, but not know it not having spent your career in banking(I am assuming here). It was Visa, the counterpart organization to MasterCard. The two are the member organizations for banks who issue credit cards and process merchant transactions.
