When Dennis was asked on Ed’s show (I can’t believe I actually watched Ed) about other presidents who had interventions without Congress, Dennis responded, “each circumstance is different”. What a whackjob. If Dennis is accusing the President of an unconstitutional action, than ALL former presidents who did the very same thing committed unconstitutional acts.

I am a Doo Wop junkie. Here is Cleveland Still and the Dubs. Cleveland was 70 when he sang these two songs on one of the Doo Wop shows on Public TV. Both songs are great, but I really like the second song – Could This Be Magic.

Turn left, Turn right, Turn off

Abby, I agree. Especially about marketing. Sometimes things that are right in front of you are missed. The left needs people who write short messages for greeting cards to produce TV ads. Or people who write jingles for a living. Seriously. The left seems unable to come up with catchy one-liners. Unfortunately, we do live in a time of sound bites and instant gratification. Most people are not political junkies. Unless some politician makes an extreme move as Walker did, and thousands of people protest – people don’t know about it. Ask any person on the street what they think about the law Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and the Repubs passed and they won’t have a clue.

But not only do we have a messaging problem, we don’t have Dems on the tube. Or the ones that do show up are too soft spoken. We need some fire from our Dem Reps.

Absolutely the Cons control the message. I don’t watch Sunday morning talk shows, but based on what I’ve read the majority of the interviewees are Repubs – and so are hosts. There was absolutely NOTHING on the news about WI over the weekend. No video of the 100,000 protesters or the tractors. How anyone can still believe in the myth of the “liberal media” is beyond me.

I don’t believe for ONE Minute that President Obama believes that tax cuts have a stimulative effect on the economy. President Obama wanted tax cuts for the middle class (which he promised)and the other tax cuts for small businesses, etc. He wanted START and he wanted DADT – I may left out some other stuff. There are progressives who would rather he had said FU to the Repubs and walked away with nothing – rather than giving tax cuts to the rich. I’m not what of those. What I’ve found in my almost 62 years is that in a whole lot of instances you have to give up something to get something. Could the middle class really afford a tax increase? Would the LGBT community really wait indefinitely for DADT? Should the President have turned away from START. Yeah, the Rethugs held these things hostage. No doubt about it. But they knew with a Rethug majority coming through the gates, they were holding the best hand.

Many disgruntled progressives sat home. Ed Schultz advised his listeners NOT to vote. Who does that? The Professional Left constantly denigrated the President and the Democrats because they were not moving fast enough or they didn’t move far enough to the left. Like it or not we have Blue Dogs in the Congress. These folks represent conservative districts or states. Granted, if appears that some Blue Dogs didn’t listen to their constituents on at least one issue – the public option.

I visit several “far left” web sites and frankly the immaturity of the comments is astounding. They ascribe simplistic solutions to complex problems. It appears that all they know is that they want what they want and they want it NOW.

You didn’t mention President Obama by name, but your inference was more than clear. President Obama never sold himself as “far left”. I’m not going to go into everything that may or may not be disappointing about President Obama. Personally, my feet were firmly planted on the ground in the voting booth. I didn’t put him on a pedestal and I understood that the very real possibility exist that what a candidate says and what may transpire once they have to govern can be different.

We’ve had this conversation here before and I won’t repeat what I’ve said in the past – except to state that major legislation usually occurs incrementally. Too many progressives seem not to understand this is how it happens in a democracy. It’s messy.

I don’t know if there is as much racism on the left as there is on the right. However, I will agree with you that on progressive sites, such as Alternet, racist terms are used to describe the President. I ripped them a new one at that site and never returned. Quiet as it’s kept black folks KNOW that racism exist on both the left and the right. However, black folks also know that we benefit from a Party who is at least interested in legislating for the middle class and the poor. Many of us are not under any illusions about the reality of politics.

This is what Walker said in his speech today:

“We followed the law, and yet it allows us to move forward with these reforms — which are indeed fiscal,” said Walker. “They’re not in conflict with that requirement for a quorum, but they are indeed fiscal. They give a fiscal benefit to the state……

If the bill is “fiscal” (impacting the budget) then a quorum was needed. What am I not understanding here?

For at least a year, I constantly asked where were the positive articles about ANY accomplishment of this administration. I didn’t know what AH’s agenda was, but it certainly was not to advocate for Progressives/liberals/Democrats. I became so disgusted with AH that when I saw her on TV, I changed the channel. Beware of those who carried the Republican banner, and now claim that they are Progressives.

I think people who drink and drive (even if it’s a couple of drinks) don’t see any difference in their driving ability compared to driving without having any drinks. I convinced my husband (many years ago) that he did in fact drive differently after a couple of drinks. He drove faster. Since I rarely if ever drink I was acutely aware of those differences. People who drink and drive think they are driving normally, IMO.

I usually don’t jump into discussions of this nature, but I’ve seen many Presidents in my lifetime. Maybe one day we’ll get one who is all things to all people. I’m pretty pragmatic in my “old” age so please forgive me. When Social Security was passed, had I been alive I would NOT have been included. When women received the right to vote, had I been alive I would NOT have been included. When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed had I lived in some parts of the south it wouldn’t have meant a damn thing to my life style. When the Voting Rights Act was passed, I still would NOT have been allowed to vote in certain areas in this nation. You know one of the things being black in this nation has taught me and some others like me? PATIENCE. Now you may see that as a bad thing. When I was young I was NOT a fan of MLK, Jr. Nope. I was a militant. I joined the NRA. I was going “to take it to the streets”. Thank gawd for MLK, Jr. Can you imagine the blood bath? Black folks would have been decimated. So why do I say this? I say this because you seem to believe that President Obama was going to come into office and totally dismantle a health care system, a financial system, the MIC, completely change foreign policy, free the gays, and (I’ll add what people like Tavis think) bring ALL black and brown people out of poverty. Many black folks are taught that we can not be “as good”, we “have to be better”. It seems to me that President Obama was expected to be the “great black hope”. People on the far left act as though they never heard his policy regarding the war in Afghanistan. Yes he made some campaign pledges that he was unable or unwilling to keep. Remember Bush 1 and his infamous “read my lips – no new taxes”. There is a difference between campaigning and governing.

You say “he leaves no legacy”. Well maybe it depends on the side of the fence you’re on. My husband had a heart attack and a stroke. Our insurance company can NO longer place a cap on his coverage. One of my best friends had breast cancer in 1996. For the first time, she has health insurance. So I guess that’s not a legacy. But it is a change and I’m sure their are thousands of people who are pretty damn glad for that change. Maybe SCHIP is not a legacy. But tell that to the parents who can now take their kids to clinics and doctors. Equal pay for equal work. Maybe young women will find more equity in the work place – but that’s not a legacy.

I’m sure you have visited many sites where the accomplishments of this administration are listed. It just seems that none of them are good enough for you. President Obama has gotten more legislation passed than LBJ. But he has no legacy. Ok, I get it. Incremental steps are not good enough. I get it.

BTW, how much of all the non-legacy legislation would have been signed by a Republican president? Clinton couldn’t get any kind of health care passed. Hell Truman couldn’t.

What’s missing? Community. I don’t live in a rural town of 1000 people where everyone knows everyone else and the neighbors come running to help someone in trouble. Growing up, we had “neighborhoods” in the city. People knew their neighbors. Kids got scolded by any adult who saw the kid doing wrong. Now many of us feel isolated. We are more of an “individualistic” society than ever – at least during my lifetime. There is no spirit of community. Many of us are striving to survive as you said. We need food, clothing and shelter and it’s taking a lot of resources to provide those things. We’re so caught up in trying to survive that when we do look up it’s to find an escape – Dancing with Stars or some such foolishness.

I have traveled many paths searching for the evasive “truth” of how to live ones life. It is said in the Qu’ran that “to the believer this life is hell”. I think what that means and what you are saying (if I understand) is that it’s very difficult to see and understand what is happening around you and NOT be sad, angry and frustrated. Ignorance IS bliss. You can walk through life and not be bothered by the “details”. But I believe for those who do ‘see’, you have to snatch those moments of content and happiness whenever and wherever you can and hold on to them.

Fannie Lou Hamer said “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired”. So yeah, I think we all feel that way from time to time.

I watched the Sunset Limited for the first time last week. “White” viewed the world as a dark and awful place. I would not want to be where he resided.

Diebold? Here in Maryland we have elected Democrats in recent years. However, I don’t trust the Diebold machines. There is NO paper trail. I am not computer savvy, but my husband is. He’s very wary at the relative ease that these machines can be hacked. As for FL, it’s possible. I don’t put anything past the Repubs.

My mother died when I was 13. I came home from school and she had dropped dead from a heart attack. No warning or sickness. It was devastating. It’s still devastating. But it taught me that some awful shit can happen to you in this thing we call life.

You are definitely not alone. Some of us experienced what you write about years ago – long before this economic downturn. I did and thankfully I survived. What I have learned in my almost 62 years is if you live long enough more shit WILL happen. It’s life. We struggle. Your struggle may not be my struggle – but we all struggle. So many cliches that ‘old folks’ use to say – roll with punches – it’s not how you get knocked down, it’s how you get up are true.

You have put into words what so many of us feel in our hearts. But you know what? There are many, many days that I absolutely love this life. Even though my husband has had a heart attack and a stroke. He’s back at work. He never gave up and neither did I. Oh, it was tough. Unbelievably tough, but once again we made it through. Roll with the punches. You do what you can and enjoy this life as much as you can for as long as you. And helping others makes your heart glow.

I have felt like a second class citizen for most of my life. Truth be told there are times when I still do. It comes with being a minority, I think.
