We are slow learners though – just hopefully not too slow. » Posted By NirekJunior On May 26, 2014 @ 4:22 pm I heard something similar on NPR recently, and I agree completely that Nascar could make itself a real leader in electric cars, and do a great deal to improve it’s image at the same time which would appeal to the wallets of those in charge (and sadly that’s probably a necessity). Why stop there though? I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’m pretty sure the sun gives us all the energy we need worldwide every few seconds – maybe it’s minutes, someone can probably find that number. Solar panels everywhere…every flat roofed building (think schools, malls, grocery stores, everything with a large footprint like that), put panels on top of trains that sit in rail yards for days at a time. The only limit is the will to do it, and of course countering the desires of the oil monopolies that want to keep solar/renewable power off the market. I think a large part of the change will need to come from better education – both in schools (as many schools are not doing well with teaching essentials, and I never really had a course in civics which ought to be mandatory) and from parents. There’s all too many parents who don’t have the time/will/ability to teach their kids civic responsibility. I was lucky growing up to have great parents who taught me what I needed to know and gave me the ability to find out for myself what I don’t know. I have seen many children now though who – if they don’t know the answer to something – have no ability to find it, despite the amazing technology we now have available. Back in the day it was looking it up in an encyclopedia or going to the library. Today – kids seem unable to figure things out on their own. The republicans are the party of ‘no’ because they have no platform to actually run on outside of less regulation and more tax breaks for big business. That alone will hardly get them votes, so they play on the old hatreds of the south (that’s a broad generalization sure, but if you look at a political map you see more or less the Mason-Dixon line) and that includes racism and sexism and homophobia. I’m not sure how the republicans can realistically win an election when their voting records are No on every pertinent issue, but with all the money they get from the Koch bros and the spin they get from Fox “News” they’ll still have a chance. If companies are people, they ought to be subject to the same tax laws and penalties for tax evasion that everyday people are subject to. Of course it’s absurd that companies are people, and absurd that companies and the wealthiest 1% don’t pay their fair share of taxes. The tax laws in general should be radically simplified, and there should be a cap on what CEOs make – no more than say ten times what the lowest paid employee makes. As long as money controls politics though, and by extension as long as corporations control politics with their ‘donations’ (one might read that as bribes) thing won’t change – at least not in any real substantial way. Agreed that rail is among the most efficient means of transport – I’d like to see more investment in that infrastructure that would add jobs, increase speed of transport, increase safety (you should see the FRA rule books…) and generally would just be a good thing. Passenger service that is on par with what other countries have would be great as well. Not fast enough, but every little bit helps. Just recently I’ve seen small solar panels on light poles here in Rut-Vegas – baby steps, but at least steps in the right direction. While we’re adding solar to supermarket and high school roofs, among other things, why not affix solar panels to the tops of train box cars – make the rails even more efficient.
