Basically when it’s used with lies it’s akin to trying to baffle the audience with bullshit. It’s been outlawed in many debate formats just because it’s to difficult to determine the veracity of claims quick enough to evaluate a debate performance. Climate change and other denialists use this technique extensively to undermine truthful public discourse. That being said Obama should have been ready for anything because Romney has used this technique to a lesser degree before. But the thing I noticed was how most of the swing state polls favored McCain last time around, especially in states with a big minority population. In fact in 8 out of 11 swing states Obama’s poll numbers were underestimated in 2008. One poll was spot on and the two other polls were off only 0.2% in Obama’s favor. Meanwhile Obama’s support was underestimated by a whopping 10% in NV, almost 9% in WI, 4.5% in CO, 4% in NH, almost 4% in VA and even 1.5% nationally. Adam Smith was a big proponent that in a capitalist system the whole of society should benefit. Wages should be high and business should have a fiduciary responsibility to elevate society as a whole. So my point is if you are a true Adam Smith free enterprise capitalist then you believe that management AND workers AND society as a whole should benefit.
