We don’t have Capitalism in this country which means a free market economy for some industrial segments with trust laws enforced. We have a series of oligarchies controlled by very large global corporations. I prefer multiple systems for different segments of the economy. For some segments which are less capital intensive like retailers full free market competition works well. That’s why retailers profit margins are relatively low. For capital intensive industries like huge manufactures and the financial sector many regulations need to be enforced including anti-trust laws to keep them from usurping the markets. For some industries like healthcare you even need government competition to keep them honest. The problem with any Utopian ideal as a system is that one size does not fit all. When Hollywood doesn’t deliver the big bang or the happy ending people who actually pay to got to movies to see the audience is pulled out of their comfort zones. My wife and I are huge anglophiles and shows like “Shameless” which absolutely is shameless are far beyond the stories Hollywood produces. It’s all about risk taking and Hollywood is risk adverse so they do the same remakes, sequels and comic book live action films over and over again. It’s sad when probably the best performance in the last few years was Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight”. Other British shows I would recommend are “New Tricks” and “Inspector Lewis” (which I actually like better than the last couple years of “Inspector Morse” the original). You usually can find most good British shows on PBS, IFC or Sundance. Unfortunately BBC America has kind of sold out and is showing these cruddy reality shows and shite like that. For more current movies I would recommend “Mulholland Drive” by David Lynch. The president simply does not win when race becomes an issue we saw that at the end of the primaries. People tend to become tribalistic and the white tribe at least for a decade or two out numbers the other tribes. The best thing he can do is get his agenda passed and show results. Right now it’s too early to show results even the early signs are the economy is getting better. We can’t ignore the positives too. This is the first western democracy to vote for an ethnic minority. This proves people will come around if things get better. The biggest thing Dems need to watch out for is a hate backlash during the 2010 elections and not lose Congress but instead vote more progressives in Congress.
