It’s a little bit of a running joke in business. Many things we thing of as marriage rights are shared in business partnerships. That just gave me a cynical idea. Gay couples in states like NC should start up their own business partnerships and get many of the rights they would not get as individuals. Obviously it would not make up for the 2nd citizen status in those states but it would still be a stick in the eye to the right wing. I know policy has not changed but people’s attitudes do someone depend on what their leaders think to some degree. I think especially in the African American church community Obama coming out for same sex marriage could change attitudes allot. Nothing’s going to happen tomorrow, a month from now or maybe not even a year from now that was not going to happen anyway. But 10 years from now with things trending the way they are Obama explicitly coming out for same sex marriage should accelerate progress. I also think it splits on an issue but eventually America is going to come together on gay rights and wonder what the hell we were thinking back then. Similar to what Andrew Sullivan said before he came out to explicitly to support same sex marriage I was fine with Obama’s position because like you eloquently pointed out he did not just talk the talk but was the first president to really walk the walk on LGBT issues. But I have to admit Obama specifically coming out and supporting same sex marriage did mean more to me than I thought it would. Way more. I’m not letting the media off the hook at all either. They were all over Obama on this issue but always give Romney a pass on his tough issues. Why aren’t they badgering Romney on the immigration issue or how he will pay for HUGE defense increases and tax cuts while promising to cut the federal budget? Obama’s support for gay marriage splits US FFS how is giving equal rights to all splitting America. The GOP is the one dividing people. In effect the GOP is saying that if you are attracted to your same sex that you deserve 2nd class citizenship. The issue divides just like the slavery issue did but there is a right and wrong side here and there is no moral equivalent. In the latest CBS polls Romney wins women by 2% WTF?! I know the fundamentals don’t look good for Romney but some of those are turning around as well. Most importantly I look also look at the trends like minority voter registration being down and all the new laws to make voter registration harder, especially in swing states like FL. When you see things like Warren behind in MA and Walker ahead by 5 points in WI all I can say is people have not learned their lessons about the GOP and never will with their deafening sound machine. I’m glad you brought up the debates because they could be a trap for Obama to rely on them because expectations will all be on Obama’s side. What happens if he’s not as good as people expect? I think you have religion which includes the literal interpretation of the bible and Christ’s teachings as a subset of most Christian religions. In fact Isaac Newton went so far as to rewrite the bible in an attempt to separate the two and focus on Christ’s teachings. Far right religious groups are based very little on Christ’s teachings in fundamental ways. The biggest way being that groups like the Dominionists do not even prescribe to the golden rule. For example they only treat people like they would treat themselves if they believe what they believe and look down on all others. Anther fundamental difference is how they spread the word of Christ. Christ wanted to enlighten people NOT conquer people to follow his beliefs. Ergo the big difference is Christ wanted to give people a choice where groups like the Dominionists want to force their choice on everyone. Jobs numbers are seasonally adjusted but I think some of those adjustments are out of date. Last year we had the same swoon in job numbers this time of year so obviously Spring is not the jobs boom it once may have been. The reason the head of GS is not in jail is because the rules of the road were such that what they did was very close to being legal. Nobody prosecuted LBJ for carpet bombing civilians, JFK for the bay of pigs, FDR for interning thousands and thousands of Japanese Americans not to mention going against Congress and arming the allies, Truman dropping two atom bombs in the heart of major Japanese cities, any president that was involved the genocide of Native Americans and of course slavery and the Civil War. I know the defense is that now we are suppose to know better but remember that a majority of Americans supported ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’. If Obama and the Dems tried to prosecute Bush for war crimes I guarantee you the GOP would be trying to prosecute Obama right now for the same thing. So respectfully your implication that America has changed at least in this respect is wrong. IMHO most of those decisions were far worse. Americans simply give presidents great latitude in dealing with national security crisis. Personally I would love to see Bush, Cheney and GS all in orange jumpsuits. You can’t understate how hyper partisanship has blocked any chance to investigate even the causes of the financial crisis. Republicans will never be honest about the financial crisis and always blame it on F&F and Frank and Dodd. Politics where much less partisan during the Nixon investigation which would never happen in this political environment. I wish I could see ‘The Thick of It’ that was made by the creators of the hilarious movie ‘In the Loop’ but I can’t find it anywhere. About the only two American Sitcoms we watch now are The Big Bang Theory and Community. Oh and of course on cable Portlandia. Bored to Death was brilliant too but they friggin’ canceled it because I guess Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson got bigger gigs. Father Ted was one of our favorites and here are a few great clips.
