I don’t think there is anything you can say to a troll or a teabagger to win them over, but they are a minority of the right. A lot of middle right and moderate folk will listen a lot more when we stop lumping them all together and acting like they all eat babies. Few of us aren’t guilty of it. We start out saying “the Republicans” and go from there. If you are a Republican, you immediately become defensive. I don’t believe in PC. It’s a misnomer at best. Common decency is what everyone deserves. The key phrase in there is about nuances. From my youth I remember the somber and powerful voice of the President, always starting “My fellow Americans” (LBJ). Whether you agreed or disagreed with him, you listened, because his voice and words carried authority. Many of us listened, and then protested like hell, I will say. In researching this, I found the website American Rhetoric (http://www.americanrhetoric.com/) which has many fine academic and not so academic sources about words, including a listing of the 100 most influential speeches in America in the 20th century, including the text and for many of them the original audio. So many of the progressive stances are to be found in the speeches listed. No one thought about when the bill would come do, just so long as it wasn’t today. Between that, and the worst initiative in California history, Proposition 13, a pattern was set for financial ruin. Voters aren’t always very bright about what is good or not good for them, in both directions. There are those who would want a new Constitutional Convention, which is called out as a Constitutional process. I personally think we were lucky to have come up with the finest governing base document in the history of humankind, and that any attempt to wholesale update or replace it would only result in the special interests ruining it. However, I would like to see some Amendments. Voting on civil rights is difficult, but it has worked on the national stage before. Not always quickly or well, but it has worked. How else can we get the changes needed? But true updates and change requires establishing a strong motivated base and pushing an agenda. Sufferage wasn’t won by women alone voting it in, but by getting enough of an enlightened electorate to understand the basic justice of it. The same goes for most other civil rights. Unfortunately, here in America the superstitious get in the road (read that religious right). But the concepts of rights evolve as we do. At that age the concept of it was difficult to grasp until I got home and remember watching Walter Conkrite talk about it. I do remember that we didn’t have teachers talk to us about things like that back then. And the loses of MLK and RFK. But my real awakening was the VietNam war and the protests. It took me 30 years to be able to view footage of the 1968 Chicago convention again. And the pain is still deep. We have lost a lot of dreams, but the good thing about dreams is that man has the infinite capacity to dream, and then to take those dreams to fruition. And most people’s polling places are not that far from where they live and in an off year election are not usually busy.
