Xmas Music Thread – Holiday Music

Well my good friends, I just found out that Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel is starting a Sherlock Holmes marathon, with Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone!! I love those movies so much. I’ll see you in 24 hours…and to all a good night!

Luciano Pavarotti – Ave Maria

Even an old Ray Charles is great. This is from 2003 with a gospel choir.

Not exactly Christmas, but O Happy Day, by a gospel choir, rocks! They really get down to it about half way through! Dayem!

Always makes me feel good too, Kalima.

But here;s the one that makes me tear up a bit:

“Religion is for people who are afraid of hell; spirituality is for people who’ve been there.”

I can’t remember who said that, but it is how I feel about it.

Nat King Cole:

KQuark, that’s what I’m talking about!

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 25, 2009 @ 2:56 pm

Oh, Nellie– I had completely forgotten that! Thank you so much!! It is so fantastic, makes me cry. Yes— without any fear.

Not Even on Christmas…

Oh, they don’t have to go nearly that far for me to cut them out of my life. I have no use for any Reptilian. Anymore than I would allow any sociopath into my life.

Keven, you and I are cut from the same (zero-tolerance-toward Christofacist) cloth!

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 25, 2009 @ 12:13 pm

Scher, I really admire you. I am not as patient as you at all, and probably not as family oriented either. There is only one person mildly like that among my in-laws, and we never discuss politics. If there were people like that in my life– other than very peripherally– well, they wouldn’t be in my life. And thank god, you were able to debunk that crap!

Jingle Planet

Wow– that was stunning, Khirad. And I learned about Krampus! all your images are just first-rate too– especially the Krampus ones, but I’m pretty weird myself. And I loved the “Three Kings” rendition!

It was all wonderful– carry on!!

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 25, 2009 @ 12:27 pm

LOL!!! Great, Tiger!

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 25, 2009 @ 12:16 pm

Nellie– you astound me! I could never do anything that clever– just hilarious and so true! Bravo!

Morning Edition and Crumpet the Elf

I first heard Sedaris on “This American Life” and have loved him ever since then. He’s a gem! Thanks for putting this up– he’s hilarious!

A Loving Heart

Thank you, TRP, for that beautiful poem!!!!! As long as you write, you will thrive, I just know it. And I think we can post poems in either the Speakers’ Corner or in the Arts section, maybe. I for one, would welcome them.

TRP– Write!

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 26, 2009 @ 12:50 pm

Peacekitten– for some reason, I hadn’t read this earlier, and I must tell you how moved I am at your courage! I hope you see it as courage, because to me, courage means a brave heart. Not being unafraid– that doesn’t take courage– but asking for help, for taking off into the unknown. I don’t feel at all sorry for you, I envy you! You inspire me.

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 26, 2009 @ 12:39 pm

That was just perfect, Kes. I have nothing more to say–just perfect, for me anyway. Thank you.

Dear TRP, one moment, one second at a time. That’s all we have. There have been days when I have sat at my kitchen table, terrified of what would happen. The past is gone, the future is not here, and there is only this moment. I told myself–right this second, I am safe. And then in this second I am safe. And in this second. And again. I would eat, and it was my last meal. I sat there and told myself, this moment is OK– nothing bad has happened. And then another. And the day was safe. The panic and despair faded in those moments.

And there were other days, when it felt as though I knew the future held only disgrace and I didn’t see the point. But I had a point, and his name is Josh, my son. You have too have a point–your girls.

Merry Christmas, peacekitten! That was one beautiful piece of writing. It should be required reading for anyone who needs to be reminded of why we all are here. (And I mean, on Earth!)

TRP, The holidays are the hardest, I know. We are in the darkest period of the year– you, the darkest period of your life. My heart goes out to you, as does anyone’s who has ever been in such a time. Having been there myself, I know that there are no words of cheer, nothing one can say that will give you the courage you may need to believe that the light at the end of the tunnel is not an oncoming train. (It’s NOT!)

The last time I was in a place like yours, I had a very dear friend who used to come over to my house with books of poetry. She did nothing more than sit with me as we read together. We thumbed through the books, randomly picking poems we liked.

Since I can’t be there with you, here’s one of my favorites, by Billy Collins:

Litany

You are the bread and the knife,
The crystal
goblet and the wine…
-Jacques Crickillon

You are the bread and the knife,
the crystal goblet and the wine.
You are the dew on the morning grass
and the burning wheel of the sun.
You are the white apron of the baker,
and the marsh birds suddenly in flight.

However, you are not the wind in the orchard,
the plums on the counter,
or the house of cards.
And you are certainly not the pine-scented air.
There is just no way that you are the pine-scented air.

It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge,
maybe even the pigeon on the general’s head,
but you are not even close
to being the field of cornflowers at dusk.

And a quick look in the mirror will show
that you are neither the boots in the corner
nor the boat asleep in its boathouse.

It might interest you to know,
speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world,
that I am the sound of rain on the roof.

I also happen to be the shooting star,
the evening paper blowing down an alley
and the basket of chestnuts on the kitchen table.

I am also the moon in the trees
and the blind woman’s tea cup.
But don’t worry, I’m not the bread and the knife.
You are still the bread and the knife.
You will always be the bread and the knife,
not to mention the crystal goblet and–somehow–the wine.

Anonymous submission.

Twas The Night Before Christmas – A Parody

Well, she’s crazy. But about being angry at your Church–I was taught that there is no real faith without anger and doubt. In fact, it is often the sign of a true mystic. “The dark night of the soul.”

That may not be you, Kalima, but I offer it for what it’s worth. Have you ever seem Julia Sweeney’s one woman show? Excerpts are on YouTube and she is phenomenal! It’s about her spiritual journey from Catholicism to atheism and it covers her whole adult life. And as an atheist, she’s every bit as “spiritual.”

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 25, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

That was awesome! And I laughed out loud at this:

So up to the House-top the Baggers they flew,
With signs full of hate, and heads up their ass too.

Now that was some fancy iambic pentameter!

The Senate Passes Healthcare Reform Bill 60-39

Merry Christmas KK! As you see from my post below, I am not celebrating this bill, but I am still more glad that it passed (for a variety of reasons) than I am pissed off. I am about 5 degrees happier on the fence-o-meter, if you know what I mean.

But here’s what I’ve been thinking about: I think before this stupid country changes, something terrible has to happen– like insurance rates literally impoverishing most folks. Maybe that’s what it’ll take– higher rates, more bankruptcies. And the rates WILL GO UP! The ins.cos are not going to cut their profits. Lawrence O’Donnell said the same thing on Morning Joke.

» Posted By Chernynkaya On December 24, 2009 @ 3:31 pm

Hi KQ– and thank you for posting under what must be difficult conditions for you. I hope you are regaining your strength and are on the mend.

I am glad the bill passed. It is very modest progress, which is hard to argue against. Many people desperate for help will get it. But I am not celebrating– I am just not mourning. That’s the bottom line for me.

I am no longer demoralized because this bill DOES help, and the Congress and the President accomplished something against tremendous odds, tremendous amounts of money spent to prevent anything like reform, and tremendous right-wing noise.

But I do not feel celebratory knowing that this country is so backward, so bribed and that so few are willing to do what is best for us.

It’s not a lump of coal in my Christmas stocking, but it’s not an empty stocking either.
