@Sue, do you remember that cologne that smelled like you dipped yourself in Lemons? What was is called?

My mother wouldn’t let us go to a “Happening”, the closest one was at Macy’s Herald Square…she was such a downer at times!

But she was a great dressmaker, she used to copy the mini dresses shown in Vogue Magazine, make her own patterns..we were always a head of the girls in school! 😎

Yes, Twiggy was my role model, sad to say, if I recall she was the “Yardley” spokeswomen…remember my sister and I doing our eyes up like hers and begging my mother to let me get a “pixie” cut.

I wore my white “go-go” boots with every outfit and my sister ironing her hair to straighten it… 😆

In the pink Author decries ‘Princess culture’ for creating ‘retrograde role models’

Is pink is the new black?

Author Peggy Orenstein, author of “Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches From the Frontlines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture,” sees pink as more than an innocuous staple in little girls’ wardrobes, but as a symbol of a pervasive marketing ploy targeting young girls and resulting in dire consequences.

What she calls the “princess culture” has resulted, she says, in an objectification of females based on appearance, and consequently plays a large part in unprecedented self-esteem issues, eating disorders and making poor choices in the quest to be “desirable.”

While the book’s title is tongue-in-cheek, Orenstein stresses the seriousness of the current culture of girls by saying, “There is a lot at stake here.”

@deygirl – Not for nothing, but this post is pretty damn GOOD!

I too, have felt self conscious at times posting here, surrounded by all these wonderful writers, some of them professional, so don’t think you are alone it that. Why would they want to hear my drivel, it is definitely easier over at HP, where you can hit and run.

I don’t know if it’s the wisdom of growing older, self acceptance, hormonal surges or all three, I have come to a point in my life that as Rhett Butler would say:

“Scarlett, I really don’t give a damn.”

Here they know I’m not a writer, but they accept me just the same, that’s what I like about this place and keep coming back…

On a Cloudy Day

Mr. Brodie, so glad to see you here, great writing, chilling story…As a white women I have never experienced “DWB”, but I have heard a very similar story from one of my clients.

A black man in his early 60’s, who has owned a successful Auto/Marine Upholstery business for close to 30 yrs….his only crime was a broken rear tail light and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, leaving a very exclusive “all white” yacht club in a very exclusive “all white” town.

After my client told me his story, he laughed and said, if this had happened in the town we all live in, he probably would have been stopped by one of the cops who are in the Marine division part-time during the summer. Told his light was out, then asked, “Can you come over and look at my boat, I need a new cover, what kinda of deal can you give me?”

So, here in my neck of the woods, it all depends on which town you are stopped in…it should be this way in this day and age, but it is.

@boomer-that’s the one thing about cats that dog would do…take car of themselves. Just had a harrowing walk at the park, it was either a sheet of ice or mush that you fell into up to your knees. We are both exhausted.. 😐

From a union worker family standpoint…

@boomer – in your second link “GOP proposals…” there was this:

“It’s a big issue when you look at how much of that budget is controlled by the contract. Unions have always taken the viewpoint that they are not going to give anything unless they get something. Schools these days can’t give them very much at all.”

Same exact statement this morning in our newspaper, will go and find it, must be the GOP meme for Teacher’s Unions.

*Edit* – not the same, but pretty damn close:

“I completely have every bit of respect for our teachers,” he said. “But the conversation is heating up because (the unions) don’t want to give anything unless they get something in return. That irritates me. The only thing we have to give them back is, they get to keep their jobs.”

@2belinda – great post, I remember it well, live in So. Western, CT, the following year the teachers here in my town went on strike, lasted 6 weeks. They finally got close to what they needed, they asked for the moon, got the stars instead. Since then the Teachers Union has been the boogey man for all the ills in the school system…my mother was a teacher, boy did she tell some stories.

@FustratedPA, so true your statement of, “Don’t hate what I have, fight for what I have FOR YOURSELF”.

I just don’t get this about people, cowing before the mighty Corporations, they could give a shit about anybody or any of their workers. I know, I worked in Corporate for 16 yrs, before leaving and starting my own businesses.

This last demonetization from the right has just about put me over the edge today, first it’s the welfare Queen, then the Liberals, the Progressives, President Obama, the unemployed…now the Unions.

When are people going to wake up to these myths? We have no help from the MSM, they just seem to perpetuate it all.

@David, that’s the problem, the right as created these myths about the democrats and liberals through the years, starting with Reagan’s “Welfare Queen”, and they have stuck in the minds of people and I don’t know how we are going to change it.

This past weekend a citizen of my town posted an op-ed on these myths, it was very good, the rightwing rag of a paper actually published it. He stated that they right portrays many of us as the ’60 radicals type, with long hair and peace signs hanging around our necks, wearing Berkinstock sandels and singing love songs. That were are for a welfare nation, that we were all socialist and drive Subaru’s…we are not.

This “Liberal” paid her own way through school, drives a big gas sucking SUV, lives in a house worth $750K, owns a boat, owns two businesses and shops at Talbot’s, gives to charities, albeit not a church, volunteers to clean up the city and it’s waterways every year, plus pays her taxes without bitching about it!

What the fuck more do they want me to do?

And if it makes more sense that the fucking 3-headed honey-toad on the Colorado River advance our society for some reason, it is a heck of a lot better that we put our taxpayer dollars to that than to build another fucking aircraft or bomb!

(please forgive my outburst, I’m just tired of all these generalizations about the “so-called Liberal”)

It’s critical to look at boards of directors – interlocking directorates (someone on the board of one company who is from a competitor company) are technically illegal, but hardly anyone enforces it anymore. It’s incredibly illuminating to see who’s calling the shots.

That’s one of the problems, no one is enforcing these things anymore, because those who should be are in bed with them too.

This is so disheartening at times, I give you a lot of credit doing this.

Everything that you have posted today would just fly over the average Americans head…we truly have become a Oligarchy, and what scares me is, not many people really care.

Here in my town they are going after the Teachers and saying that it’s because of the Union and they’re demands that are bankrupting us.

The average starting salary for a Teacher in CT is $39K, my town is $32K, average overall salary is $59K, with a Masters, my town $51K. We are ranked 22nd in the Nation for teacher’s salaries.

The Teachers contribute 7.8% to their own pension, since 2006, the town contributes nothing. Their contribution to health benefits is up to 30%, town pays 70%. Budgets for supplies for teachers is down to next to nothing, most pay for their own supplies.

Meanwhile the new Superintendent of Schools is making $185,000, Assistant Superintendent $130,000…Superintendent’s Secretary is now at $85,000.

What’s wrong with this picture?

But yet, the Republicans who run this hedge fund town want everyone to believe that it’s the Union that’s the problem….Union bad, Republican Superintendent of Schools crony good.

(Now mind you, my town is in one of the most expensive counties in the US, Fairfield County…I have no idea how these teachers survive here with those salary numbers)
