One reason is all the testing – they spend so much time teaching fir tests and the other is discipline. Women have always had to control their classrooms without the threat of violence because we simply were smaller than our students in secondary school – although we could send them to the principal. I found inconvenienced that was the best punishment – like making a student stay after school. However, today there are different behavior problems that we really don’t understand – so many kids with ADD – is from parents drug use? environmental factors? etc. I think until we understand or change the way we’re teaching many of these kids who are bright but can’t sit still or pay attention and disrupt the class we aren’t going to be very successful. Unfortunately. We’re ignoring our brightest and best because they are going to learn anyway. And here we are putting education at the bottom of our priorities. When she taught you had to be a spinster (what an old fashioned word) so in order for her to keep teaching with two daughters she had to prove that she had full time help at home. The most she ever made was $3000 and she retired in the 50’s. I signed my first contract in 1983 for less than $13K and my children qualified for free lunch. Unions were just becoming a thing of power for schools across the nation. Unions aren’t perfect but they have helped women get better compensation and benefits for many working mothers. When I hear about unproductive tenured teachers I just want to point out that that is not the unions fault. It is the fault of the incompetent administrations out there. It’s always about paying for what we value and we don’t value education. 30 years ago when I signed my first teaching contract under $13K my children would have qualified for free lunch had I not been married. That at a time when masters were required to teach – ridiculous. I have my doubts about tenure however. All teachers and workers should be responsible for doing their job every year. The parents were so nervous leaving her the first time that they called about 20 minutes later and she had already claimed her spot on my bed – she made herself at home at once. I have arthritis and really can’t walk a dog but I was amazed at how lazy and mellow these dogs are and how small they seem in the house – they are very delicate. I thought long and hard (going to many rescue shows) about adopting one but I’m allergic to dogs that shed and came to my senses – but I will always have a special fondness for them. largest problem? No one taught them what was appropriate language, attire and work ethic on the job. I soon learned I had to teach and prepare good employees. Once I figured that out I had some wonderful young people work for me. Example of poor employee: at this point I had returned to hometown to care for my mother and was working at the local hospital. Young religious girl posted a petition against gays on work website. No one else said a thing and I forwarded it to two superiors and said I was going to send it to hospital administrator. She was talked to, totally clueless what she had done wrong and written up. I would have fired her. Honestly, people must be taught very specifically that you can’t use your computer for personal reasons, etc.
There’s no reply to answer you so I’m replying to myself. No I don’t think the government is trying to kill us – some of it is ignorance. It’s like saying butter and eggs were bad for you and then finding that margarine was much worse. Many people believed margarine had less calories. I just think they have put money into processed foods and corn subsidies not knowing how bad they are for us and they the have been influenced by the large corporatiions. The medical field has little knowledge of nutrition and really has been slow to be concerned when you think of the great strides we’ve made in medicine. I’d have to do some research but I’m on my phone – I’ve done some before. I’ll try to get back to you.
